“ Snodgrass situation assessed “

Mon Jun 25, 2018 10:18 am

Robert Snodgrass was identified as being one of Cardiff City's main transfer targets earlier this summer.

Monday 25th June 2018

The winger is still under contract at West Ham, although it remains to be seen whether or not he will get the chance to impress in the English capital having spent the 2017-18 season on loan with Aston Villa.

So with that in mind, here's the full assessment on a potential swoop for the West Ham man.

What's his current situation?

The 30-year-old Scot joined West Ham from Hull City in January last year, signing a three-and-a-half year deal with the Hammers.

He featured 15 times for the club in the latter half of the 2016-17 campaign but was allowed to join Aston Villa on loan for the entirety of the 2017-18 season.

Snodgrass played 43 times for Steve Bruce's side, scoring seven goals as Villa agonisingly missed out on promotion via the play-offs.

He has since returned to West Ham and could well get a chance to shine under new boss Manuel Pellegrini at the Olympic Stadium, although it remains to be seen whether or not he is in the former Man City manager's plans.

Do Cardiff need him and where would he fit in?

Warnock had plenty of success when using a 4-3-3 formation last term, and of course that requires having two pacy wingers who can also provide a goal threat.

In that regard, Junior Hoilett and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing undoubtedly fit the bill.

But the former's future remains uncertain, with Warnock still waiting for the Canadian's decision on the club's contract offer while the latter - who starred in his debut campaign in South Wales - has never played in the Premier League.

They also have Kadeem Harris while Anthony Pilkington can operate in a wide position.

But with Jamie Ward and Yanic Wildschut both departing following their loan spells with the Bluebirds, along with the exit of Matty Kennedy who was released, Warnock clearly wanted to bolster his options, something he did by recruiting Josh Murphy from Norwich City.

And Snodgrass' ability to play on either wing - although he predominantly operated on the right for Villa - will no doubt be a major asset if he were to make the move to the Welsh capital.

What would he bring to the party?

We spoke to Gregg Evans - a sports reporter for the Birmingham Mail - to find out about Snodgrass' time with Aston Villa last season.

"It took him a while to get started as he lacked match fitness when he arrived, but after a short settling-in period, his form started to improve by early October and by the turn of the year he was changing games single-handedly," said Evans.

"He chipped in with important goals and plenty of assists - the second-most in the division by the end of the season.

"Snodgrass was well liked, spoke passionately about winning promotion and returning to the Premier League, and was the joker of the pack.

"He played right-wing for the whole season and forced Albert Adomah out to the left because he was so important.

"He faded out of form towards the end of the season and lost his creative spark but still turned out whole-hearted performances and never gave up.

"Strengths: Never-say-die attitude, experienced, likeable, quickly fits into new surroundings.

"Weaknesses: Looked tired towards the end of last season, will need to improve to if he's going to record the same stats as last term in the Premier League."

What has Neil Warnock said about him?

The Yorkshireman briefly worked with Snodgrass during his time at Leeds United, although the wideman was sold to Norwich City.

Warnock told talkSPORT earlier this month: “A week before [the season started], Norwich came in for Snodgrass and Ken Bates said to me: ‘you’ve got to sell him for £1 million as we need the money’.

“In the end they got £3 million, and he said: ‘you can have half of whatever we get’. Then, unfortunately, two days later Ken told me the bank had stopped him from spending any money.

“Snodgrass… I could have cried. He was the one chance we had. He came to see me and I said: ‘I don’t want you to go’.

“He said: ‘just for the family gaffer, I’ve got to go!’

“And he was right and I had to let him go. That just about finished me off up there… I had no chance!”

Warnock also reveals his admiration for the winger in his book, The Gaffer, in which he discusses his time at Elland Road.

And what has the player himself said?

Writing on Instagram after Villa's Championship play-off final defeat to Fulham, Snodgrass said: "Devastated to lose, we tried for you and it wasn’t enough, I am gutted we didn’t achieve our goal, but I am delighted I got the chance to play for this terrific club and thank everybody from fans players and staff from day one making me feel at home.

