Hughton’s complaining misses the point

Mon Nov 12, 2018 10:21 am

Talking points from the weekend. Taken from The Guardian.

2) Hughton’s complaining misses the point
Cardiff have made a miserable start to the season, and are second favourites to go down. Yet, after Brighton lost against them, Chris Hughton decided that what he really needed to do was criticise the officials. The reality is, the laws of football are badly drafted and interpreting them requires officials to perform tasks beyond the capability of the human eye. Big mistakes are inevitable. So though Sol Bamba was, as Hughton says, offside before scoring the winning goal, that is not the point. What is the point is that Brighton took an early lead, missed fine chances to extend it and then, after Cardiff equalised, Dale Stephens got himself sent off. Which is to say that Brighton lost not because the officials made mistakes but because Brighton made mistakes. Hughton and his players would do well to acknowledge that. Daniel Harris

Standard for a manager though to blame someone else. Warnock is the best at point the finger at the ref after a loss.

We have had bad decisions against us Bamba's disallowed goal when the ref didn't play advantage spring's to mind. Brighton must have benefitted from a dodgy decision in the past. As they say it is swings and roundabouts.

Bamba's offside was very marginal and without the benefit of VAR- which I think will ruin the game as a spectacle-could not be expected to be picked up the officials.

What gets me with all this moaning about marginal offside decisions is that managers lose sight of why the rule was introduced in the first place which was to prevent blatant goal hanging. Can't they just accept that occasionally whilst a player may be a couple of inches the wrong side of the defender, the fault lies with his defence for not picking up the man rather than the linesman.
