When is the UEFA Nations League draw and who can Wales play?

Wales are set to discover their UEFA Nations League fate this week.

But who exactly can Ryan Giggs' side face in the new competition and when will the games take place?

Here's everything you need to know...

When is the UEFA Nations League draw?

The draw for the newly-formed competition takes place at the SwissTech Convention Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland on Wednesday, January 24.

It is scheduled to get underway at 11am (12pm local time).

Wales will now turn their attentions to qualifying for Euro 2020

What are the groups?

League A

Pot 1 : Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Spain
Pot 2 : France, England, Switzerland, Italy
Pot 3 : Poland, Iceland, Croatia, Netherlands

League B

Pot 1 : Austria, Wales , Russia, Slovakia
Pot 2 : Sweden, Ukraine, Republic of Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Pot 3 : Northern Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Turkey

League C

Pot 1 : Hungary, Romania, Scotland, Slovenia
Pot 2 : Greece, Serbia, Albania, Norway
Pot 3 : Montenegro, Israel, Bulgaria, Finland
Pot 4 : Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania

League D

Pot 1 : Azerbaijan, FYR Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia
Pot 2 : Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg
Pot 3 : Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta
Pot 4 : Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino, Gibraltar

So who could Wales play?

Wales will face one of Sweden, Ukraine, Republic of Ireland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

They will also come up against either Northern Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic and Turkey.

How will the draw work?

The draw starts with League D and Pot 4, which contains four balls, with teams assigned to groups in ascending order from D1 to D4.

The draw continues with Pot 3, then Pot 2 and Pot 1.

The draws for the other Leagues follow a similar procedure, though Group C1 will not contain a team from Pot 4, while Leagues B and A will be made up of three-team groups.

How do the leagues work?

Teams play every other opponent twice (one home fixture and one away), and the nation that finishes at the top of each table will gain promotion into the league above them while those who finish at the bottom will drop into the league below them.

So if Wales - who are in League B - finish at the top of the table after their four fixtures, they will be promoted into League A. But if they finish bottom, they will be relegated to League C.

Given that Wales will only have two opponents, they will play on only four of the allocated six matchdays.

The top four-ranked League B teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter play-offs in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

When will the games take place?

Matchday 1: 6–8 September 2018
Matchday 2: 9–11 September 2018
Matchday 3: 11–13 October 2018
Matchday 4: 14–16 October 2018
Matchday 5: 15–17 November 2018
Matchday 6: 18–20 November 2018
Finals draw: early December 2018
Finals: 5–9 June 2019

(Exact fixture dates will be confirmed in the coming days after the draw)

When are the play-off draws?

UEFA EURO 2020 play-off draw: 22 November 2019 UEFA EURO 2020 play-offs: 26–31 March 2020

Come On WALES!!!!

I have a question, is it possible for Wales to be in the same group as England, just like in the Euro 2016 group?

Not in this draw, they will only be drawn against teams in league B and those in pot 2 and three, as shown in OP post

no mate...there are 4 leagues...if you take another look ,we are in league B....and are seeded in pot 1. the draw will see us play 1 team from pot 2 and 1 team from pot 3 who we play home and away...the winners of that mini lge of 3 countries progress to a semi final.

More pointless football. These qualifiers are going to be played during the football season, cocking up league games which are much more important to the fans. :banghead:

They are al being played in dates previously reserved for friendlies! The idea is to have competition games rather than friendlies, think idea around this is teams are getting wise that if play friendly you go down world rankings when lose hence why Wales didn't play some games when others did! The carrot for new competition is qualification to euro 2020.

Yes it basically gives countries 2 chances to qualify for euro 2020! main euro draw as normal, and through this competition :old:

its actually a little bit better than that....should we not win our mini group and qualify for the play offs in league b...we could be called up { as the 2nd highest ranked team } to take part in the league A play offs as id imagine most of league A will qualify through their normal qualifying groups.
