Fulham owner Shahid Khan had a dig at Cardiff City following his side's play-off final victory over Aston Villa, slamming the Bluebirds for playing "19th century football".

The Cottagers beat Villa 1-0 in the Championship showpiece, meaning they will join Cardiff and Wolves in next season's Premier League.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side were praised throughout the past year or so for their expansive style, with Tom Cairney scoring a typically fluent goal to win the Wembley final.

And controversial owner Khan couldn't resist making a derisory comment about the Bluebirds' own style of football — despite the fact Cardiff finished in the automatic promotion spots ahead of Fulham.



“We have seen the teams that have got promoted," he said in an interview with the Times.

"Wolves were the best team in the Championship. Cardiff, they play 19th-century football and will have to make changes if they want to stay up."

"We are looking not to mess with the style and chemistry of our team."

Khan also insisted Fulham wouldn't by shy to spend, which isn't a policy Neil Warnock wants to replicate in South Wales.

The Yorkshireman has said he wouldn't splash out "silly money" whereas Khan — who has ambitious plans to buy Wembley from the FA — is thinking differently at Craven Cottage.


"We are not just going to scrape by, we want to get better," he added.

"This is the time to have the productive discussion about who is available.

"There is this concept of splashing cash. You have to invest but just lighting money on fire doesn’t win Championships. Being irresponsible doesn’t help you win. We’re going to do whatever helps us win and if it involves money then we’re not spendthrifts.”

He is also adamant that teenage wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon will stay at Fulham despite major interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur.

“We don’t want Sessegnon leaving,” Khan said.

“I don’t think he wants to go. He’s going to be at Fulham for the coming year, leading us into the Premier League. Frankly, if we had not been promoted, well, we have a responsibility to our players. He’s been there since he was eight. We want to do the right thing for him and he is Fulham through and through.

“He is going to be there next season.”

Agree - Mitrovic played an important part for the 2nd half of the season.

What’s the point having having a dig now..bit pointless and shows lack of class

What I do know is us 19th century team and supporters are going to have a good time back in the premier league

I always thought Fulham were OK as a club but their attitude over the last few months has completely changed my mind

They kept saying how they were better than others in the Championship (mainly having a dig at us) yet blew it in the big final game. The manager said we'd crack, yet they did.

Then after the play-off final Cairney stands infront of the Sky cameras on the pitch and says how they deserve it because they were "the best team in the Championship" Hmmmmm, the table I'm looking at would tend to prove that theory wrong

They play pretty football and got lucky with Mitrovic, just look at the stats for before and after he signed. Are they going to out play teams in the Premiership ? Not unless they spend £50m+.

I really hope they go straight back down and we put them in their place next season.

I've said this elsewhere but how will the likes of Fulham fare when they play teams who play the same football but with better players.

He clearly likes the 19th century as he wears a 19th century Tash, bought a club that play in a 19th century ground and with supporters from the same era

We play Neil Warnock style football, and I can think of twenty one other Championship clubs last season, who would swap places with us right now, playing this type of football!

What a bellend! We finished above them in the league for a reason.

They won't find premiership as forgiving as championship that's for sure! Think it carried away with 23 unbeaten games and as affected their egos Spending 50m+ won't guarantee sfa. And at least we know it will be hard they seem to think it's going to be a doddle for them to stay up

Thats added some spice to next seasons games against them.

Wanted fulham to beat villa , but the comments post match by cairney and now their owner, well lets hope the opening game is against fulham.

they got a number of decisions wrongly go for them in the games i watched..not going to get them in the prem..

We were use to having 30/40% of the ball in the championship and it will be the same in the premier Fulham will get know where near the 70% the are use to in the premier and their defence is not the best Totally different game for them in the premiership.
For both clubs the transfers in are vital

Just look at the table we were better than them we had the more points than them,They only look good when mitrovic came in January before that they were a shambles. And if their think that they can play their possession based football in the Premier league they got another thing coming.

The thing with Fulham is if they keep their squad they will try to play neat football like last season but in the PL there are many clubs who do it much better with much better players. They will either have to improve their squad or change tactics.
Their present defence certainly is not good enough.

Any way you look at it our style of football still won more games than Fulham's did...

Just adds a bit of pressure on their part, hopefully everybody keeps putting us down and writing us off. So called experts suggesting Wolves & Fulham are capable of finishing mid table, we'll see??

If you live in or around London, the last club you'd support is Fulham, as demonstrated by their soppy wet-fart fans who everyone looks down upon.

They will be outplayed by possession tippy tappy teams who do it better in the PL and when it gets tough, buckle under the pressure like they did in the run-in.

Plastic club, plastic supporters and with an owner who looks like a throwback from the Raj. And they can stick their happy clappers up their arse whilst they sing their pathetic single chant.

If they play in the Premier League in the same way that they played in the Championship then they will finish below us. The top teams are so much better than the Championship, and the bottom teams in the Premier play more like we do than like Fulham do. They may prove me wrong, but I think they could be in for a rude awakening, whereas we are going into this with our eyes wide open.

They have a lower average attendance than us (and in London!). Thought everyone wanted to watch their attractive brand of football?!

Much better footballing teams in the Prem than Fulham; Mitrovitch has no proven track record in the Prem; their defence plainly isn't good enough and Sessignon may well yet jump ship!!
