Time to scrap youth development squads

Fri Feb 16, 2018 9:03 am

I'm sure other clubs are going down this route. A total waste of money. Any kid with huge potential signs for the scummy premier league clubs way before they're 16th birthday.

Haven't had any quality come through for decades. Time to admit it's all over. Finished. Club should do the decent thing now and admit defeat.

I tend to agree with you My son was in the academy and looking at his year
Tommy O’Sullivan playing at Torquay I believe
Liam Shepard - Peterbrough
Tom Lockyer - Bristol Rovers
Theo Wharton - York City
Josh Yowerth - Crawley
Jack Britton - I believe playing in Div 2 of Portuguese league
Declan Dalley - want to Man Utd but no longer plays
Then the rest playing welsh league
Many of these players played for Wales when they beat England 4-0 City had 7 players in that team but non have brought a penny into the club and that was a successful year of players in terms of making a living out of football but not for us

Not at all. Takes one or two and it pays for itself. Not only that we have a few promising players who are young. Obviously anything can happen. But they are showing promise

My question is how many players have we produced in the last 8 years from our Cardiff City DVP or Our Accademies that have made it to our first team?

8 years, not many!!

Josh Magenis - was he part of our youth? he's turned out alright.

I’ve felt this way ever since Man City poached Rabbi Matonda from us.

Unfortunately, our best youngsters will now be poached long before we ever find out if they’ll be good enough to break into our first team. Their agents get in their ear and tout them around to line their pockets with no consideration for the youngsters long term development. Man City probably offered Rabbi Matonda’s parents a house to relocate up Manchester, a car and goodness knows what else, and how could they turn that down?

Something needs to be done, as these days, the big rich clubs poach any youngster with decent potential and it saddens me when clubs who relied on their youth system like Crewe are now fighting to stay in the football league.

The premier league clubs are destroying the system, every youngster who shows any potiential is snapped up,then lost in the club's set up

To be honest, I just think its been run badly for years.

When Warnock came in he (or someone around the same time) completely overhauled it. If a player hadnt come anywhere near the first team by the time he's 21, then the chances of him "Developing" are very slim. Whats the point of keeping him? Just to make an 11 for game day?

The way its being used now is superb.
Most of the development players are under 20, those that are close to being decent are loaned out for real games,
those that are still young, use the development games to bring them through alongside fringe/injury players and
make up the rest with out of contract Trialists.

You may unearth a gem (Warnock style) if not it has cost nothing!

And we had him as a goal keeper and he left us in 2010 and is now a striker

And was not really part of our youth system.

Yeah I remember him being a keeper and one night I turned up at CCS and he was up top :laughing6:
Banging goals in for Charlton isn't he!? haven't seen the stats but I do see his name pop up a lot whilst watching Jeff on a Saturday afternoon.

And yet in ten years from around 2000 to 2010 Ramsey, Collins, Ledley, Matthews, Earnshaw, Gunter and Jerome came through our Youth side. Not bad!!

Earnshaw was probably a bit earlier but not much. And Jerome was released by Boro as a youngster and was developed by us coming through the youth team.

The point being that we developed some very good players in a short space of time.

He play for us a couple of times as a striker and could not hit a barn door.

He went of to Aberdeen and somehow made it into the Northern Ireland squad. He came on for them with 15 minutes to go against us at the Euros. It was then I knew we were through to the QF.

Jerome came to us when he was 18 hardly a youth production from the Cardiff system

He also made his first team appearance within 3 months of being here and less than one month from the start of the season which suggests he came straight into the first team squad
