Cardiff City Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge available for 2 PH Azkals fixtures

Tuesday 13th November 2018

Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has made himself available for the first two matches of the Philippines in the AFF (Asean Football Federation) Suzuki Cup beginning with the clash against Singapore on Tuesday at Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

Etheridge, who has 61 caps for the Philippines since starting his international career in 2008, told the Inquirer he will arrive on Monday as Cardiff still has a match against Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League this Saturday.

The Azkals will still have Etheridge in the squad when they fly to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday to take on Timor Leste on Nov. 17 at KL Stadium.

Timor is the only team in the tournament that won’t be playing home matches as its field failed to meet standards.

The Fifa international break will run until Nov. 20 only, which means Etheridge will have to return to Cardiff, paving the possibility of Filipino-Danish goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard taking his place in the starting lineup against Thailand on Nov. 21 in Bacolod.

But the Azkals will have left back Daisuke Sato and newcomer Patrick Strauss for the duration of the competition as they have been allowed by their clubs to be released to the Azkals.

“Some of the Europe-based players have been released by their clubs and we’ve been fortunate that, for example, (John-Patrick) Strauss will be released to the Philippines (for) the whole duration of the (AFF Suzuki Cup 2018) including (Daisuke Sato),” said Azkals manager Dan Palami.

Sato plays for Sepsi in the top division in Romania, while Strauss who made his debut against Oman last month, is currently with German second division side Erzgebirge Aue.

“It really helps when (we) have good relationship with clubs,” said Palami. “And with Sven (Eriksson) calling them up, requesting for (the) release (of players), I think we’ve had a little bit of success.”

The Azkals are already in Bacolod to begin preparations for their match against Singapore.

AFF Suzuki Cup 2018: Azkals’ Neil Etheridge might have to cover 18,378 miles for the tournament

Philippines goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who plays for Cardiff City in the Premier League, if selected in the national team for the first few matches of the tournament, will have a crazy week of travelling. Here we take a look at how much distance Etheridge will have to cover if he is to shuttle between club and country commitments for the AFF Suzuki Cup.

The AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 commenced earlier this week but the Azkals, who have been drawn in Group B are yet to play their first match. They open their account with a home match against Singapore on November 13 in Bacolod.

Though the 23-man squad is yet to be announced, the Cardiff City goalkeeper is believed to have joined, or on the way to join, the team at their camp in Bacolod. He flew from Cardiff just hours after their 2-1 win over Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.

The international break runs from November 12 to 20th and thus it is highly probable that Etheridge will play at the Suzuki Cup as Philippines’ first two games are scheduled for November 13 and 17.

Etheridge has already completed or is halfway through the 7215 miles journey from Cardiff to Bacolod via Manila to feature against Singapore on November 13. He will then fly with the team to Kuala Lumpur to play Timor-Leste on November 17, again via Manila (1974 miles).

The Azkals play Thailand in their third group stage match on November 21 in Bacolod. If Cardiff City do allow Etheridge to play that match as well, as the Premier League club next play only on November 24 against Everton, he will have to travel another 1974 miles.

The goalkeeper will then travel back to join his club mates in Cardiff, which would be another 7215 miles. All in all, the Filipino shot-stopper will have travelled a total of 18,378 miles by the time he reaches Cardiff.

Cardiff to Manila to Bacolod and back – 7215X2=14,430 miles (straight line distance, flight route and land route not considered)

Bacolod to Manila and Kuala Lumpur and back – 1974X2=3948 miles (straight line distance, flight route and land route not considered)

To be fair, Smithies has been brilliant for QPR the last couple of seasons and the step up from championship goalkeeping to bottom half of the Premier League isn’t actually that big, as shown by Etheridge’s pretty solid form so far.

The big worry is when it’s the Asian Cup in January. We could have Etheridge missing for a while.

Smithies hasn’t been brilliant on the odd occasion he’s been called upon, and what did Brian Murphy do wrong when he stepped in last season?

The Philippines’ first match is on 7th January 2019 and their last group stage match is on 16th January 2019. May be selfish of us, but we have to hope that they don’t progress any further.

I agree. Brian Murphy hasn't done anything wrong when he's stepped in and deserves a chance

I keep thinking the same but then ive also read he's unlikely to miss more than 2 league games.

Don't know , but you'd imagine that they're working hard with him to get him ready. He's actually a very good goalkeeper and too good to be a reserve. I take your point though, he's bound to be a bit rusty .
