A vast array of players have been linked with moves to the Welsh capital in recent weeks, but one rumour that has gathered pace regards Chris Brunt. The 33-year-old Northern Irishman is seeking a new challenge after current club West Bromwich Albion suffered the ignominy of Premier League relegation last season, and Cardiff are believed to be interested.
Acquiring a player recently relegated from the Premier League may seem an unwise idea for a club currently hoping to avoid that fate in the coming season but, when looking at West Brom’s performances with and without Brunt, it’s easy to see why such a move would appeal to Cardiff:

Average goals scored per game dropped by 0.2 while average goals against climbed by 0.6, highlighting just how keenly his absence was felt at both ends of the part. More alarming, however, was the side’s win ratio.
The 23% win rate achieved by West Brom with Brunt in the side was unlikely to save them from relegation, but the 0% win rate without him was guaranteed to condemn them to a bottom 3 spot. To fail to win a single game without Brunt in 12 attempts is truly telling, and Baggies fans must wonder how their side became so dependent on just 1 man.
While age may not be on Brunt’s side, he’s a wiley Premier League operator with vast amounts of experience to share. His knowhow could be vital within a squad largely untested at the very highest level, and as such it’s a signing that would make perfect sense for Cardiff at this stage.
