NEIL WARNOCK UPDATES CARDIFF CITY FANS :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Friday 16th March 2018

Aron Gunnarsson will play 45 mins for Iceland :thumbright:

Main talking points :thumbright: :bluebird:

That’s all from Warnock. Here’s a summary of the main talking points from his press conference:

Joe Ralls and Aron Gunnarsson are making good progress from their injuries, although won’t feature at Derby

Etheridge, Paterson and Manga are among those going out on international duty - but Warnock says he’ll manage their playing time

He revealed why he doesn’t play Paterson in defence, but praised the free-scoring Scotsman too

Warnock laid down a challenge to Derby centre-back Curtis Davies ahead of his showdown with in-form Kenneth Zohore

Marko Grujic also spoke at length about his time with Cardiff

Injury latest on Ralls and Gunnarsson

Warnock updates on his injured crop...

NEIL WARNOCK:

“We’re not going to risk anybody. Gunnarsson is training with us now, he’s in the mix of it and it’ll be good to see him back in the fray. He’s going to play the first half with Iceland next week to see how it goes.
We will have eight games left after the window and if we can get Gunnarsson and Ralls back and so on. It will make it difficult for me but I’ve told the lads, I’ll just be picking the best 11 and 18 for each game. It has to be like that and it’s better to be like that than not having a choice.”

Callum Paterson...

NEIL WARNOCK:

"When I signed him, I knew he would score six or seven goals as a full-back but what I didn’t know is that he can’t defend!
So he was never going to be a right-back and we had to put him somewhere else. It’s his energy and his desire, we have to hold him back at times in training, it’s just full-on enthusiasm."

"The Hearts fans loved him and he definitely has a role in the wing-back position as well because he’s a bundle of energy and he’s good from set pieces. It was just a matter of trying to find a role. He’s irreplaceable at the moment."

NEIL WARNOCK:

'There's been no talk of automatic promotion'

Warnock is still cooling talk of the top two, despite Cardiff’s incredible streak of wins...

NEIL WARNOCK:

We’ve got some difficult fixtures on paper, we’ve got the worst run-in of everybody. So we don’t get carried away. There will be losses between now and the end of the season but we’ve got to fight and enjoy it. When you start expectations, you’re likely to disappoint, so we don’t have any.
I’ve not heard any talk about automatic promotion. But as a group we’ve earned the right to be where we are.

Does Warnock remember winning 7 on the bounce before?

Neil Warnock:

When you get to my age you forget everything!
But it’s just a nice feeling, the lads have done well and come through some difficult games. Everybody else comes up with the statistics and I always smile. I remember runs when you don’t lose for a long time, but consecutive wins doesn’t happen very often!

Craig Bryson is currently on loan from Sunday’s opponents Derby County, and won’t be available for selection this weekend.

Warnock: We don't know when we're beaten

Great question... Warnock explains how and why this latest winning run has come about.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"We’ve persevered in a lot of games, we’ve overcome things during a game and we don’t know when we’re beat. After our terrible run we had a good talk about that - and even on the terrible run we could have won most of their games. Football is about fine margins but I said let’s give it a go, get to 73 and get into the play-offs."

DERBY AWAY

NEIL WARNOCK:

'Derby away as tough as it gets'

There’s not many better squads in the whole league than what Gary’s assembled. They’ve had games when they’ve drawn where they should have won.
But it’ll be as tough as you get, Derby away. Lovely stadium, fabulous crowd and I always like going there. I used to enjoy the Baseball Ground as well.

Marko Grujic the on-loan Liverpool midfielder :thumbright: :bluebird:

Has Grujic experienced this before?

Seven wins on the bounce is a very healthy run... so has Marko Grujic experienced a run like it before?

Marko Grujic:

"Yes when I used to play in Serbia but it’s a different competition. It’s an impressive run but the players and staff need to play every game like it’s the first one. This one is important because it’s before the international break.
We won 16 games with Red Star and had 20 more points than 2nd place. If we do that (at Cardiff) we might be looking at Champions League!"

