Police not happy again at the rugby

Police say they are having a busy night in Cardiff after Wales beat South Africa

Saturday 2nd December 2017

It follows the final autumn international

A senior police officer who called for drunken rugby fans to get banning orders has reported a fresh series of crimes in the wake of Wales' win over South Africa, with increasing incidents.

Just after 8pm on Saturday evening Chief Inspector Mark Cleland, of British Transport Police, tweeted officers had already responded to: sexual assault, assault, four alcohol-related injuries, drug use and verbal abuse.

"The night is young," he added.

Just minutes later he also tweeted they had arrested one person for public disorder and that they were responding to a fight "on the station front".

It comes after the perceived drinking culture among Welsh rugby fans came under the spotlight after drink-fuelled abuse , including towards a disabled man, was reported both inside the Principality Stadium and on the streets outside following Wales' clash with New Zealand.

Empty beer glasses on the streets of Cardiff on Saturday

After that match, Chief Insp Cleland tweeted his hopes for a change in the law that would see badly behaved rugby fans subject to the same restrictions as football hooligans.

He tweeted: "Always a disappointment to review the post-incident crime and see that yet again rugby fans were worse than football fans in Cardiff this weekend with their post-Wales v New Zealand drunken violent behaviour."

Blaming drunken crowds drawn into the city centre by rugby, he said that following the All Blacks game there had been two arrests, six violent crimes and more than 20 incidents of escalating disorder prevented by early police intervention.

Ahead of Saturday's match the Wales team sent a strong message to drunken fans who cause trouble at the Principality Stadium saying "Don’t bother coming at all."

This is a huge story and massive issue that needs to be addressed!!! Issue banning orders and stop serving drink to these minority sport morons within a 3 mile radius of the egg stadium. Embarrassing to our great nation.

What happened to the clown at the blues game who threw a pint at an opposition player.

Like everything with the egg, brushed under the carpet.

Well done to the inspector who raised this again.

Just a few years ago the taffia media would not have responded.

Good that's it now being reported on, always been the same going back to when i was growing up in the 70's

What I found surprising at the egg game yesterday, was that people were allowed to take their unfinished drinks out of the stadium at the end. Most venues, you have to finish your drinks in that area to comply with licensing laws.

The issue here for me is he hasn't directly linked it to the rugby or given details on each incident he's referring to all of which can happen on a normal Saturday night in Cardiff City centre.

Rugby - you sit with opposition fans during the game - you are welcomed into the away clubhouse after the game for a few pints - have never seen any trouble at a Rugby match at any level and I have been to a few.

Football - you meet at the railway station - you split up into groups so the police do not suspect your motives - you meet with away fans by prior arrangement and you beat shit out of each other - then you chastise each other on the forum for "grassing".

Is this for real

That is one of the most uninformed, inaccurate posts I have seen on here for a while

There are huge numbers of rugby fans who go to the internationals just to get pissed up. St Mary Street is simply dangerous for women and none too pleasant for us blokes with these numpties looking for trouble.

Your attitude is typical of the "brush it under the carpet" attitude that makes this appear acceptable. NEWS FLASH: IT AIN'T !!!!

Most rugby tourists are Neanderthals and it's good to see the police speaking out at last. Their behaviour is a total disgrace and it's time for it to stop.
