'A palpable naivety and bluntness in attack came back to haunt them' - National media verdict on Cardiff City's opener at Bournemouth -

Sun 12th August 2018

Here's what the national media made of the Bluebirds' league opener.

Kieran Gill - Mail Online

This should have been more comfortable than it was. Pocket-rocket Ryan Fraser gave Bournemouth a first-half lead but Callum Wilson's poor penalty made for a tense finish.

This was Cardiff's first taste of the Premier League in four years and they were welcomed back by crunching tackles at the Vitality Stadium, prompting several protests from Warnock.

Cardiff did not spend like Wolves and Fulham this summer and they know these are games they should be giving themselves a chance in.

Tom Prentki - Telegraph

Bournemouth of 2018 have bought into the inflated prices of the English elite, paying £25 million for Colombia midfielder Jefferson Lerma.

Cardiff’s spending has been more modest, with owner Vincent Tan wary of the club’s last Premier League experience four years ago, when they finished bottom.

On this showing, Tan might regret not bolstering the front line because, for all their tenacity and hard work, Neil Warnock’s side looked desperately short in the creative department.

Debutant Bobby Reid made the best of what little service he received whilst fellow arrival Josh Murphy showed promise after coming on as a substitute but chances were at a premium.

The manner in which the visitors conceded the opener will have been particularly galling for Warnock as his players retreated to allow Josh King to find Wilson and he in turn squared to give Fraser a simple finish.

Then Bruno Manga caught Wilson with the faintest of touches and Kevin Friend pointed to the spot. Warnock’s brow furrowed as he contemplated half-time but Wilson’s penalty lacked conviction and Neil Etheridge saved it low to his left.

Cardiff were far from being overawed but still were unable to mount a serious threat to Asmir Begovic’s goal.

Bournemouth remained in control and sealed victory as Wilson swept the ball into the net in the dying moments from Simon Francis’s low cross to give them the perfect start.

Ben Fisher - Guardian

Warnock said his squad were still pinching themselves following promotion. A palpable naivety and a bluntness in attack, as the Cardiff manager had feared, ultimately came back to bite them.

Once Bournemouth got into their stride they were difficult to stop. Wilson bamboozled Sol Bamba before jinking inside and firing wide and then Joshua King nutmegged Joe Bennett to make a surge into the box.

Cardiff did not heed the warnings, though; Wilson faced up Bruno Manga before sliding the ball across to Fraser, who arrived late to tuck it home.

Cardiff never caved in, and could count themselves unlucky when Hoilett tricked his way past Dan Gosling without winning a foul late on.

Reid, too, was cruelly pulled up for a challenge on Fraser. But just as the fourth official had indicated five minutes of stoppage time, Simon Francis teed up Wilson to roll home and seal a near-perfect start.

Ian Winrow - Independent

Tipped by many as favourites to go down, Neil Warnock’s Cardiff side experienced a harsh introduction to life in the top-flight, receiving an early reminder of the scale of the task that lies ahead if they are to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Howe’s side deserved the lead and should have doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Wilson went down under a challenge from Ecuele Manga as he surged forward.

However, Wilson failed to take advantage, striking his penalty tamely to Etheridge’s left although the keeper did well to reach the ball with a full length dive.

Cardiff had rarely looked capable of punishing Bournemouth for that miss during the first half.

The second half brought an improvement with the visitors showing more purpose and Murphy, introduced from the bench, in particular causing problems while centre-back Sean Morrison was denied by an excellent Asmir Begovic.

Less impressive was their defensive work and Wilson wrapped up the win in the first minute of added time when he turned home from ten yards after good work from Simon Francis.

This is one;y to be expected but the fact is that City were short in numbers yesterday and (to me at least) it seems clear that the starting XI for the Newcastle game will see a number (at least three) changes...

Zohore (if fit), Camarasa, Arter to replace Paterson, Manga and Mendez-Laing; allowing Bamba reverting to his natural position in the back four

Hopefully see a more aware City side at the CCS in front of what is sure to be a bumper crowd :thumbright: :ayatollah:
