Way different now malky had the money to spend and the premier league is 100x harder now

Makes you wonder whether we would have survived if malky had remained?

"Way different now malky had the money to spend and the premier league is 100x harder now."

Are you seriously saying that the PL is, "100x harder," this season than in 2013-14? Clearly it is not. In fact by PL standards there are some really poor teams this time around. Both Brighton and Burnley, teams that would hope to finish in mid-table, were distinctly limited when they played us.

On the second issue of Malky having more money to spend it is interesting to note the actual transfer business the two summers we were promoted.

Values according to Transfermarkt

Summer 2013
Mendel £11.7m
Caulker £8.24m
Cornelius £7.23m
Theophile-Catherine £2.25m
Odemwingie £2.61m
Brayford £1.57m
Moore £0.58m
Total: £34.18m

Summer 2018
Murphy £10.26m
Reid £10.22m
Cunningham £3.6m
Smithies £3.6m
Total: £27.68m

The difference was £6.5m or in other words this summer we spent 81% of the 2013 total.Incidentally, if you add the Madine transfer fee (£6m), a player clearly signed with an eye on promotion in the window before promotion, and the totals are similar.

Great post.
I’m convinced Malky would have kept us up if he had stayed. I watch a lot of premier football and in no way whatsoever can I see that it’s 100% better than when we were there last.

You're failing to take into account the inflation in player prices, how much would those players Malky bought be worth now

Interesting post & id have to agree caulker at the time came from Spurs and was a up and coming English international. In today's money your looking 15mil+. Medal you're looking at 20mil. I also believe the prem was a different animal then to now!

The top 6/7 now the gap is so huge you rarely see any of the lower teams getting anything against the Top 6! They play In their own league and they only drop points to other top 6 teams!

There is one horrible and clear differences and is shown from these stats: our defence has really let Warnock down this season! Countless lacks of concentration, Arsenal, Burnley and even Saturday you just can't defend like that and hope to stay up. Briton got 3 x 1-0 in a row. You need to be solid at this level.

Morrison has improved as the season has moved on but I'd give Bamba and Manga the opportunity until Jan and then a CB, Striker & RB would be top of my wish list in Jan :bluebird:

You can't compare the managers Malky had more backing and took full advantage of that we had a bigger and better squad and the opposition was also weaker ive never seen Liverpool play as well as they have this season Man City seem to get better every year same with others aswell as the fact the clingers on the past few seasons Stoke and Swansea got relegated meaning the league is improved by far we have looked better than the results given with a good striker we would be much better off but we miss alot of chances without that when we are on top

Re: Comparing us this time to last time in Premier league

Mon Nov 12, 2018 9:48 am

Cost of buying players and paying their wages is completely different now to then. Almost impossible to compare past teams to present teams. Lots more to take into consideration than just what was spent then compared to what was spent now.

Re: Comparing us this time to last time in Premier league

Mon Nov 12, 2018 10:10 am

Please let's not compare the transfer values of then and now :banghead: transfers prices have inflated massively in the time we were last in the prem.

Malky also spent to take us up so had the base of what we wanted.

I have no doubt the two seasons are totally incomparable. A weaker prem back then and we were able to spent more and get better value back then.

good pro Malky post.
lets add a Warnock signing from the previous season while ignoring Malky was well backed in comparison to other championship sides for his promotion while Warnock was not..
ignore the new TV deal which has increased transfer fees and wages by 50%
and ignore how the gulf has grown between the top and bottom of the prem { in games between top 5 and bottom 5 then the top teams won 76% of games its now 95%...the top teams are now averaging a goal a game more in these games while the bottom 5 are scoring 0.4 goals per game less. }.

personally I don't think its possible to compare due to the above, but if your going to at least try to be fair about it.

In my opinion the top 6 have moved on hugely. The rest are much of a muchness. Our spending this time compared to our spending last time is in my opinion irrelevant. More critical is our spending relative to the teams we're competing with. That must be considerably lower this time than last time. The bottom team in the league this year have spent 100 million plus. We'll never know whether Malky would have kept us up but I've always thought he would have. We had the easier set of home fixtures after he went and the record shows we pretty much blew the points in all those games. Warnock is doing a great job though particularly given his available budget.

C'mon steve, this is a classic example of how to bend stats to suit your point of view.Take Medel for instance, how old was he when he joined us?25/26?It's my view that you'd have to pay 20m to get a player of that calibre today,at least. He remains the best m/f I've seen in a city shirt.Theres been a quantum leap in player values since summer 2013.

With the money Malky spent we should have been the Wolves and gone up and stayed up easily.

Sadly he massively misspent.

Warnock hasn’t had that luxury. The situations were incomparable in so many ways.

Back in 13/14, the gulf between the bottom and top half teams wasn’t too big, whereas now the Top 4 are less likely to slip up against the lower teams. In 13/14, anyone could beat anyone on their day but now that just isn’t true. Also, if you take into account the increases in broadcast revenue and inflated transfer fees, our spending in 13/14 would probably be nearer £50m this year. No way would we have gotten Caulker, who was tipped as a future England centre back at the time, for £8m. He’d probably cost about £20m now. Medel was a bargain at £11m so he’d also be nearer £15-20m now. And the others would all have seen at least a 10-20% increase in price just for the fact that we are a prem club and are therefore benefitting from huge broadcast revenues. Also, would Bobby Reid/ Josh Murphy have cost £10/11m in 13/14? I doubt it, probably £7/8m tops.

And regarding Madine, he wasn’t Warnock’s first choice target, it was Grabban. So the £6m we spent on him was essentially us being ripped off by Bolton who knew the clock was ticking and he was our last target. I doubt Warnock saw him as Premier League material, he just needed an extra body upfront to take the burden off Zohore and also to provide some much needed competition, especially with Danny Ward still out.

But on Malky, i thought at the time that we would’ve stayed up if he hadn’t been sacked, just because he made us hard to beat. Although, he wouldve still needed some backing in January to make it slightly more comfortable.

Results from just last season have no bearing on this season. Teams change almost every year. How many players on the pitch for either side who played in the 5-0 defeat also played in our 3-2 win?

Probably. It'd be a very reasonable price. How much do you think a reliable international full back costs these days ?
I've no idea whatever why people here knock this player. It's one of the very few positions where we've got adequate premiership cover with two players who are both of the required standard.

I seriously wonder whether people understand what he's supposed to be doing in the game. Were they expecting him to score loads of goals or do jinxing runs through the midfield - overhead bicycle kicks - - - what ?

He's a full back who's known to run forward and even score the occasional goal ( which is a bonus). No doubt he'd be even more solid if he played regularly , but he's doing what it says on the tin and we can't complain about that. I love his commitment to the club too actually , and you can't buy that.

Re: Comparing us this time to last time in Premier league

Mon Nov 12, 2018 4:10 pm

Where in my post ,does it say anywhere that I’m knocking GC. For some reason, I thought that he cost about £1-1:5 million . I think he’s a good solid player who if we had a good attacking right back, I’d probably pick most weeks. I’ve always thought, that any team,at any level, should have one attacking and one defensive full back unless there are three centre backs and five in midfield.
