Cardiff City handed second transfer blow in 72 hours but Derby County star Tom Huddlestone now linked

Neil Warnock has reportedly identified another potential option after missing out on two targets in 72 hours

Cardiff City have been handed their second transfer blow in just 72 hours, with midfielder Alfred N'Diaye now poised to join Spanish side Malaga.

It comes after boss Neil Warnock effectively conceded defeat in his chase for Liverpool's Marko Grujic over the weekend, with the Yorkshireman admitting the pursuit of the Serb had proved costly to exploring other options.

He told the BBC ahead of Saturday's friendly with Real Betis: "I have missed out on a couple of targets waiting for him. It is disappointing as everything was agreed with Liverpool - but sometimes fate intervenes.

"We need a couple of midfielders and a striker. We are really short in midfield."

One of those targets was N'Diaye, who was earmarked as potential option just last week.

Warnock admitted over the weekend that the package needed to capture the Senegalese international was "probably beyond" the club, despite him being initially identified as a credible alternative to the Liverpool man.

What you can expect to happen this week

And it appears that any hope of signing the 28-year-old, who spent the season on loan at Wolves, has now evaporated, with the player touching down in Spain late last night to complete a medical ahead of a proposed season-long loan.

It means Warnock now faces a race against time to get the midfield reinforcements he so craves, with the transfer window closing at 5pm on Thursday, but he's already hinted that there could be a back-up plan in place.

mmmmmmmm, this is a very strange window for us! After the start we had getting in some good signing, I'm finding it very difficult to understand where the club is going with this? I completely understand the need to not make the mistakes we made the last time, but to get to this stage knowing how short of a couple of midfielders and a striker we are, and seemingly running out of time, I don't understand the logic?

The likes of McGinn and Woods are still available and both available for about 10 mill combined, and good value I think? Why has this not been done already? That leaves a striker....the plot thickens eh? I don't think we are going to get anyone....what do you guys think?

Wouldn't mind Mohammed Besic from Everton he's not wanted there and every time I've seen him he's looked decent

It looks like it's come back Greg Halford, all is forgiven.

We need back up in the centre midfield badly and I don't think Besic would be bad back up and Warnock gets alot of unfancied players firing with his man management
