Neil Warnock has the last laugh after Nottingham Forest legend's bitter attack on Cardiff City boss

By Ian Mitchelmore

Saturday 21st April 2018

A total of 146 days have passed since Cardiff City continued their powerful march towards promotion with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Junior Hoilett's early header along with a stunning strike from Danny Ward sealed all three points for the Bluebirds on that day.

But while Cardiff's display against Forest on November 26 last year had the travelling supporters singing all the way back home to South Wales, their performance had those in Nottinghamshire fuming.

Then Forest boss Mark Warburton was left raging with the match officials and went on to accuse the Bluebirds of "continual delaying".

However, those comments merely proved to be the calm before the storm when you look at what was to follow.

Forest icon Kenny Burns - who tasted European Cup glory with the Reds - launched a truly bitter attack on Neil Warnock after seeing the Bluebirds emerge victorious against his former club.

Writing in a column for the Nottingham Post after Cardiff's 2-0 success at the City Ground, Burns slammed Cardiff's style of play under the Yorkshireman and accused them of time-wasting.

And those comments weren't made off the cuff either.

Earlier in the season, the Scot had admitted that he "can't stand the bloke" when discussing Cardiff's veteran boss.

But ahead of the latest meeting between the two sides at Cardiff City Stadium tonight, Burns could well be watching on with his tail firmly between his legs given the contrasting fortunes of the Bluebirds and Forest this season...

“Some people will say that was brilliant tactics, but it’s not." - Kenny Burns

Warnock's style isn't for everyone.

But ultimately, his formula has proved to be a winning one this season as far as the Bluebirds are concerned.

When asked about the 'Warnock Way' earlier in the campaign, the Cardiff boss delivered a truly magnificent response.

“I once went to an interview at Norwich and they asked if their fans would accept the ‘Warnock Way’? I said what do you mean, winning? I don’t understand what the ‘Warnock Way’ is," said the manager.

And he's right too.

Since the Bluebirds secured victory against Forest in the previous meeting between the sides, exactly half of the 2017-18 Championship campaign has been played.

Cardiff have won 13 of their 23 league outings since beating Forest who have won just five of their last 23 Championship fixtures since going down to the Bluebirds in November.

Just imagine what the Bluebirds could achieve if Warnock actually deployed "brilliant" tactics...

“He can have the three points from Sunday’s match between the Reds and Cardiff, I’d much rather have a manager like Mark Warburton in the home dugout at the City Ground – a likeable manager who gets his teams to play exciting, attacking football." - Kenny Burns

Following their defeat to the Bluebirds, Forest claimed just four points from their next six league outings.

A 3-2 win over strugglers Bolton and a draw at Preston came in the middle of a run of defeats to Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, the latter two of which were both at the City Ground.

It was a run that saw Warburton sacked as the club's manager on New Year's Eve, with Spaniard Aitor Karanka being named as his successor just over a week later.

So Burns may well have been happy with the style he was seeing under Warburton.

But it wasn't something he got to witness for long, as the results on the pitch were quite simply disastrous.

“I know Forest talked to him when they needed a manager a while back, but I’m glad that never came to anything, because I don’t like his attitude or the way his teams play." - Kenny Burns

Warnock faced Forest in his third match in charge of the Bluebirds, a game his troops went on to win 2-1 thanks to first half goals from Aron Gunnarsson and Joe Ralls.

And ahead of that encounter, Warnock revealed how he had been snubbed by Forest in the summer of 2016, with the City Ground outfit plumping for Phlippe Montanier - who lasted less than seven months in the role - instead of the current Cardiff boss.

But as part of his astonishing attack on Warnock earlier this season, Burns admitted that he was relieved Forest didn't appoint the Yorkshireman as their boss.

Rewind back to the final day of the 2016-17 campaign, and Burns' comments seem all the more perplexing.

Forest secured their Championship status with a 3-0 win over Ipswich Town, although even then they only survived by the skin of their teeth, finishing above Blackburn Rovers on goal difference.

All the while, Cardiff were busy clinching a top half finish by thrashing newly-promoted Huddersfield Town 3-0 at the John Smith's Stadium having been 23rd in the table when Warnock arrived in the Welsh capital.

Since then, Cardiff have kicked on to a whole new level as they look to continue their promotion charge by doing the league double over Forest tonight while Karanka's side are simply looking to end another turbulent campaign on a positive note.

So the Forest faithful could be forgiven for thinking "what if" when they look across to the dugout from the away section of a bouncing Cardiff City Stadium tonight.

And so too could Kenny Burns.
