About Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers Football Club is a professional association football club based in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The club currently competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

The club was formed as Christ Church Football Club in 1874, and adopted its current name in 1877. Founder members of the Football League in 1888, Bolton have spent the highest number of seasons of any club in the top flight without winning the title (the 2011–12 season was their 73rd, non-consecutive, year in the top flight). The closest they have come to the title is third in the First Division on three occasions (1891–92, 1920–21 and 1924–25). As of 2015, the club has spent more seasons in the top division than any other club outside the current Premier League.

Bolton were a successful cup side in the 1920s, winning the FA Cup three times. The club won the cup a fourth time in 1958. A leaner spell followed, reaching a nadir in 1987 when the club spent a season in the Fourth Division. The club regained top-flight status in 1995 after a 15-year absence. In a period of relative success, the club qualified for the UEFA Cup twice, reaching the last 32 in 2005–06 and the last 16 in 2007–08.

The club played at Burnden Park for 102 years from 1895. On 9 March 1946, The Burnden Park disaster occurred, which was a human crush in which 33 Bolton fans lost their lives. In 1997 it moved out of town to the Reebok Stadium, named after long-term club sponsor Reebok. The stadium was renamed the Macron Stadium in July 2014, to reflect the club's new deal with Italian sportswear company Macron.

Previous Meeting

We lost 2-0 at Bolton back in December. Josh Vela and Gary Madine, now at Cardiff City, got the goals.

Neil Warnock was left frustrated after Sol Bamba's late strike at The Den was ruled out after referee Keith Stroud brought play back for an earlier foul on left-back Joe Bennett, meaning the Bluebirds had to settle for a point against Neil Harris's side.

Cardiff remain right in the mix for a play-off spot though, and they'll be able to close the gap to second-placed Aston Villa to just one point if they can secure victory against Phil Parkinson's side in the Welsh capital tomorrow night.

The match will also pit Gary Madine against his former employers who he left in the final hours of the January transfer window.

Bolton manager Phil Parkinson on Cardiff clash

Bolton secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Fulham at the weekend courtesy of a goal from former Bluebird Adam Le Fondre.

And here’s what Bolton boss Phil Parkinson has had to say ahead of the Trotters’ clash with the Bluebirds.

PHIL PARKINSON:

"Tuesday against Cardiff is our game in hand and what a chance we have to go there and get above Reading, another team we’ve been targeting for a while.
It will be fantastic if we can go and get a result down there and we’ll be giving our all to do just that.”

"We beat Cardiff City at home not too long ago. We know what they are about. Neil has done a fantastic job. We know what we have to do and are looking forward to it."

"We're mentally and physically ready for Cardiff."

"We’ve had a number of weeks without midweek games so we’ve made sure we’re prepared for this run of fixtures."

"Le Fondre's goal was fantastic and his all-round play on Saturday was very good. He’s pushing for a starting place and we’ll make a decision tomorrow when we get down to Cardiff and train."

I believe we are half way back to what we were doing at the start of the season.

We played Bolton and Fulham at the time we were ravaged with injuries. Bolton did us a favour last Saturday by drawing with Fulham the side that took us to the cleaners. This game tomorrow night will tell us how much we are on our way back.

Cardiff v Bolton Sky preview

13/02/18

Gary Madine could play against his old club

Cardiff striker Gary Madine hopes to be passed fit to take on former club Bolton.

Madine - who left Bolton on transfer deadline day last month - was in the wars during Cardiff's 1-1 draw at Millwall last Friday, with Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock saying his new signing had his nose "smashed".

Lee Peltier was on the bench at The Den after five weeks out following minor surgery and is a possible defensive option for Warnock. Loan signing Yanic Wildschut could also rejoin the matchday squad after missing out at Millwall.

VOTE: EFL Goals of the Month

WATCH & VOTE for your EFL Goals of the Month for January in the Championship, League One and League Two here...

Adam Le Fondre will hope his wonder strike against Fulham can earn him a starting berth in Bolton's XI. The ex-Cardiff striker came off the bench to score in his first appearance in over a month, with Le Fondre now in contention for a first league start of 2018.

Manager Phil Parkinson has reported no fresh injury issues from the weekend for the trip, yet Craig Noone, another former Bluebirds player, missed Saturday's draw with Fulham due to a slight knee problem. Victory for Bolton in the Welsh capital would move them five points clear of the drop.

Opta stats

Cardiff haven't kept a league clean sheet against Bolton since January 1989, conceding in all nine matches since (W2 D1 L6).

Only one of the last 20 meetings between these teams in all competitions has ended as a draw.

The Bluebirds are unbeaten in four league games (W2 D2) since a run of four consecutive defeats.

Bolton have the worst away record in the Championship this season (P14 W1 D5 L8), collecting fewer points than any other side (8).

Neil Warnock has ended on the winning side in one of his last seven league meetings with Bolton (D3 L3) and has lost his last three meetings against Phil Parkinson in all competitions.

Only Burton (29) and Ipswich (36) have had fewer shots on target in away Championship games this season than Bolton (41).

Prutton's prediction

This is a great opportunity for Cardiff to get three points and remind Aston Villa and Derby that they're still well in the battle for automatic promotion.

Bolton have been in excellent form lately, however, and will be by no means a pushover on Tuesday night. It's their chance to show Gary Madine that they won't miss him between now and the end of the season, and I think this will be a draw.

David Prutton predicts: 1-1 (6/1 with Sky Bet)

Great ball

Callum Paterson mops up wonderfully in the middle of the park and dinks a great ball through the heart of the defence that Hoilett latches on to. He round the keeper but the angle his too tight and his low ball across the goal is cleared behind.

Joe Ralls whips in a corner, but it comes to nothing.
