The seven Cardiff City stars out of contract in the summer

Tuesday 17th April 2018

ByIan Mitchelmore

Junior Hoilett is one of seven Cardiff City players who will see their contracts with the Bluebirds expire in the summer, but has suppose to have agreed in principal to sign a new contract with Warnock.

The Canadian moved to the Welsh capital as a free agent shortly after Neil Warnock was named as Paul Trollope's permanent successor in October 2016 and penned a one-year contract extension last summer.

He has played a huge role in the Bluebirds' bid for promotion this season, scoring nine Championship goals as well as netting twice in the FA Cup.

The 27-year-old's current deal will expire in the summer, although speaking to the BBC in March, Cardiff's Chief Executive Ken Choo revealed that he is confident Hoilett will remain in South Wales next season having held positive contract talks with the winger and Warnock.

Aron Gunnarsson:

Undoubtedly the key concern for the Cardiff faithful is the future of Aron Gunnarsson .

The Iceland international is the club's longest serving player having been in South Wales since joining the Bluebirds from Coventry City in 2011.

But the Iceman rejected a new deal with the club earlier in the season, with Warnock being resigned to losing the midfielder at the end of the season.

However, the Cardiff boss did admit that Gunnarsson could be tempted to extend his stay with Cardiff if they secure promotion into the promised land of the Premier League this season.

"I can understand his point of view," said Warnock in November .

"He's at an age now where he's been in the Championship for 10 years. When you've been in the Championship for that long, it's bloody hard work.

"He's said he'd love to get us up and then it's a different ball game, he'd love to play for us in the Premier League – if I wanted him!"

THE OTHER PLAYERS:

Elsewhere, Greg Halford, Frederic Gounongbe, Ibrahim Meite, Brian Murphy and Ben Wilson are all out of contract this summer.

Halford - who turns 34 later this year - has been used sparingly by Warnock since he joined the Bluebirds from the Yorkshireman's former club Rotherham United in January 2017, and it looks as though he will depart the Welsh capital in the summer.

Gounongbe has made just three substitute appearances all season and appears to have played his final game in the blue of Cardiff along with Ibrahim Meite and Ben Wilson who have been allowed to leave South Wales on loan this season.

LEE CAMP:

Given that Lee Camp - currently on loan at Sunderland - could feature in Warnock's long-term plans, Murphy may well be deemed surplus to requirements at the end of the campaign.

However, if the Cardiff boss continues to persist with the Republic of Ireland man over the Northern Irishman, then that could well spell the end for Camp.

THE LOAN PLAYERS:

In addition to the seven players out of contract, the loan spells of Marko Grujic , Yanic Wildschut, Jamie Ward, Armand Traore, Craig Bryson and Liam Feeney will also expire at the end of the season.

Keep : Hoilett and Murphy

Let go: Halford, Wilson, Bryson Gunnarsson, fred and meite

Use the money saved on wages to buy Grujic if possible.

Let Bryson go??

As for Grujic he's in Liverpool's long term plans and won't be for sale.

Whether we go up or stay in the championship I’m not concerned about any of the players leaving except for Hoilet.

Traore is not on loan.

We signed him till the end of the season after his contract was cancelled by Forest.

That was the reason we were allowed to sign him the day after the window shut because his contract had been cancelled

Just Hoilett to stay

I can see why some would keep Murphy but unless we can get rid of Camp I don't see the point in keeping him as neither would get much game time you would hope as we will need another keeper to compete and cover Etheridge.

As for Traore i'm pretty sure the club announced it as a loan, I remember thinking it was odd as news articles had suggested he was signed on a short term deal. Either way I think he is out of contract in the summer so if we want him he will be available.

Etheridge and a new keeper plus camp should be enough, I'm assuming we also have a u23 keeper as well.

While I agree how often is a 3rd keeper used? Unless someone wants to take camp off our hands then we have him for a other year. I don't see the logic in paying camp and Murphy to both so very little if anything.

Just seen you said a new keeper and etheridge thought you just meant keep the keepers how they are.. wouldn’t be surprised if he maybe went back to Rotherham or something mjnd

God no, imagine camp in goal for 5 weeks

Ideally we'd move camp on and keep Murphy as back up but the slating camp is getting I can't see anyone wanting him.
