DERMOT GALLAGHER: IT WAS A STRAIGHT RED!

Dermot Gallagher: 'Joe Ralls put Ilkay Gundogan at risk of serious injury'
By Darren Plant, Reporter

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has said that Cardiff City's Joe Ralls 'seriously endangered' the welfare of Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan on Saturday afternoon.

Ralls was handed a yellow card for a studs-up tackle on the knee of Gundogan, although replays suggested that the Bluebirds player should have received a straight red.

Gallagher has acknowledged that the referee had made the wrong call, describing the challenge as "not a nice tackle".

"It did warrant a red card and there's no doubt about it, it's not a nice tackle. He's seriously endangering Gundogan's welfare," Gallagher told Sky Sports News.

"For whatever reason, Michael [Oliver] hasn't realised. Whether he is on top of it and hasn't got a view of how far he's come or the speed, I don't know.

"He'll look at it this week and look at the root cause and remedy. How did you arrive at this decision and how can we make sure that, if this decision happens again next week, it is dealt with better? It's not just for Michael, it's for everybody."

Man City eventually registered a 5-0 victory in South Wales.

I agree with him.

The first thing I thought was "he's off".

I saw a yellow card not a red from the ref.
Swings and roundabouts.
Some you get some you don't.

Of course it's a red.

Here we go again the media spin. "Lets see what bad things we can find about Cardiff to reinforce our predjudices about them." Ralls is nowhere near a dirty player. Yes it was mistimed and some refs may have given a red but perhaps the referee realising the conditions decided to use a bit of common sense. There were equally bad tackles throughout the country on the weekend that weren't punished with a red.

David Moyes on Sky thought it was ok...

Nothing whatsoever to do with any perceived media bias or prejudice- just Dermot Gallagher giving his opinion which he's paid to do each week.

Well let's be glad he wasn't the referee then! :occasion5: and this is why var is flawed dermott says red match ref says yellow, it's about opinions and var won't change that as we've seen in world cup. Ref clearly saw incident so can anyone explain why he didn't give red ? :old:

Glad others share my view. Late tackle, looked bad (especially in the super slow mos available to some). But not every ref/fan/player/commentator perceives it as a red.

Free kick yes. Yellow, probably. Red, maybe.

Hardly made any difference but we were lucky the one man's view that counted said it wasn't a red. End of. That's how the FA will see it. They certainly won't be investigating any wrong doing. Move on.

Never a red . No intent, no force.

Games would be finishing 8 v 8 if these challenges were refs.

It’s a yellow, and it’s pretty much the sort of tackle yellows were for.

Not even worth any further debate.

Totally agree. Ralls had every right to go for the ball and Gundogan got there just before him. It was nothing more than a slightly mistimed challenge which looked a lot worse than it was because the ball bounced up to shin height and Gundogan went down. Ralls did nothing more than stretch his leg out to go for the ball. There was no malice or follow through, but because it's us, there's the predictable overreaction.

We should be so lucky! But I know x refs and pundits are entitled to their opinions but all they do is undermine match official by basically saying he made a mistake when clearly our ref didn't as he actually saw the incident and his opinion it wasn't a red card. :old:
