Here’s why a united Cardiff City may just have the edge over their Premier League relegation rivals

It’s been just as tough as expected for Cardiff City in the opening nine games of the Premier League season.

Written off from day one, the Bluebirds have battled critics as well as world-class opponents in their first season in the top-flight since 2013/14.

It’s been a tricky start, partly down to the unkind fixture list that welcomed the Bluebirds into the league, but even after that, they sit outside of the relegation zone.

And that’s thanks to that all-important first win of the season picked up against fellow promoted club Fulham on the weekend.

It took nine attempts, but Cardiff are off the mark and in some style. A 4-2 win in which Warnock’s men played some lovely football, even defying the critics and forcing the chief of those critics, Chris Sutton, to quickly backtrack on his previous comments.

It’s a win that has been a long time coming. It was becoming the story-line of Cardiff’s season, to play well but to come up short.

Against Tottenham, Arsenal and even Chelsea, Cardiff had played well only to lose. Against the ‘lesser teams’ it was no different, the Bluebirds had to settle for a point against Newcastle and Huddersfield early in the season.

However, on Saturday, they ensured they took no less than three points against the team they outrun to achieve promotion last season.

Against a team that would supposedly glide through the Premier league after spending around £110 million on incomings in the summer window.

Just how big a statement that could be for the Bluebirds, who were written off for doing the opposite, for failing to spend the money to bring themselves up to scratch with the standard of the Premier League.

A monumental confidence boost for the players who have been made to feel as though they are not good enough to bless the league from day one of pre-season.

Not that they will take any notice. If they were accustom to taking in what critics say, then they wouldn’t be in this position to begin with. This team was deemed not good enough for promotion last season, even after spending the majority of the campaign in the top two, it was Fulham who ‘deserved promotion’.

That was nonsense born out of the differing styles of the two teams and the gap in quality ‘on paper’. Just like the pre-season tips of Fulham walking the league and Cardiff being relegated with record-low points were nonsense.

The Bluebirds stars have also received a confidence boost from their fans, who have remained positive throughout this season. It’s almost bizarre to see such unwavering support, to hear fans singing relentlessly when 5-0 down, to continue their support of a manager after going eight without a win.

Such strong support, too. Even after those winless eight games, there was no reluctance, no reduction in volume of the songs sung in Neil Warnock’s name.

This is a fanbase determined to enjoy their season in the Premier League, and fixed on rewarding Neil Warnock and his men for their miracle achievement of promotion with support until the day they leave.

That’s not something you often see in this fickle sport and it’s not something you will have seen at Cardiff City in years gone by, either.

However, that’s where the club finds itself, in this wonderful situation that has to be treasured, particularly following the troubles of recent years. Neil Warnock has been relentless in crediting that support offered by fans so far this season. On Saturday he added: “you heard the crowd today, they were magnificent and they have been all season and I am pleased for them and the Chairman, who is here today.”

It’s still very possible that Cardiff suffer relegation this season, it’s still quite possible that they finish well behind Fulham and Wolves as predicted.

However, it’s clear that if it does happen, it will be with the Cardiff City stars falling to their knees through exhaustion having given everything, unlike the last time they were here.

This is a group of players desperate to prove people wrong, desperate to give everything to the cause. It’s blood, sweat and tears and that could be seen in the celebrations of Saturday’s goals.

The Bluebirds, from manager, to players, to fans are all giving everything they have to stay in the Premier League and if that’s not enough, so be it. However, they proved last season that it can be enough to defy the odds, and they are determined to show that it can be in the Premier League, despite all of the top tier’s riches.

The next 29 games will decide whether that’s enough for Cardiff and they have an awfully long way to go in their survival bid.

But even after just one win in nine games, the Bluebirds are relishing the challenge with their supporters firmly behind them, as if they’ve won all nine of those games. It’s a unique situation, but one that could just give them the edge as they seek to defy the odds again.

Great article. Sums it up perfectly.

And you can tell he's actually watched all our games not just going off other's opinions of us.
