What's the latest injury news?

Cardiff City look set to be without Lee Peltier for the next 2-3 months, after the full-back suffered a dislocated shoulder in the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend, but there are otherwise no fresh injury concerns for Neil Warnock.

Aron Gunnarsson has returned to training this week, but Sunday's game looks to have come too soon for him to be in any kind of contention. Long-term absentee Nathaniel Mendez-Laing remains sidelined with a ligament injury.

Meanwhile, Burnley are without Robbie Brady, who's due to appear for the under-23s as he continues his bid to return to full fitness, while Ben Gibson (hernia) and Nick Pope (shoulder) are both ruled out.

NEIL WARNOCK:

28/09/18

INJURIES:

"Peltier’s not got to have an operation which is the good news but it’s still going to be between two and three months. Obviously it came out of the joint and they managed to put it back in without operating and the surgeon thinks he doesn’t need a plate and he’s got more of a chance of healing naturally."

"He’s in good spirits as is Mendez who’s got the brace off. Gunnarsson is training this week but I don’t think he’ll be anywhere near fit for Sunday but he has trained and he’s looked well. He’s shown us what we’ve missed over the last few weeks. There are one or two little niggles but that’s all."

Gunnarsson

NEIL WARNOCK:

"Yeah it’s been to build it back up again."

" He’s had a couple of little knocks now. We thought he’d be okay for the Chelsea game but he had another knock in training and sod’s law it’s in the same place so we’ve had to take him back a little bit."

"We’re crossing our fingers that this time it’ll be okay."

Lee Peltier / Aron Gunnarsson & Mendez-Laing are all out injured.

About Burnley

Burnley Football Club is a professional association football club based in Burnley, Lancashire, England. Founded on 18 May 1882, the team originally played only friendly matches until they entered the FA Cup for the first time in 1885–86. The club currently plays in the Premier League, the first tier of English football. Nicknamed the Clarets, due to the dominant colour of their home shirts, they were one of the twelve founding members of the Football League in 1888.

Burnley have been champions of England twice, in 1920–21 and 1959–60, have won the FA Cup once, in 1914, and have won the Community Shield twice, in 1960 and 1973. The Clarets also reached the 1961 quarter-finals of the European Cup. They are one of only five teams to have won all top four professional divisions of English football, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Preston North End, Sheffield United and Portsmouth.

In the 1920–21 campaign, Burnley were crowned champions of England for the first time when they won the First Division. During that season the team embarked on a 30-match unbeaten run, which remained an English record until it was beaten by Nottingham Forest in the late 1970s. Burnley attained a second league championship in 1959–60 with a team consisting of mostly youth academy graduates, winning the title with a last-day victory over Manchester City, after foundations were laid by pioneers Alan Brown, Bob Lord and Harry Potts.

Just twenty years later, in 1979–80, Burnley were relegated to the Third Division — the first time in their history they had played in the third tier of English football. Five years later, the team competed in the Fourth Division for the first time following another relegation, and on 9 May 1987 only a 2–1 home win against Orient saved Burnley from relegation to the Football Conference and a possible dissolution. Burnley won promotion in 1991–92 to the third tier and again in 1999–2000 to the second tier, before being promoted to the Premier League in 2008–09, 2013–14 and 2015–16.

Burnley have played home games at Turf Moor since 17 February 1883, after the club had moved from their original premises at Calder Vale. The club colours of claret and blue were adopted prior to the 1910–11 season in tribute to the dominant club of English football at the time, Aston Villa. Their current manager, Sean Dyche, was appointed on 30 October 2012.

Previous Meeting

We last played Burnley in a Championship fixture in April 2016 at Turf Moor. It finished in a 0-0 draw.

Looks like Burnley are coming back to form. Won't be easy against a side that finished 7th last season. I think this one may be a score draw.

It's been a difficult few days for Cardiff City.

The 5-0 defeat at home to Manchester City will have been even more sobering for boss Neil Warnock than the defeat at Chelsea the week before, and there's certainly plenty to ponder ahead of what is now a massive game at home to Burnley.

One pressing issue will be the condition of Lee Peltier, who suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder during the defeat to the defending Premier League champions.

It's just the latest injury concern for the Bluebirds, with Aron Gunnarsson, Josh Murphy and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing already taking up space in the treatment room.

There could well be some news on all three over the next few days.

This is a huge game. We desperately need to add more points and a win would be the ultimate outcome on Sunday. Even if we get a draw atleast it’ll be another point on the board but with spurs away the following Saturday we could really do with al 3.
It’s these types of games that the players need everyone’s support behind them because it’s much more of an opportunity than Man City or Chelsea for example. That said, I don’t think the game will be easy at all as Burnley will also be seeing this as a must win game and to take maximum points.

We need everyone back again for this match that was at the big games or as many as possible. I do not want to look up and see lots of red seats please :) :bluescarf: :bluebird: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

Just remember if we actually manage to stay up this season, it will be Warnock greatest achievement considering the money spent etc. Just like it was a massive achievement that he got us up here in the first place - nothing short of genius to be honest with you. Don’t forget that!

I can only see a loss sorry but it will be so important to not let them get an early goal otherwise heads will just drop. I think we missed Bambas leadership and getting players going, Morrison just seemed bewildered at times. Camarassa was getting really frustrated and see a bit of bitching going on.

Hate to say it but 2-1 Burnley :banghead:

Burnley head-to-head

It’s been two-and-a-half years since the Bluebirds faced Burnley.

But the Bluebirds have a very impressive record against the Clarets.

Cardiff are unbeaten in their last 13 meetings with Burnley in all competitions, a run that stretches back to April 2007 :bluebird: :bluebird:

Victory for Cardiff against Burnley would almost certainly lift Neil Warnock's men out of the bottom three, for a week at the very least anyway.

And given that every side from Everton below have failed to win more than one of their opening six games, it's already shaping up to be tight at the bottom.

So the way things are going, keeping in touch is seemingly all that matters because it's increasingly looking like around half of the sides in the Premier League could realistically have relegation concerns come the business end of the season.

So all is far from lost for Cardiff. A positive run here and there could be all it takes.

Cunningham on Burnley clash

“You go into every game and try your best."

“And we’ll look at certain aspects of the game early next week to look towards Burnley, which will be a massive game."

“[Burnley] have had a slow start by their standards but won today, so it’s going to be a big one. We’ve got to start getting wins on the board to make CCS a fortress."

“We need to win against the teams around us and do as well as we can. We’ve just had three very tough games against teams that will be fighting for the title. Now, it’s a huge game next week to try and get a positive result.”

BURNLEY SUPPORTERSS

Wednesday 26th September 2018

GW7 Ones to watch: Sean Morrison

Sean Morrison, Cardiff City

Cardiff City defender's impact at both ends of the pitch can produce points against Burnley

The Scout is tipping five players to produce big points in Gameweek 7 of Fantasy Premier League.

Sean Morrison (£4.9m)

Cardiff City may not have started the season as strongly as they would have liked but they do possess a centre-half who is making an impact in both defence and attack.

Morrison helped his side to clean sheets against Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town over Gameweeks 2 to 3.

He followed that up with back-to-back assists against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Major threat

The 27-year-old boasted a fine record in last season's Championship.

He scored seven goals and recorded a total of 50 shots on goal.

Although he has yet to score this term, Morrison has carried a major threat for the Bluebirds.

Chance creator

No Cardiff player has bettered his totals of seven chances created and two big chances.

A big chance is a situation where the player receiving the pass is expected to score.

Morrison's aerial threat can be decisive against visitors Burnley this Sunday.

He has won 37 headed duels this season, more than any other defender.

Claret concessions

His visitors have conceded 11 headed shots away from home, second only to Newcastle United's 12.

The Clarets have also struggled for a cutting edge on their travels, scoring only two goals in three matches.

Those factors point to a big haul for Morrison as Neil Warnock's side seek their first win of the campaign.

Burnley handed injury boost

Wednesday 26th September 2018

It was a miserable night last night for Burnley who were beaten 2-1 by Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup.

But they were handed a major boost as Belgian Steven Defour made his long-awaited return from injury.

He’s set to be in contention to feature against Cardiff at the weekend.

Speaking to the Clarets’ official website, Defour said he’s desperate for a run of games to get back to full fitness.

“I enjoyed today, not the result, but I enjoyed playing with the lads again and I hope it can continue like this,” said Defour, who played for 74 minutes after returning to fitness following knee and calf injuries.
“It was a great feeling to be back on the pitch in a competitive game.
“It felt really good. I have waited so long for it. It’s been a really frustrating few months to get back.”
Steven Defour

The man in the middle

Yesterday, the Premier League confirmed Martin Atkinson will be the referee for the Bluebirds’ clash with Burnley on Sunday.

Atkinson hasn’t refereed either side yet so far this season.

He last oversaw a Cardiff game when they were in the Premier League in the 2013/14 season, although the Bluebirds were beaten 3-0 by Newcastle.

The last time Atkinson was the man in the middle for a Cardiff home game, the Bluebirds beat Fulham 3-1 thanks to a Steven Caulker brace along with an own goal from Sascha Riether.

Burnley have never won a Premier League away game against a promoted side before, losing five and drawing six of their 11 such games.

Cardiff are winless in seven games in all competitions so far this season. They’ve not failed to win any of their first eight in a single campaign since 1964-65.

Burnley forward Ashley Barnes’ two goals against Bournemouth in his last match took him ahead of Paul Scharner as the second highest Austrian goalscorer in Premier League history (22 goals, behind Marko Arnautovic on 36).

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has met Cardiff five times previously as a manager in league competition, with all five finishing as draws (twice with Watford, three times with Burnley).

Burnley heading for a sell out

Cardiff City have confirmed that this weekend’s clash with Burnley is close to a home sell out, with over 30,000 tickets already sold.

Some 800 fans are set to travel down from Lancashire, and there are believed to be less than 1,000 tickets left for home fans.

The club is urging fans to book now in order to avoid disappointment.

Burnley won't be bullied by Cardiff.

The Lancashire Telegraph's Burnley writer, Tyrone Marshall

Friday 28th September 2018

Saturday's encounter with Manchester City once again threw up the question of Cardiff's physical approach to the game, but Burnley are unlikely to be too phased by it all.

The Lancashire Telegraph's Burnley writer, Tyrone Marshall, says the Clarets will be more than capable in dealing with any physical challenges that may crop up and will stand up in the battle.

"Burnley have a reputation for physicality themselves," he explains. "When teams come to Turf Moor they always try to ensure they're involved in competitive games so I don't think Cardiff's approach - if they do go down that route - will be of any great surprise to them.

"I don't think there'll be any concerns over it and I don't think they'll be complaining about it either."

The value of a clean sheet

It's fair to say that until last week's 4-0 trouncing of Bournemouth, Burnley's start to this season was a subdued one dogged by silly defensive errors.

"They kept a clean sheet last week, but they're still showing signs of vulnerability this season," Marshall adds.

"The two goals that Burton scored in midweek were fairly sloppy, so there's a definite avenue there for Cardiff.

"The success of last season was built on clean sheets and they've not looked as solid defensively and they've not always looked a solid."

Cardiff's promotion was similarly built on a rock solid defence, with Warnock famously setting his side the target of 16 clean sheets as a way of securing a place in the play-offs. They managed 19.

However, Warnock believes the Bluebirds have done themselves no favours this season with defensive errors, lamenting "elementary mistakes" after the defeat to Manchester City.

"We've got to eliminate mistakes if we're to have any chance whatsoever," he said.

One suspects that the manager to solve this issue is the manager who will walk away with three points come Sunday evening.
