Rhys Healey leads fightback as Bluebirds recover from two-goal deficit

Cardiff City’s Under-23s came from behind to beat a stubborn St Austell side 4-2 at Poltair Park.

Rhys Healey continued his goal-scoring form – after netting a brace at Taffs Well – with another two goals as a young visiting side battled back from 2-0 down.

The Bluebirds named a fairly strong side, despite the inclusion of three trialists, but were stunned when Liam Eddy’s early strike left them trailing 1-0 inside three minutes.

Ciaron Brown had been caught flat-footed and Eddy’s finish from an acute angle left Brian Murphy stranded.

Cardiff were understandably keen to find the feet of playmaker Lee Tomlin whenever they could.

But despite some attractive build-up play they struggled to break through the St Austell defence after that early concession.

In fact, it was the hosts who doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark.

Trialist Dan Martin was penalised for a trip in the box and Mark Goldsworthy converted the penalty with an emphatic finish.

It was looking like an incredibly frustrating evening for Jarred Harvey and Andy Legg, the Under-23 coaches, until two goals in the final minute of the first half changed the complexion of the clash.

First, Healey volley home from 25 yards to cap a flowing move that involved both Tomlin and Anthony Pilkington.

Then Healey broke again, this time down the right flank, and squared a tantalising ball which Will Tinsley – who scored in the 2-2 draw between these sides 12 months ago – could only steer into his own net.

Cardiff went into the interval with one emotion: relief.

St Austell had given them a scare in the first 45 minutes.

But the Bluebirds, in particular, Healey grew in confidence after the break.

The young striker made it four goals in two matches with a delicate and audacious lob over the goalkeeper to make it 3-2 on 49 minutes.

He was whiskers away from completing a hat-trick before making way in a host of substitutions after the break.

Jamie Veale sealed the win late on, capping an intricate passing move to slot home and uphold the Bluebirds’ winning record on this pre-season tour of Devon and Cornwall.

Healey and Waite the two that stood out for me. Waite is like a little pit bull in the centre midfield seems to scrap and win everything and be everywhere. Tomlin was a class above in the first half he played but once again you’d expect that of him against these opposition.
