Cardiff City's on loan midfielder Harry Arter was allegedly subject to a foul-mouthed rant from Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane this summer.

The former Manchester United star is said to have called the 28-year-old a p***k and a w****r, as well as saying he wouldn't have selected him if he was in charge.

The Bluebirds midfielder did not join up with the Irish squad for the latest international break, missing the 4-1 defeat to Wales at Cardiff City Stadium last Thursday.

Arter apparently reacted very calmly, but team-mate Jonathan Walters became embroiled in a heated discussion with Keane. Ireland boss Martin O'Neill was not present during the alleged discussions.

The Sunday World reported the incident happened after FAI medical officials told Arter to sit out of a training session as a precaution for an injury during the summer internationals — which angered Keane.

One source said "Keane went for it. He called Arter every name under the sun, but we should not be surprised by that and it is not the first time they have clashed in recent years.

“Arter didn’t say much and just went back into his room and a few players went in with him, but no one who witnessed that was surprised when he said he would not be coming back."

Arter took part in both games against France and the United States back in May and June, coming on as a substitute.

Manager O'Neill did confirm that a discussion had taken place but said Arter was instead focusing on his club career, after making a deadline day move to Cardiff.

The former Celtic manager didn't close the door on Arter's international career, instead backing up his point about his club career.
