Kyel Reid unable to inspire Coventry City's Under-23s who follow first team fortunes - Coventry Telegraph

Coventry City’s Under-23s winless run continued as they slipped to defeat at Cardiff City.

Ogo Obi and Kadeem Harris scored inside the first 28 minutes to secure a 2-0 victory for the Bluebirds at the Leckwith International Stadium – the Sky Blues third defeat out of their last four.

Development boss Jason Farndon fielded a fresh-faced side other than veteran striker Stuart Beavon and winger Kyel Reid in a team that included Brighton loan man Jordan Maguire-Drew.

Both Reid and Maguire-Drew are ineligible to play in Saturday’s first team trip to Brighton in the fifth round of the FA Cup so used the Under-23s fixture to get valuable match minutes in their legs.

Stuart Beavon got a run out for the Under-23s

The result leaves the Under-23s third from top of their professional development division, just a point off second placed Ipswich Town but nine away from leaders Crystal Palace, whom they thumped 6-1 at the Allard Way last month.

Sky Blues XI: Addai; Hickman, Green, Thompson, Camwell; Maycock, Finn, Maguire-Drew, Stedman, Reid; Beavon.

Subs: Bilson (GK), S Green, Endall, Johnson, L.Doyle.

Albion loan signing Maguire-Drew is unavailable to play this weekend due to the fact that the game is against his parent club and he’s not allowed to feature as part of the terms of the agreement to join the Sky Blues .

And left winger Reid is also unable to play on Saturday due to the fact that he is cup-tied, having turned out for Colchester United in the U’s early round exit at home to Oxford City while he was on loan at the Weston Homes Community Stadium during the first half of the season.

Although the 30-year-old hasn’t started a game since being back at the Ricoh Arena , he was one of City’s brightest players when he went on as a second half substitute against Accrington Stanley last weekend, sending several quality crosses into the box.

And Reid is one of the few players in the squad with experience at a time when 36-year-old captain Michael Doyle is battling to get over a knee injury.

Robins has not ruled out key man Doyle and first choice right-back Jack Grimmer being available for Saturday’s trip.

The Sky Blues manager says the pair are both making progress with their respective injuries and while he does not expect them to feature, he will give them every chance to declare themselves available for the tie in front of a near sell out crowd at the Amex Stadium.

Influential skipper and midfield warrior Doyle suffered medial knee ligament damage against MK Dons in the previous round of the competition, albeit playing in the next two league games, while first choice right-back Grimmer suffered a hamstring strain against Forest Green Rovers, forcing him to sit out the last two matches.

“They are getting closer but they are not going to be ready for the weekend, or at least I doubt they will,” said Robins, who is more confident about having the pair available for the trip to Mansfield a week on Saturday.

Brighton set to unleash record signing against Coventry City in the FA Cup

“In fairness, it’s one of those where I have to look at it. I want to try to get through the tie but it’s a balancing act this one because we have got to some big games coming up in the league.

“Look, if they’re fit and there’s any chance of getting them on the pitch, then they’ll be on the pitch. It’s as simple as that.

“If I have got any doubt, and I’ll get the opinion of the medical staff and I’ll speak to the players and see if they are anywhere near, and then take it from there.

“But it’s a balancing act that one, and the last thing we want to do is make it worse and have them out for any length of time because there has been a lot of work gone into this season.”

Asked if Saturday’s high profile cup tie brings added pressure to his young side, Robins said: “We’re trying to relieve the pressure from them because that’s something that can freak them.

“When you have got young players that’s something that can be, and has been, prevalent in the last three games.

“You know they can only do so much for so long and then it catches up. It’s just one of those periods where we have to dig in and get through this spell and hopefully we will be in and around it for the final run in.”

Re: CARDIFF CITY TODAY BRYSON/CONNOLLY/KADEEM HARRIS & M HAR

Cardiff City midfielder Craig Bryson has given boss Neil Warnock a significant injury boost this week, returning to action for the club's under-23s on Thursday afternoon.

The combative midfielder has seen his first season blighted by an Achilles problem, making just one appearance for the Bluebirds since the 3-1 win over Norwich City at the beginning of December.

But he looks to be making good progress, after completing 68 minutes of the young Bluebirds' 2-0 win over Coventry City.

Bryson's absence has been a great source of frustration for Warnock, who's injury list grew once more during the 2-0 win over Bolton on Tuesday night after Jamie Ward limped out of his City debut after just 13 minutes , while the likes of Aron Gunnarsson and Danny Ward remain on the treatment table.

The sight of the 31-year-old in action will certainly be roundly welcomed by Warnock, who could yet be set to welcome back two other stars to the first team set-up, with Kadeem Harris and Matthew Connolly also getting 75 and 45 minutes of action respectively.

We seriously have not missed Bryson. Paterson is so much better doing a similar job and Grujic offers a calming and controlling presence. Bryson might make the bench!