"Whatever happens I have loved pulling on that jersey and met some great people at Aston Villa Football Club."

Given Villa's financial troubles, a return to Villa Park looks to be out of the question for the Scot.

And if his comments before Villa's loss to the Cottagers are anything to go by, it seems that Snodgrass is determined to be plying his trade in the Premier League next term, either with West Ham or elsewhere.

“I came on loan to Aston Villa to be part of something special, to try and help them get back into the Premier League,” Snodgrass told the Express.

“I can’t say it was a straightforward decision, though, because I had a situation where I could only go on loan to a Championship club.

“The owners at West Ham wouldn’t let me go to a Premier League club. There were four or five Championship clubs interested and Aston Villa were 16th or 17th at the time, so it looked as if it would be tough for them to get promotion.

“But I assessed it and thought: ‘If there’s one team that could kick on, it will probably be them.’ And I knew most of the staff here which was a big factor.

“I wanted to part of something and we haven’t looked back since I came in. This game is a chance for me to play in the Premier League again, whether that’s with West Ham or Aston Villa.

“Now as I sit here, I’ve got a second chance to play in front of 90,000 and get this team back to the Premier

The Scot has Premier League experience and he certainly knows where the goal is too.

His versatility would be a major plus for Warnock and the Bluebirds, and it's testimony to the Snodgrass' impressive performances for Villa that Warnock tasked left-back Joe Bennett with a man-marking job on the Scot when the sides met in April.

A loan move could well be the most realistic option given that Snodgrass still has two years remaining on his current deal with the Hammers while Warnock has spoken of his desire to bring in some players on loan deals too.

So you can't help but feel Snodgrass could make a real impact if he were to move to Cardiff City Stadium.

Snodgrass won't be allowed to join another premier club. Hence he won't be coming to Cardiff.

Has the been said? :?

If you read the article, it states that was the situation last season and not this ;)

West Ham are ideally looking to offload him for a fee but the simple truth is their hierarchy just don't want him there. They'll have their reasons but with it being public knowledge, it will reduce the likelihood of a large fee being involved :ayatollah:

He had a big falling out with Karen brady after she critisized his signing, said it was not a great triumph to sign him. I cannot see him staying there whatever happens, City or some other club

David Sullivan tweeted that his son had begged him not to sign Snodgrass. Snodgrass replied saying "Thanks for the support".

Seems like the only one wanting to sign him was Sullivan, the manager did not want him either, I cannot in any way see him staying there even with a new manager, he was not welcome there in the beginging and I don't think that anything has changed

West Ham winger Robert Snodgrass has sent a message to Manuel Pellegrini - or maybe potential suitors - that he's keeping himself in shape ahead of the new season.

The Scottish winger spent last season on-loan at Aston Villa in the Championship as they lost to Fulham in the play-off final at Wembley. Snodgrass had reportedly been targeting a return to Villa Park but their subsequent financial problems has put pay to any chance of that happening.

New West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to give everyone a chance in east London before deciding who makes the cut and who doesn't and Snodgrass should get his chance to impress on pre-season tour in Switzerland at the start of next month.

Football.London understands that the Scotsman is one of the players who could be sold by the club this summer to trim down the squad and boost the potential transfer kitty but that no bids have come in for his services yet.

And the winger took to Instagram on Sunday to keep us all up to date with how his summer is going as he put in plenty of yards on a treadmill while on holiday, which you can see below.

The 21-year-old is supposedly on the same list as Snodgrass for players that might least east London this summer as Manuel Pellegrini re-shapes the squad.

The new manager has brought in Ryan Fredericks, Issa Diop and Lukasz Fabianski so far this summer and is still working on a deal to bring Felipe Anderson to the London Stadium.

Pellegrini and new director of football Mario Husillos are due to meet with Hammers co-chairman David Sullivan at his Essex mansion on Monday as the duo officially begin their roles at the club.