Grujic reflects on the Brentford win:

"An impressive win, the three points are always three points and I wish we played every game like that one. It was tough after conceding the early goal but the guys showed character and it was a massive win for us. We need to carry on with this impressive run this week, tough opponents in front of us, Derby is a big team with big expectation but we don’t care who’s our opposition."

Marko Grujic:

'It's more physical, my position is more defensive'

It’s not something new for us players from Serbia, we have a lot of players in England. The Championship style is different, more physical and my position is more defensive than I played for Liverpool.
The gaffer just told me what he wants and a lot of guys in the help have helped me adapt. I’m really happy in Cardiff, the city and the club.

When they reached 73 points...

NEIL WARNOCK:

To achieve that is an amazing thing but you can see they’re enjoying it. We could have been 2 or 3 down the other night but it was really good to see them fighting for each other. We didn’t let heads go down and we played some good stuff at times, created some good chances.

Smells like team spirit

NEIL WARNOCK:

It’s a very good spirit, that’s the reason we are where we are. I’ve had that kind of spirit before but we’ve got quite a lot of ability as well, going forward. It’s a good recipe for the Championship and every team needs leaders. We’ve got two or three of them and that’s stood us in good stead down the spine.

Big boost for final eight games?

NEIL WARNOCK:

Ralls was training well, I saw him and Jazz training well in the gym. If we can get the likes of Ralls and Gunnar back for the last 8 games, it’ll make my job more difficult - but it’s better being like that than not having a choice. If we can get through Sunday without any injuries, that’ll be great.

Warnock: 'We've lit the fuse with fans now!'

NEIL WARNOCK:

Warnock has been speaking about the brilliant away support Cardiff have been getting - with up to 3,000 making the trip to Derby this weekend.

The main thing is just to try and get a result if we can.
We’ll be taking a cracking following on Sunday. We’ve lit the fuse at the minute, Brentford was super with all those fans and looking at the notice-boards they’re booking their tickets and getting on their bikes now.

Players stepping up

NEIL WARNOCK:

“When we have lost players, we have other players coming in. Players like Damour the other night and Yanic (Wildschut) coming. You have to have a squad to cater because sods law means you can lose four players.”

“That’s what’s happened but players have come in and we haven’t changed, they have just fitted in. I think it’s because the way we train. To lose Ralls, Gunnarsson and Bryson. It would have been unheard of at the start of the season, we would have been thinking about relegation, but we’re still there. All credit to the lads. Marko is learning all the time. He made a mistake and gave the goal away the other night and in a way, that might help him because I keep telling him about not getting caught in the wrong positions, but he’s learning and needs to eliminate the things you get punished for in the Championship.”

Warnock on Zohore's incredible form

NEIL WARNOCK:

“This will be a good game for him on Sunday. I remember Curtis Davies saying he’d had him in his pocket so I’m looking forward to it. I’m hoping Ken is.
Gary Madine coming in has helped me. His attitude is amazing and as soon as Ken drops his level, Madine is on. Every club needs one of those strikers and who’s to say they don’t play together? Unfortunately I’ve only done it for a few minutes but I’m sure we’ll get the opportunity between now and the end of the season.
Warnock”

Neil Warnock on Etheridge...

“He’s done really well. It’s like looking at a different keeper. It’s been difficult coming to a big club – no disrespect to Walsall – and a big league. He’s going to make mistakes, there’s going to be scrutiny on him, but I think he’s taken it very well. He’s been fantastic.”

If I have read it right it sounds great news on Ralls and Gunnar being available for the run in. Despite it being a tough clutch of games at least we could be at almost full strength. That will be a massive boost.

Don't get your hopes up - Gunnar will play x 2 90 minutes for Iceland then come back with half a leg.

I personally can't see a way in for him now.

Grujic & Patterson are playing incredible for me and he won't drop Ralls once fit.

Disagree. Although I’m not a big fan of Gunnarsson, if he gets match fit Warnock will want to manage Paterson and give him a little rest. That’s when Gunnar might well fit in.
