Cardiff City and Serie A side Cagliari have joined the race to sign former Hull City striker Abel Hernandez this summer.

The striker is available on a free transfer after rejecting a deal to extend his stay at the KCOM Stadium into the new season, bringing his four-year stint in East Yorkshire to an end.

Hernandez scored eight goals in ten games for the Tigers in the Championship last season in a campaign that was severely hampered by injury and his impressive haul has alerted a number of clubs of his availability.

Leeds United have been touted as the favourites to sign the Uruguayan this summer, having been strongly linked with a move for Hernandez since the transfer window opened at the end of last season.

However, the Whites face plenty of competition for his signature with Genoa, Celtic, Galatasaray and Wolves rumoured to be interested, and it seems two more clubs have entered the fold.

Premier League new boys Cardiff City have registered an interest in the 27-year-old as Neil Warnock looks to build a team capable of surviving in the top flight next season.

However, reports in Italy are suggesting Sardinian-based Serie A outfit Cagliari are also keeping tabs on the striker and they are keen to take the striker back to the Italian league, where he enjoyed a fine spell with Palermo before moving to City.

Cardiff City have joined the race for Abel Hernandez

Football 72

Tuesday 19th June 2018

The 27-year-old is leaving Championship side Hull City at the end of the month on a free transfer when his contract expires.

Hernandez has been a top target for Leeds United and it has been a transfer saga that has dragged on for a while now. It appeared for a moment that he was Elland Road-bound but there have been doubt over whether they would get it over the line due to the time it has taken.

Leeds will now have to face competition from newly promoted Premier League side Cardiff City for his signature. The Bluebirds have been busy adding to their squad ahead of the next campaign and have already signed Josh Murphy from Norwich City and Greg Cunningham from Preston North End.

Hernandez is a new target for Cardiff and he has played in the top flight before. He managed to score 39 goals in 99 games for the Tigers over four seasons but his best form was in the Championship. Nevertheless, he is a free agent so would be cheaper for Cardiff to sign over them having to spend £10 million plus for a Premier League quality striker.

Leeds are hoping to get some big deals done this summer and their fans signalled their excitement of the possibility of signing Abel Hernandez. However, this move gets more and more uncertain after every passing day and the news that Cardiff have joined the race is another blow for the Whites.
