MY VIEW:NEIL ETHERIDGE SAVED CARDIFF V 10 MEN NEWCASTLE

Sat Aug 18, 2018 1:31 pm

My View/Opinion

CARDIFF BATTLED ONCE AGAIN,AGAINST A 10 MAN NEWCASTLE, BUT FAILED BADLY IN FRONT OF GOAL & FOR ME THATS TWO POINTS DROPPED.

A fair result over all.

For me both sides cancelled each other out.

But City 2 games running not a shot on target.

PENALTY SAVE BY NEIL ETHERIDGE IN THE LAST MINUTE :ayatollah:

With Cardiff City the bookies favourite to go straight back down & Newcastle United also looking like a relegation club, neither side could afford to lose this game & with Cardiff not beaten Newcastle in a league game since 25th February 1981, this was more than just a Premier League game, in many fans eyes it was a must win game for Cardiff City.

The Cardiff City team came out to 30,000 plus fans :bluebird: :bluebird:

The first 25mins was a very even match with both clubs creating a few chances each :bluebird:

CARDIFF CITY 0 NEWCASTLE 0
H/T 0-0
Crowd 30,520
Away 2,050

Cardiff City: Etheridge; Manga, Morrison, Bamba, Bennett; Camarasa, Arter, Ralls; Murphy, Hoilett, Zohore.

Cardiff subs
Smithies, Richards, Cunningham, Paterson, Reid, Mendez-Laing, Madine.

Even stevens for the first 25mins.

Newcastle got away with quite a few worse than dirty fouls.

Over all a fair first half from both clubs , the final finish missing from both sides .

H/T 0-0

By the 50th min Cardiff had not had a single shot on target despite sone good build ups.

Finally a Newcastle player gets set off 64th min Isaac Hayden.

Cardiff made a change as Bobby Reid replaced Victor Camarasa.

Mendez- Laing replaced Joe Bennett.

Josh Murphy’s brother Jacob replaced Matt Ritchie in Newcastle’s final sub.

82mins Patterson replaced an injured Junior Hoilett.

Both sides cancelled each other out.

There was 6 mins injury time.

F/T 0-0

MY MAN OF THE MATCH HARRY ARTER :bluebird: :bluebird:

It’s great to have a point to get us going, but we need to beat clubs like Newcastle at home, just my view :bluebird:

Thing is, Annis, whilst we could and should have won this game, Newcastle finished 10th in this league last year. I don’t think we can be saying “we need to beat clubs like Newcastle at home.” I don’t disagree that those games are there for the taking, but I do fear that there will start to be elements of our fanbase that will start turning on our team if we suddenly start going into games assuming we should be beating Top 10 clubs before a ball has been kicked.

Ultimately, we were toothless today. We had everything except for set piece delivery, and finishing. I thought we absolutely dominated, until Warnock waited too long to make his changes, allowing Newcastle the opportunity to take advantage of our trying to settle into our new shape. Warnock has only one weakness, in my opinion, and that’s making substitutions at poor times and generally waiting too long to make them - I honestly feel we would have won this if he’d made the changes 10 minutes earlier, but hey ho.

The positives for me were our midfield, absolutely. Arter looked incredible in this team, and worked like a Bryson but with far more quality to his touch. I thought Camarasa showed that he will be instrumental once he’s up to speed on British football, and Murphy was a MOTM candidate. Those guys have had 1 week together - I think after some more time, they will be superb as a unit.

No one looked out of their depth, and we once again showed that all this talk about us being a long ball team is bull. As is the talk that we are a dirty side who don’t belong at this level - Newcastle were filthy today, and I don’t doubt they’ll be the only ones I say that about this season.

I do agree that this was 2 points lost, based on the performance, but if we could get 3 points at Huddersfield next week (which will be a tough game!), I think 4 points from our first three games won’t be a bad return (although I’d have liked 5!).

I hoped for 5 points in the first 3 games
If we can get 4 by beating huddersfield that wont be a bad return.
We really need to beat teams like Newcastle at home though especially with them down to 10 men for the last 20 mins
Huddersfield has now pretty much turned into a must win

I thought it was a very encouraging performance by our boys.. Midfield looks much better with the 2 new signings. Zahore was very poor though. We may regret no signing a quality striker.. Josh Murphy was excellent..

Nobody is turning on the team or manager but when as supporters we spot errors then that is a subject for debate. Annis is absolutely right on the evidence I saw today Newcastle are crap and reduced to 10 men we should have beaten them easily.

However, with the late penalty save we can mark this up as a point gained but I'm sure NW will be looking at this side and how to inject more goals into it.

I agree we need to shoot more..

Alot of people pointing fingers at zohore. We could have Bale if he doesnt have support or service he is not going to score.

We have not got the players to play 4 3 3 effectively going forward.

Need to have 2 up front at home from the off.. Reid and zorhre maybe.

We're just a avarage team, were next playing a half decent Huddersfield team who last season were dcent at home and got some good results, no shots on target in 2 games, didn't score a tremendous amount of goals last season. We need a decent striker but with the window now closed I don't hold out much hope of getting one. If we stay up it would be just as big achievement as last season. Fingers crossed Reid gets on the score sheet a few times and zohore manages to hit the net in the next few games along with arter, ok in midfield shocking up front.

Lots of positives today.
Ten fold improvement with Arter and Camarasa in midfield.
Midfield were on the front foot for long periods.
Lessons learned when we changed it, 10 men got on top.
Ken needs shooting practice before next week:-)

Does a header count as a 'shot on target?'

Re: MY VIEW:NEIL ETHERIDGE SAVED CARDIFF V 10 MEN NEWCASTLE

I'm afraid that there is no point in relying on Zohore to get many goals. As I have said before, he has plenty of strengths to his game, but heading the ball and scoring goals are not his strengths.

I thought we would get 2 to 3 points from our opening 5 games. A win at Huddersfield would be a nice bonus, but I can't see us getting any more than a draw from there.

At least we are off the mark, and hopefully getting that first point on the board will give our players the confidence to push on from here. I thought the overall performance was not too bad at all.

I enjoyed the game even if it lacked a bit of quality, thought we were the better team overall and maybe two points dropped but we were all happy for a point in the end :)
I was a bit disappointed with our set pieces if I’m honest.

This is a pretty good post and I can’t disagree with any of it.
We can’t say we should beat teams like this before the start - big club and a top ten finish last season and manager who’s won the champions league. I will say it was almost like 2 points drooped in the end though and you’re right, we all know there will be an element moaning and turning against certain players and even Warnock if it doesn’t go well. That’s a given.

Like you say the midfield was great today and surprised most of our fans I think with some of our patterns of play. Yes, toothless up front but the service and crossing was mainly poor.

Very important to get our first point so roll on Huddersfield for another one or three hopefully.

Definitely the set pieces were poor.
I was hoping that Victor would be a free kick specialist on the quiet! Another Whitts!! ... but unfortunately doesn’t look like.

Probably is right as headers are not classed as shots within the game! It was on target and going in until defender got in way, whilst didn't have shot on target we did have several good opportunities to score and should have , what did show up was our slowness with the Ball but hopefully given time players will adjust to speed of premiership and it will see us get more opportunities.

Got lucky???? :? :o

I thought we deserved the win today and whilst it could have all been undone by the (valid) penalty, the outstanding Neil Etheridge came to the rescue for the second time in two games!

City had the clearer chances and I was boosted by the City performance and by the quality of the three new players in the team (Arter, Cameras and Murphy)

City far from "lucky" on this occasion, as their overall performance deserved at least what they got! :ayatollah:

Would have taken a draw before a ball was kicked but thought we out played them. Arter was excellent. Lovely simple touches and loads of movement. MOTM for me. By second half felt it was a game where we could take 3 points - final minute relieved with point again. Ah the joys!!!! Anyway we gave them a game and didn’t look outclassed.

We knew back three months ago unless we invested in a Premier League Striker we would struggle badly for goals and weve now played two of the weaker Premier League clubs.

Early days, but we all know we will just have to fight and prey for a few good results to come our way, but we will need much more than that to stay up, let’s enjoy the ride :bluebird: :ayatollah:

Was fair result they had couple one on ones with goalie plus pen so cannot complain, think people need to remember premiership is faster than championship and on many occasions city got cought out but given time players get use to it? To say should be beating teams like them at home is not fair same as last week saying should be getting a point away, at moment we are not good enough to definitively say should get a result at any game but given time think we can do so :old:

A few weeks ago people were saying that we were hoof ball merchants playing anti football but would trouble teams with our set pieces but today I thought we passed the ball around so well and showed some great touches. Unfortunately our set pieces let us down. It will soon gel and I really think we will surprise a lot of people. They will still be anti Cardiff though

Re: MY VIEW:NEIL ETHERIDGE SAVED CARDIFF V 10 MEN NEWCASTLE

Just got back.

Really encouraged by the midfield three. For a long time that’s the area we’ve lacked quality. Ralls, Camarasa and Arter were all great and seem to have a good understanding. Arter MOTM for me.

I thought Murphy did well as well but just seemed to lack the final ball on a couple of occasions - particularly the set pieces he took. To be fair, at other times his crosses were good and better movement/finishing from Zohore would have seen a goal.

Our set pieces weren’t at the usual standard, but that will be different in the future. We battled hard for a very good point against a team who finished in the top half last season.

Feeling positive after that performance.
