COULD CARDIFF'S MISS BE TO WOLVES BENEFIT?

Could Wolves pull clear by signing Wout Weghorst, Cardiff City's one-that-got-away?

Cardiff City so nearly signed Wout Weghorst in January 2016, but he should be on Wolves' sights as they eye the Eredivisie.


With Wolves shopping for a new striker in January, it seems Championship leaders want to have a glance at the Eredivisie’s bargain basement.

According to The Mirror, Feyenoord talisman Nicolai Jorgensen (above) is on their radar and his statistics from last season explain why. The Dane scored 21 goals and assisted another 11 to inspire the Rotterdammers to their first Eredivisie title since 1999.

But Jorgensen is not the only affordable and astute striker signing Wolves could make from the Dutch top tier. AZ Alkmaar frontman Wout Weghorst has seven goals in 13 starts this season – two more than Jorgensen.

In fact, only red-hot PSV duo Jurgen Locadia and Hirving Lozano have outscored Weghorst so far this season. A genuine Golden Boot contender, the aggressive and intelligent poacher would surely come a little cheaper than Jorgensen too, whose status as a title winner and an international number nine surely add a few points to his price-tag.

But while Weghorst is hardly a household name in England, he will be remembered without great fondness by Cardiff City supporters.

According to Wales Online, Cardiff were close to signing the then-Heracles forward in January 2016, the Eredivisie club’s chairman Jan Smit claiming that a fee had been agreed.

Weghorst was all set to move to South Wales but the terms of the deal suddenly changed and Cardiff backed out. This was to the frustration of former manager Russel Slade, who the 6ft 5ins striker claimed was a big admirer of his talents.

But with Cardiff now Wolves’ closest challengers at the top of the table, sitting four points behind in second, the Black Country pacesetters could pull clear by turning their attention to a player who so nearly joined the Bluebirds.
