SUBDUED DRAW: BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO DIFFERENT

Mon Dec 04, 2017 9:29 pm

A frustrating FA Cup third round draw saw Cardiff City miss out on the 'glamour ties' many in the Welsh capital were hoping for.

It also saw a recent trend continue — of the Bluebirds drawing similar or inferior sides at home in the world famous cup competition.

In recent years Cardiff have faced Fulham, Shrewsbury Town and Colchester United in the third round.

And it wasn't much different this year as they were pitted against League Two play-off hopefuls Mansfield Town.

It could, however, have been so much different.

BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey revealed the draw rehearsal actually saw Cardiff drawn against seven-times cup winners Chelsea in a much more glamorous tie.

He tweeted out the result of the rehearsal, which also saw Manchester rivals United and City thrown together, with Swansea City against Norwich.

A trip to Stamford Bridge would have been hugely anticipated by the Bluebirds followers, most of whom have voiced their desire for a run in the FA Cup to go alongside their promotion charge under Neil Warnock.

Cardiff have rich history in the cup. They were runners-up to Portsmouth in the 2008 FA Cup final and lifted the trophy back in 1927, yet haven't gone past the fifth round since. They've been knocked out in the third round both times in the past two years.

A clash against Mansfield represents a good chance to progress to the fourth round if not the pizazz of a meeting with Antonio Conte's Chelsea.

A love the FA Cup but it is a good opportunity to give squad players or those returning from injury game time. Zohore, Richards, Healy, Halford, Connelly, Camp and Harris could all get valuable game time against Mansfield.

Obviously we run the risk of losing (e.g. Shrewsbury) but looking at the bigger picture it is an invaluable chance for those players.

Totally agree even our second string should get us past Mansfield or at least get our fringe players valuable game time, then onto round four and a big tie home or away please
