Tavistock AFC 0 Cardiff City 6:

Gary Madine at the double as Bluebirds cruise to comfortable pre-season win -

By Dominic Booth

Monday 16th July 2018

Deepest Devon was bathed in beautiful sunshine, Cardiff City’s players were in relaxed mood and, best of all for Neil Warnock, his confident looking team smashed home six goals.

The veteran manager has made a habit of taking his teams to the South West – his favourite part of the world, save perhaps for Sheffield – for a pre-season canter in recent years.

And canter was the word once again, as Cardiff made short work of South Peninsula Premier League outfit AFC Tavistock, running out 6-0 winners at Langsford Park.

The goals came from promising sources too: marquee signing Bobby Reid, the ever-improving Joe Ralls, recently re-signed Junior Hoilett, not to mention Gary Madine’s first two Cardiff goals. Danny Ward then added a sixth in the second half on his injury return.

Gary Madine netted twice on a comfortable evening for the Bluebirds

If it was straightforward when the Bluebirds beat Tavistock – nine divisions lower than the Premier League new boys – 7-2 on this ground a year ago, then it looked even easier for Warnock’s side this time.

Cardiff led inside 60 seconds. Josh Murphy raced down the left flank before the ball ended at Hoilett’s feet – and the Canadian couldn’t miss from two yards out. Tavistock were keen do what they didn’t last year – and settle on the ball – but a classic piece of Ralls midfield play soon doubled the Cardiff advantage. Ralls scrapped for the ball in the centre and released Hoilett, the Englishman finishing the move himself when he latched onto Hoilett’s reverse cross with his head and scored on the rebound.

It was 2-0 inside nine minutes and already double-figure predictions were being made.

But the Lambs were eager to hold firm; which they did until a triple salvo from the Bluebirds killed the game off inside half an hour.

First, Madine struck a 25-yard pile driver into the corner to mark his first Cardiff goal – albeit in a non-competitive game – in true style.

Then Reid notched his first Bluebirds strike too, driving low into the corner to cap a lightning visitors’ attack.

And it was Madine at the double on 29 minutes with a deflected effort that made it 5-0.Everyone was getting their goals, stretching their legs, ensuring their confidence was up… the only man (in a blue shirt) who emerged frustrated from the first 45 minutes was Murphy, who missed a string of chances to score the sixth.

Joe Ralls was typically impressive for the visitors

Tavistock belatedly showed that fighting spirit they were keen to display and dug deep until the break.

The Lambs did the same in the short period after half-time, keen to avoid a complete slaughter.

Yet after a number of changes from Warnock on the hour mark, it was Ward who stretched the visitors’ lead, before Cardiff toyed with their hosts.

They could have score more than six on another day, but this was about finding form, fitness and familiarity.

Cardiff City team (first 60 minutes): Etheridge; Peltier, Morrison, Manga, Cunningham; Ralls, Paterson; Hoilett, Reid, J. Murphy; Madine. Cardiff City team (after 60 minutes): Etheridge; Richards, Connolly, Manga, Bennett; Ralls, Damour, Paterson; K.Harris, Mendez-Laing, Ward

Goals: Hoilett (1), Ralls (9), Madine (23, 29), Reid (26), Ward (69)

Hoilett was excellent as usual and Reid already looks sharp also Harris played well and I believe he still has a role here despite many on here writting him of. Think their number 3 will be at a league club soon enough looked young and seems a very good player IMO.

two midfielders with Reid playing a forward roll by the looks of it, also using ward as a striker.

Taking England's lead, as we scored 6 goals we'll win the premier league right?

Always gong to be an easy game Tavistoke play at a very low level a couple can’t get into my sons uni team If I am honest I was not impressed at City in the game but I suppose they were half paced The only one who impressed me was Reid The defence had nothing to do
