Ashley Baker - another youngster we let go!!

Fri Nov 09, 2018 10:07 pm

Just watched the Sheffield derby and Bridgend born Ashley Baker played the full game.

Does anyone know why we decided to release him from our academy in January 2017, only for Sheffield Wednesday to pick him up the very same month? He's gone on play a few games for Sheffield Wednesday this season and become a Championship standard defender. He's only just turned 21 last month.

We are all concerned about the lack of talent coming through our academy, but when you see Regan O'Poole signing for Man Utd, Tom James getting a 500k bid from West Brom and now Ashley Baker breaking into the Sheffield Wednesday team; I'm really starting to worry about our youth coaches inability to spot the potential of some of our talented youngsters.

Nothing to suggest any of them are good enough for us.

They might not be good enough for us right now, but they are good enough to play for football league clubs with the potential to improve further. We will never bring any youngsters through into our first team if this continues. We should have seen the potential in Ashley Baker, kept him and then loaned him out. He’s got to be worth at least a few hundred grand now and we let him go for nothing. Even if Rhys Healey doesn’t quite make it for us, we can sell him for a decent fee. We could have done the same if we kept Regan Poole, Tom James and Ashley Baker.

Don't forget the countless others we've let go? Yes our academy set up is not the best but to suggest we let all talented youngsters go is obviously wrong or are you saying we let all talented players go and keep the crap, Can't have it both ways?
