'This Cardiff City side are not dead and buried' - the national media reaction to Bluebirds' thrilling win over Fulham

Monday 22nd October 2018

Cardiff City secured their first win of the Premier League season against Fulham in a thriller at the Cardiff City Stadium .

After a bad start, going behind to Andre Schurrle's stunner, Neil Warnock's men rallied to claim a morale-boosting 4-2 victory over the Cottagers.

The win was a long time coming, with the Bluebirds now out of the relegation zone and having played a number of the big-hitters in the league already.

Here is what the national media wrote about the game.

THE TELEGRAPH

Neil Warnock’s Cardiff doubled their season’s tally of goals to secure their first Premier League victory in an end-to-end encounter which again exposed defensive frailties at Fulham, who have shipped 25 goals in just nine games.

It is a worrying balance sheet for the London club, owned by Khan, who spent £100 million-plus over the summer. Warnock, the battle-worn war dog, claims he was forced to make do and mend with his promoted squad. “Sometimes it’s a noose round your neck when you’ve got all that money, fortunately I don’t have that problem,” he joked afterwards.

The Jurassic Park theme tune was played after the full-time whistle in Wales, but unlike the dinosaurs, this fighting Cardiff are not dead and buried.

THE DAILY MAIL

Kadeem Harris of Cardiff City celebrates after scoring the fourth goal

It handed Neil Warnock's Cardiff their first win of the season. A confidence booster; proof that they will not give Derby County's 11-point record from 2007-08 a run for its money.

The spoils went to Cardiff, who scored four-plus goals in a top-flight game for the first time since September 1961.

As for Fulham, they spent £105million in the summer to accommodate their lavish style of play but left wondering whether it is time to go back to basics.

INDEPENDENT

Callum Paterson and Kadeem Harris scored second-half goals to earn Cardiff City their first victory of the season - lifting them off the bottom of the Premier League and above Fulham.

Their manager, Neil Warnock, had claimed beforehand he would not bet money on their top-flight survival but the peculiar motivating tactic paid off handsomely as the Bluebirds were worthy winners.

These teams had won only one game between them in 16 Premier League matches, but anyone predicting caution or a lack of adventure was quickly disproved.

Cardiff, especially, offered a vibrant opening period, particularly down their left flank where winger Josh Murphy suggested he was capable of giving Fulham’s Calum Chambers a difficult afternoon.

THE GUARDIAN

In the end it felt so predictable. Twenty four hours after Neil Warnock admitted he would not put any money on Cardiff staying up, his players responded by picking up their first victory of the season to climb out of the bottom three at the expense of a Fulham side in freefall.

There was a mixture of jubilation and relief in the loud cheers that greeted the final whistle as the home supporters celebrated their first top-flight win since April 2014, ending a run of five successive defeats and breathing fresh life into their season.

Cardiff, in fairness, deserve credit for exposing Fulham’s frailties. Josh Murphy, who scored their opener, was a constant threat on the left and Bobby Decordova-Reid, who registered his first goal for the club since joining from Bristol City for £10m in the summer, worked tirelessly as part of a three-prong attack.

Callum Paterson was the focal point of that forward line and the makeshift striker – he joined Cardiff as a right-back – used his physical presence to unsettle Fulham throughout. His crucial goal midway through the second half was a case in point.
