But 2018 has a different feel about it.
Luka Modric has already taken the FIFA 'Men's Best' award and is odds-on favourites to add the Golden Ball to his name. He'll face stiff competition from the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Antoine Griezmann - not to mention Messi and Ronaldo.
