U23 Preview: Cardiff City vs. Bristol City

This Friday 2pm :thumbright: :bluebird:

Cardiff City’s U23 side host Severnside rivals Bristol City for their 13th Professional Development League Two outing of the campaign on Friday, 23rd November 2018 – 2pm kick-off.

The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Bristol. However, these fixtures have now been reversed and Friday's match will take place at Cardiff International Sports Campus (Leckwith). Our second league clash against the Robins in 2019, will now revert to an away fixture. Supporters can attend this match free of charge.

Know Your Opponent

The Robins are currently managed by former Swindon Town manager, Luke Williams. The 38 year old was appointed Bristol City U23 Head Coach in June 2017.

In their last campaign, Williams' side finished at the foot of the table after only notching 23 points in 29 games. Despite scoring 39 goals, they attained the worst goal difference in the league (-39).

However, Bristol City have enjoyed a more positive start to the 2018/19 season. Sitting firmly in the middle of the table, the Robins have picked up four wins so far this campaign. In their last encounter, they were narrowly defeated 3-2 away to Colchester United at Florence Park, on Monday, 19th November 2018. Ricardo Rees and Harvey Smith both netted for the visitors.

Last Time Out

Our most recent meeting against the Robins occurred last campaign when the Bluebirds were narrowly defeated 1-0 at Failand, on Monday, 19th February 2018.

Former Bluebird Gary O’Neill captained the experienced hosts who were fortunate not be behind early on. Ogo Obi tapped home following a well worked move by Mark Harris, but the flag was raised for offside. Paul McKay also came close to breaking the deadlock just after the break. However his header glanced just narrowly wide of goal.

However with time running out, Bristol City took the lead; against the run of play. Midfielder Cameron Allen curled home from the edge of the area to deliver all three points to the home side.

Pre Match Quotes

Cardiff City U23 Head Coach, Jarred Harvey expressed his desire to maintain the squad’s current four match unbeaten when they face Bristol City.

“This match will be a good test for the players,” began Harvey. “Two games in a week is a quick turnaround so we look forward to the challenge after a quick recovery.

“It’s a local derby and we go their full of confidence after a 2-0 win. It’ll be nice to go into the game and keep performing like we have been. We want to keep the momentum going.”

Full-back Daniel Martin also briefly shared his thoughts ahead of the clash.

“We’re looking forward to the derby. Hopefully we can build on from our win last time out and keep the positive run going.”

First teamers in action

So it’s another Under-23s game for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing as he continues his recovery froma knee injru.

Loic Damour also started against Watford on Monday night and he features again. It’s good to see Jazz Richards in there too. Neil Warnock revealed the Welshman had done an intense week of training as he bounces back from another injury.

The gaffer will be hoping all three come through unscathed this afternoon.

Cardiff City U23s 1-1 Bristol City: Mendez-Laing scores again but late goal pegs back youngsters

The young Bluebirds took on their rivals from across the Severn Bridge

Cardiff City's Under-23s squandered a number of chances in their 1-1 draw with rivals Bristol City, but first teamer Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was again on the scoresheet.

Neil Warnock had revealed right back Jazz Richards had impressed during an intense week of training to aid his injury recovery, which culminated in a call-up to the Under-23s.

It meant with the Welshman, Mendez-Laing and Loic Damour, Jarred Harvey had three first-teamers in his side.

And Cardiff started strongly, with early chances through Mendez-Laing and Cameron Coxe though neither could get their finishes right.

Mendez-Laing, who had scored on his return from injury against Watford on Monday night, struck again. A low effort forced its way beyond Robins' keeper Jojo Wollacott to make it 1-0.

Coxe and James Waite both went close to doubling the lead almost immediately, but Cardiff led by just a single goal at the break, despite deserving much more.

Bristol City's only senior player, Bailey Wright, then missed a huge chance to level just after the interval, somehow nodding wide from a corner.

Cardiff failed to capitalise on their overwhelming dominance and were punished in the final 10 minutes as Tom Richard slotted home to level before Coxe's late red card compounded their frustrations.

Cardiff City: Hall; Richards (Pryce, 54), Brown, Bodenham, Martin; Humphries; Mendez-Laing (Veale, 63), Damour, Duffus (Evans, 45), Coxe; Waite.
