Everything Ryan Giggs and history maker Gareth Bale said after Wales's emphatic win over China -

Thursday 22nd March 2018

Gareth Bale became his country's record goalscorer as he netted a hat-trick in Wales' emphatic 6-0 win over China in Nanning.

Here's everything the Real Madrid ace and manager Ryan Giggs said after the win at the Guangxi Sports Center.

How do you feel after becoming Wales' record goalscorer?

GB: On a personal note it’s obviously great to break the record. I couldn’t have done it without my team-mates over the years and obviously it’s not just an individual thing, it’s thanks to the whole team, everyone who I’ve played with and all the managers.

The most important thing for me and for us was to get off to a good start under the new manager and I thought we played very well.

We did exactly what he (Giggs) asked. There are still things to work on, but we’re happy with the way we’re going.

How do you sum up Gareth Bale's achievements tonight?

RG: It's a tremendous achievement, to be the top goalscorer in front of someone like Ian Rush, a legendary goalscorer and probably one of the best goalscorers I have ever seen.

Probably once upon time, (it was) a record that many people thought would not get beaten. But not only has he beaten it, he will carry on scoring as he is a tremendous talent. It's a fantastic moment for Gareth, he fully deserves it.

For me personally it was a great result, a great performance and there's things we can work on. It was fantastic seeing as we only had two days to prepare.

Also, Chris Gunter becoming the most capped outfield player. That is a great achievement for Chris.

What did you learn about the team tonight after such an impressive win?

RG: We wanted to get that strength in depth. Sometimes that has been an Achilles heel, if we have two or three players out then we struggle. We don’t want that any more. We want a competitive squad. If someone is missing through injury or suspension then we have someone to come in.

Just like all of the subs who came on they did really well. It is not easy when you come on come on and the game is won, to still push and put on a good performance is not easy.

There were some really good performances. Declan John was outstanding. It was a great night for a lot of individuals.

Wales' new manager Ryan Giggs during the opening match of the 2018 Gree China Cup
We want players looking over their shoulder. I was brought up in an environment where training was sometimes more difficult than the games and that is the kind of atmosphere that I want to generate.

What do you make of the Chinese team?

RG: Obviously it was a difficult night for China. We were at it right from the beginning, on the front foot and scored some fantastic goals.

And I have got the utmost respect for Marcello Lippi. I have played against his teams a lot, and they have all been fantastic teams so it is a great privilege to meet him in my first game, to come up against such a legendary coach.

Since we have arrived (in Nanning) it has been fantastic for all the players. I'm really impressed with the facilities, the hotel, the welcome and the players have enjoyed themselves, right from when we have landed we have been looked after, and it has been a fantastic advert for China and for Chinese football, without a shadow of a doubt.

And I would like the grass a little bit shorter please, I have asked a lot of times…

How does this rank in your achievements as a player for club and country? And looking back at your career with Wales do any particular goals stand out?

GB: Obviously you don’t really have time to think of your achievements when you are drained, but yes, it is right up there, if it is not the best achievement I have done.

Anything you do for your country is the pinnacle, it is the biggest honour you can have.

There has been some good goals along the way and some great moments so I suppose that when I come to the end of my career I can then look back, but for the time being I still want to carry on scoring, carry on playing well and taking this team as far as we can go in major competitions.

You gave little away before the game, what did you make of the performance?

RG: I think it was difficult because of the travelling. A lot of players had knocks so I wanted to give as much time to the players as possible, and also realising that it's an important part to the season, a lot of the players have played a lot of games, and making sure as it's my first game and I want to win it but it's also about being fair to the players and the clubs.

It was difficult getting that balance and maybe that's why I wasn't giving any ideas away about what team I was going to play because I wanted to leave it until the last minute.

Gareth Bale is ongratulated by new manager Ryan Giggs as he is substituted after scoring the sixth goal during the opening match of the 2018 China Cup

What did you make of your performance?

GB: As I've said, it's a massive honour to break any record for your country which is great. For me personally I felt I played well and the team played well. We played on the front foot and we were at it from the start.

We just tried to enjoy ourselves, and when we enjoy ourselves we play our best. That's what we tried to do, enjoy our football and play to the best of our ability.

Full time: China 0-6 Wales :thumbright:

As first days go, Ryan Giggs has had a good one here. A hat-trick for Gareth Bale, two goals for Sam Vokes and a first international goal for Harry Wilson.

GARETH BALE FOR EDEN HAZARD?

Sky Sports

22/03/18

Gareth Bale is busy scoring goals for Wales in China, but the Real Madrid man, already linked with a move away from the club, could be headed to Chelsea.

Don Balon, the Spanish weekly newspaper, is reporting the forward could move to Stamford Bridge - but Eden Hazard may be heading the other way.

Also links with Man utd... my guess is he'd go there if the opportunity came up.
