Leeds hijack Forshaw deal and beat Cardiff City to Sign him.

18/01/18

First up on the agenda is a bit of news on Middlesbrough Adam Forshaw - and it doesn’t make for good reading if you’re a Bluebirds fan.

It looks like Leeds have hijacked a bid by Cardiff and secured the services of the midfielder at the 11th hour, with Forshaw set to have a medical in Yorkshire today.

Neil Warnock had been keen on Forshaw despite signing Marko Grujic yesterday afternoon but Forshaw seems to favour a move to Elland Road.

Transfer latest - Leeds United fight Cardiff for Boro midfielder Forshaw Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Forshaw, who Leeds United are fighting to sign.

Yorkshire Post

Leeds United are battling with Cardiff City for the signature of Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Forshaw.

Leeds want to strengthen their options in central midfield by bringing the 26-year-old to Elland Road but the club face strong competition from Cardiff manager Neil Warnock who is pushing to finalise a deal.

Cardiff have already indicated their willingness to meet Boro’s £2.5m valuation of Forshaw but Leeds are ready to match City’s offer and believe Forshaw favours a switch to West Yorkshire over a move to Wales.

United expressed their interest in Forshaw after losing Eunan O’Kane to a three-match ban following the Republic of Ireland international’s red card at Ipswich Town last weekend. O’Kane’s suspension has weakened Thomas Christiansen’s hand at a time when Ronaldo Vieira is already managing a knee injury and Kalvin Phillips is one yellow card away from a two-match ban. Forshaw, a former Everton trainee, is surplus to requirements at The Riverside and last played for Boro in a 2-0 win over Ipswich on December 9.

He has made over 100 appearances for the club since a move from Wigan Athletic three years ago and featured during their Championship promotion season in 2015-16. His contract with Boro runs to 2020. Cardiff are equally keen to bring Forshaw on board having put themselves in contention for automatic promotion to the Premier League during the first half of the term.

Warnock was aiming to open talks with the midfielder in the next 24 hours. Leeds, however, are working to beat Cardiff to for his signature and Forshaw’s arrival would clear a path for Mateusz Klich to move out of Elland Road on loan. Klich had been peripheral since joining United from FC Twente in a £1.5m deal last summer and the Poland international is attracting interest from abroad.

Middlesbrough transfers: Leeds increasingly confident of beating Cardiff City to the signing of Adam Forshaw -

Middlesborough Gazette Live

Wednesday 17th Jan 2018

Leeds are going head-to-head with Cardiff City in the battle to sign Adam Forshaw this month, with United chiefs growing increasingly confident that the midfielder will end up at Elland Road.

Cardiff are already said to have indicated a willingness to meet Boro's £2.5m valuation for the 26-year-old Scouser, but Leeds will match that offer.

And bosses at the West Yorkshire club believe Forshaw would prefer to head for Leeds than Wales this month.

Leeds were linked with Adam Clayton earlier this week but, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post , it's Forshaw who is the top midfield target, with United expressing an interest in the former Brentford and Wigan man after Eunan O'Kane was sent off at Ipswich at the weekend and will now serve a three-match ban.

Boro are understood to be open to offers for Forshaw, who is yet to play a single minute of action since Tony Pulis took charge. The likeable midfielder wasn't included in the squad for the game against Fulham at the weekend and didn't feature in the Under-23 side packed with senior players for Sunday's game against Blackburn.

Pulis has five senior central midfielders on his books and is keen to offload one or two as he looks to trim numbers in his squad.

Forshaw has been on Neil Warnock's radar since the January window opened but the Bluebirds now look set to beat Boro to the signing of Liverpool's Marko Grujic.

According to well-placed sources in Wales, Warnock wanted battle-hardened midfielders with experience of winning promotion from the Championship, boxes which Grujic doesn't tick. But he does fit the bill in terms of the style of player Warnock is looking for: tall, strong and box-to-box.

Whether Warnock remains keen to add Forshaw if he manages to get the Grujic deal over the line remains to be seen, however the Yorkshire Evening Post claim the experienced boss was hoping to open talks with the Boro man in the next 24 hours.

In any case, Leeds believe they're now in pole position to sign the ex-Everton youngster, who has made more than 100 appearances on Teesside since signing for the club three years ago.

Despite establishing himself as a fan favourite and impressing in the early stages of the Premier League campaign, Forshaw has endured a frustrating season so far and fallen out of favour. His last start came in the defeat to Bristol City at the beginning of December.

Potentially we have a better deal. New lad has good reports. Serbian international and someone Liverpool saw fit to pay over 5 million for. Is also loan. So we won’t be stuck with him if it doesn’t work out. If it does he helps us up to the prem where would be looking to strengthen anyway.

Would forshaw be someone to base a mid field around if we are promoted?? Or is it better to save the cash for use elsewhere?

If we look after this player there's potential for us to build on a good relationship with Liverpool for future players to?
