BLUEBIRDS UP THERE: 2018/19 PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB KITS RATED

Every new Premier League kit ranked as Manchester United fail where Cardiff City and Liverpool succeed
By Tom Coleman

The new Premier League kits for the 2018/19 season are pretty much all here

The new Premier League season is nearly upon us and you know what that means... new kits!

There's been no word yet on Brighton's design for the new season, but all of the top flight's other teams have either confirmed their shirts for the next campaign or have otherwise had designs leaked.

There are some dazzling efforts here and some so horrible that they'll leave you shaking with rage.

From worst to best, here's how they rate (currently not including Brighton & Hove Albion):

19. Manchester United

Oh dear. There are some good intentions behind this, with the 'train track graphic' aiming to pay tribute to the original Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club that preceded the Manchester United we all know today. It doesn't work at all though, and instead makes the shirt look like it's emerging out of a giant black slinky. A total mess and one of the ugliest United kits we've seen for some time.

18. Tottenham Hotspur

Now. We must stress that this is only a leaked image. And again, you'd really hope this is some sort of wind-up if you are a Spurs fan. Nike have really dropped a clanger here. The faded navy blue at the bottom doesn't work at all and stops this design from being anything other than awful. The only reason it isn't bottom is that we quite like the co-ordinates of the new stadium on the back of the neck. That's it.

17. Chelsea

We get what they were trying to do with this as the design is clearly a hark back to the designs of the mid-80s, which featured red and white pinstripes. However, this looks like someone's snorted said pinstripes and then sneezed all over it. Dreadful.

16. Arsenal

It's more or less as you were, but we simply cannot get our heads around the ridiculous armbands. There also appears to be some unnecessarily silly detailing on the front. To be frank, it's a real messed up effort and our Aaron deserves better. Much better.

15. Burnley

There's just too much going on here. The faded arrow in the background on the front and the sponsor logo simply don't fit at all and take away from what's otherwise a solid kit.

14. Crystal Palace

Not a bad effort, all things considered, but we don't quite understand why Puma, who have taken over from Macron, are so into this whole faded stripes thing. The yellow looks a little garish too.

13. Bournemouth

This is quite a smart effort, and we love the Umbro stacked diamond logo on the sleeve trim. However, there's otherwise not an awful lot to get excited about here. A decent shirt all the same.

12. Manchester City

Not too sure on the sleeves with this one. They kind of look like they've been coloured in by a six-year-old. That said, it's far superior to comparable designs we've seen from France and England in recent years, but we're still not sure it really works.

11. Newcastle United

After changing their crest last season to mark their 125th anniversary, the regular badge returns for the new season. Unlike previous designs, Puma has decided against messing around with the stripes and have kept it simple, creating a clean and pretty stylish number.

10. West Ham

Nothing much to take great issue with here. Reminds us a lot of the 2014 and 2015 efforts, with the blue sleeves shortened to a trim. The horizontal maroon stripes are also quite nice, but there's a real lack of a wow factor here.

9. Leicester City

Puma have made way for Adidas for this season's effort, and the end result is pretty decent. The button collar is replaced by a v-neck, while there's an intriguing diagonal blue line design that's wonderfully easy on the eye. Perhaps not their most memorable kit, but decent nonetheless.

8. Fulham

We really like this one. Clearly a strong tip of the hat to the kits seen during the late 90s - a time when the club's meteoric rise from the fourth tier to the top flight was in full swing. It's a simple, crisp design that is a vast improvement on last year's effort and we reckon Cottagers fans will love it.

7. Southampton

Again, this kit is very close to being a stonker. Framing the red and white stripes, which make a welcome return this season, with a black trim is a real stroke of genius, although we're not sure it works on the collar and sleeves. Seems a step too far. Then again, if we were Southampton fans we'd definitely be snapping one up.

6. Cardiff City

Probably their nicest kit for a number of years. The faded stripes, the return of the Adidas stripes to the sleeves (where they belong) and, last but not least, the wonderful Bluebird logo on the back of the neck. Simple, stylish and Premier League class[/i].

[b]5. Everton

This is agonisingly close to being a great kit. Umbro took 15 months consulting with fans before coming up with this design, which features a lovely melange fabric (we don't know what that means but it looks class) and a classic two-button collar. The Umbro diamonds round the sleeves add a nice retro touch too, but the kit is ultimately denied a higher rating by the quite frankly ridiculous Angry Birds logo.

4. Huddersfield Town

Now this is smart. Really smart. It's ultimately a very simple design, with the blue and white stripes featured on the back and front, but there are some details here that we love, particularly the traditional terrier, which is back after 50 years, and the 'HTAFC 1908' feature on the back of the neck. Good stuff here.

3. Liverpool

Really not that different to last season's but there are some subtle improvements. New Balance have added an old school collar, and different coloured red stripes to liven it up. Many will feel it's too similar to last season's but it's a really nice shirt all the same.

2. Wolves

This is the first Wolves kit to be made by Adidas and it's a corker. There's a departure from the deeper orangey-type shirts of recent years in favour of a brighter and more traditional amber. The black trim frames it all together nicely, but there's something bothering us about the sponsor, it just doesn't fit that well. Otherwise, a first class effort.

1. Watford

Wow. This is a truly stunning kit. To our knowledge this is the first time the Hornets have had full-on black and yellow vertical stripes. It might upset traditionalists, but sometimes a radical change of approach pays off. Elton must be buzzing (pun fully intended).
