The big name Cardiff City players who may have to leave this summer

By Dominic Booth

Wednesday 4th July 2018

The additions of Josh Murphy , Greg Cunningham , Alex Smithies and Bobby Reid add quality and depth to the Bluebirds' squad, but their arrivals spell bad news for some other stars.

Cardiff are helped by the fact that many 2017-18 loan stars, such as Craig Bryson, Jamie Ward and Yanic Wildschut, have returned to their parent clubs.

There are still some big names contracted to the club that may find opportunities hard to come by in the coming season.

Here are some who may have to leave this summer if they want to be playing week in, week out...

Lee Tomlin

Signed as the marquee player for 2017-18, it just hasn't happened for Tomlin. At times the mercurial playmaker can be magical, at others he seems to lack the work rate needed in a Warnock team. His time in the Welsh capital has largely been a frustrating one.

Lee Tomlin, on loan from Cardiff City, in action against Nottingham Forest
Despite the fact Cardiff paid £1.5million for his services 12 months ago, Tomlin was loaned out to Nottingham Forest , who now look favourites to secure his permanent signature this summer.

He was a better fit in Aitor Karanka's system at the City Ground and it is expected a deal will be thrashed out between the two parties. The Bluebirds will want to recoup the transfer fee they paid if the 29-year-old is to depart.

If and when that transpires, Tomlin's time at Cardiff will be a case of 'what might have been' for many supporters who marvelled at his ability.

Gary Madine

Another one whose time at Cardiff has not matched up to the hype generated by his signing.

It's staggering to think the Bluebirds paid £6million for Madine less than six months ago. The front-man, despite fierce backing from Warnock , never looked comfortable in a blue shirt and has been criticised by supporters.

Warnock may continue to insist Madine has a role to play in the coming season — as he did last term.

But the bare facts are that the former Bolton striker has failed to find the net in 13 Cardiff appearances.

Cardiff are expected to sign another striker before the season starts on August 11, that's before even factoring in newcomer Reid and Kenneth Zohore. Madine may find his first team prospects limited if he sticks around and a departure could be imminent.

Could he return to Bolton, perhaps, where he did score goals?

Kadeem Harris

Harris has become something of a forgotten man at Cardiff since an unfortunate ankle injury in pre-season before the 2017-18 campaign.

That, coupled with the form of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing on the right wing, meant he made just three appearances in the whole of last season.

Although the former Wycombe prodigy signed fresh terms with the Bluebirds 12 months ago, he could seek a move elsewhere to reignite his career.

At 25 and after breaking through stylishly in 2016-17, Harris cannot afford to wait for opportunities that might not come, especially after the signing of wide man Murphy.

Anthony Pilkington

Many Cardiff fans may be loathe to see Pilkington leave, but his time in a blue shirt may just be up after serving the club well for the past four seasons.

There is no doubt the 30-year-old played a vital role in last season's promotion, scoring a memorable last-gasp equaliser at Sheffield United and other important goals.

He was lauded by Warnock for his dedication despite seeing precious few first team opportunities.

But with a year remaining on his Cardiff deal and regular football in the Premier League looking unlikely next term, a move now probably benefits all parties.

Omar Bogle

Another forgotten man who many Bluebirds fans were impressed with whenever he appeared last season.

Bogle may have picked up a red card against Bristol City, he may have been loaned out in January to Peterborough, but in fits and starts he looked a real goal threat.

Cardiff City's Omar Bogle had an eventful game against Bristol City last season, scoring and getting sent off (Image: PA)
Warnock admitted signing Bogle was something of a gamble, but the former non-league man scored three in three at one stage last season.

As with Madine and Pilkington, the arrival of Reid and another forward could block Bogle's path to the first team. It wouldn't be a major surprise were he to depart on loan.

The problem for Cardiff is Tomlin, Pilks & Gary Madine have been given massive wages by Cardiff themselves and Championship clubs can't afford to pay them.

£20,000 to £30,000 a week.

Trouble is that this smacks of what happened previously..don t they ever learn at city..we will end up paying off players to leave again....it makes them unsellable ..clubs wont pay the same wages and the players wont go...Rickie Lambert.. here we go again and thats just naming one!

Lee Tomlin's wages now £30,000 a week, I can't see other clubs affording him, so hopefully he shines for us.

Anthony Pilks, time to find another club, but yet another player on £20,000 plus a week.

Gary Madine also now hitting the £30,000 plus a week and cost us £6mill.

We need to offload players like these to make room for better :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

But most of this was on condition we got to the Premier.

Even so the idea of thinking the likes of Madine would make a Premier striker was a high risk.

I for one would like to see Tomlin have another crack. I agree with most supporters that his work rate doesnt match his quality but thats something he can work on. As for the others i agree its time to move them on but realise it could be difficult.

I’d get rid of Madine and keep pilks/Tomlin who are good players on their day.

Agree and Connolly to go too

As it stands personally I would just get rid of Pilkington, I don't see him fitting anywhere in this current squad.

However I expect them all with probably the exception of Medine to be moved on, maybe Harris will stay.

Pilks deserves a crack in the prem. The rest of that line up should go.

We aren’t going to get better without doubling what we are paying these. And would those players be twice as good? Of course not. Madine and Tomlin both have the chance to prove themselves as Premier League quality players and Warnock is the man to get the best out of them. They are not top 6 Premier League players, but they are easily good enough for the lower reaches of the Premier League and are being paid an appropriate wage for that. Pilkington deserves a crack at the Premier League again, and his versatility off the bench is always useful. Let’s give them a chance.

These players are not going to be first team players. So in asking whether to keep them we should consider
Their cost to the club
Whether they could be game changer off the bench
Whether they are or could develop to be premiership quality

Most don't meet the criteria. I.e. they are expensive and at presentable are not pre m quality. In fairness Tonkin might have an impact of the bench- but not likely at Pre m level.
prob the only one I would want to keep us Bible. He has pace can score goals and is still going and might develop.NW and his staff know his potential and attitude so they can decide.I
The previous poster said Madin e is not top 6 quality :laughing5: :laughing5: Now that is stating the bleeding obvious!!

Madine will be a regular first team player. Mark my words. Possibly Tomlin, but more of an impact player off the bench. Warnock brought them in with the thought of them playing in the Premier League. Its all a question of opinions, and for what its worth, its my opinion that Madine will get a regular go and Tomlin realises this might be his last chance at the Premier. That recent photograph on here showing that he has lost some weight over the summer is a sign of his good intentions.

And if it doesn't work out he'll be off on loan in the January transfer window.

He has played in the Prem before.

Don't really see why he deserve another go with us, we need better.

Sorry what games were watching when you decided Madine never looked comfortable in a blue shirt?? i think he played well when given a chance, he was excellent at Leeds away when starting a game.. He get his head to the ball and brought others into the game. Yes he missed a pen in one game but so did another city player...lets give players a full chance to be judged, i dislike city fans who make this limited judgement on players. its one of the worse things about supporting city over the years its our failure to get behind players. oh sorry we beat Real Madrid once so we must attract all the great players ..not..

Hoping Tomlin gets another shot and has a good pre season - could be deadly if his head is right. Another body in midfield too, we need this.

Madine is alright. I still reckon he’ll do well for us. He’s a completely different option for us. Once that first goal comes he’ll be away.
