Steve McClaren has been tipped to sign Derby County striker Chris Martin and Nottingham Forest forward Jamie Ward for QPR.

Both players played under McClaren at Derby and have been linked with moves to Loftus Road following McClaren’s appointment as R’s boss.

Jamie Ward, 32, joined Forest from Derby in 2015 and has been out of the first-team picture at the City Ground for some time.

He joined Cardiff City on loan in January but made just four appearances for the Welsh side, with two of those coming as a substitute.

Martin, 29, has been out of favour at Derby – he spent last season on loan at Fulham and the second half of this term on loan at Reading.

The Mirror say McClaren is looking to snap up Martin for £500,000 and also has Ward in his sights.

McClaren said last week he expects money to be tight at Rangers.

He told Sky Sports: “Every job is a coaching job – developing and making players better – but especially here where the budget’s not so big. Money’s tight.

“The academy has produced players. They’ve been given a chance and now they need developing and encouraging

“The owner, the board and management have done well over the last two years, got the budget down and encouraged young players to come through.

“They’ve been a breath of fresh air, the youngsters coming through, and we as a club ought to build on that.”

Steve McClaren plots first QPR signing from Nottingham Forest

QPR are interested in signing Nottingham Forest forward Jamie Ward, according to the Nottingham Post.

The new QPR boss Steve McClaren is keen to make the Northern International his first signing of the summer. The former England manager has replaced Ian Holloway at the helm at Loftus Road.

QPR are keen to add Ward to their squad to boost their attacking options for next season. The 32-year-old is vastly experienced at Championship level and is likely to become available at Nottingham Forest over the coming months.

Ward has spent the latter part of this campaign on Cardiff City and played 4 times for the Bluebirds side who were promoted to the Premier League under Neil Warnock.

He started his career at Aston Villa but never broke into the first-team at Aston Villa so left them in 2007 to join Torquay United. He spent a season with Torquay before he was snapped up by Chesterfield. Ward was prolific for the Spirerites in League Two and scored 31 goals in 74 games.

A move to Sheffield United followed for Ward in 2008 and he spent three years at Bramall Lane. He was then sold to Derby County in 2011 and then moved onto their bitter rivals Nottingham Forest four years later.

Ward has played 62 times for the Reds and spent time on loan at Burton Albion last season. He is experienced player and would be a shrewd signing for QPR.
