West Ham had more fans arrested than any other Premier League club in the 2017/18 season, according to data released by the Home Office.

46 of the total 374 top-flight fans arrested for football-related offences were supporters of the east London club, totalling just over 12 per cent of the Premier League arrests.

Arrest figures were down on the 2016/17 season

The statistics show that football-related arrests in English and Welsh football throughout the 2017/18 season were down 6 per cent on the previous campaign, falling by 96 arrests to 1,542.

This comes in at 3.5 football-related arrests per 100,000 attendees, with the most common offence resulting in an arrest public disorder (36 per cent), followed by violent disorder (20 per cent) and pitch incursion (12 per cent).

Fewer arrests were made in the Premier League than in the Championship – which recorded a stunning 591 – but the top-flight was ahead of both League One and League Two.

'Birmingham City topped the entire ranking of English and Welsh clubs with 95 arrests, followed by Sheffield United (62) and Sunderland (60).

The total number of West Ham fans arrested was not even close to matching these Championship clubs, but they top the Premier League rankings –

REVEALED Premier League: The football banning orders handed to fans of top-flight clubs in 2017/18 season
Official Home Office statistics have revealed which club had the most punished fans last term

By Billy Hawkins

19th November 2018,

The Home Office have released the official statistics pertaining to football-related arrests and banning orders.

The data, which concerns the 2017/18 league season, reveals 1,822 banning orders were in force, down 6 per cent from the previous campaign.

There has been a sharp decline in the total number of banning orders handed out over the past seven years

To further show the changing attitudes towards hooliganism, over the past seven years there has been a banning order decrease of 43 per cent, falling 1,352 from 3,174 in 2011.

However, it is not all good news, with the 492 banning orders handed out to Premier League clubs being shared amongst all 20 teams.

Newcastle United top the rankings, with 16 per cent (79) of the orders being handed to Magpies supporters, while Bournemouth come in last with just three banning orders handed out.

Other high ranking clubs include Manchester United and West Ham, whose London Stadium home was the scene of numerous pitch invasions and protests against David Gold and David Sullivan, the club’s owners, last season.

There were 38 banning orders handed out to Chelsea supporters, though this total may be skewed by the Stamford Bridge club’s plan to send racist fans to Auschwitz for education courses rather than ban them from games.

Football-related arrests lowest in a decade & Birmingham City top arrest list

BBC

November 2018

West Ham had the most arrests in the Premier League last season

Football-related arrests in England and Wales have more than halved in the past decade, according to new figures.

Arrests have steadily fallen this century and were down 6% in 2017-18 compared with the previous season.

For the third consecutive year, more Birmingham City fans were arrested last season (95) than any other club in England's top five leagues.

The Championship had the most arrests (591), up 22% from 2016-17, while Premier League clubs had 374 arrests.

West Ham had the most arrests in the top division with 46, 13 of which were for pitch incursions, up from two in 2016-17. The club has repeatedly struggled with security issues since moving into the London Stadium.

The arrest rate for the whole season was 3.5 per 100,000 fans, while League Two had the highest arrest rate of 8.6 per 100,000.

Government data from the Home Office also showed an increase in arrests for:

Throwing missiles - 125 (2017-18), compared with 91 (2016-17)
Racist and indecent chanting - 15 (2017-18), up from seven (2016-17)
Public disorder - 549 (2017-18), up from 505 (2016-17)

The three most common offences were public disorder (36%), violent disorder (20%) and pitch incursion (12%), while alcohol arrests dropped by 38%.

The number of banning orders in force - which stops a fan attending fixtures for a set period of time - dropped by 6% from 1,929 to 1,822.

There were 460 new orders issued last season, 11% down on the previous year.

Newcastle United had the highest number of banning orders for the fourth year in succession.

Decline in arrests generally, increase in Championship

Overall, there were 3,972 arrests in 2000-01, and 3,812 in 2007-08. That has now dropped to 1,542, its lowest level since the turn of the millennium.

"It's very pleasing to see football-related arrests falling again," said Football Supporters' Federation caseworker Amanda Jacks.

"Any match-going fan will know that the overwhelming majority of supporters are well behaved and that matchdays mostly pass without incident - these figures once again reflect that.

"Despite football supporters being subjected to the most draconian legislation of any other mainstream pastime in England and Wales, fan behaviour by-and-large is constantly getting better and we hope to see recent improvements in policing and planning continue become more widespread in the coming years."

The first time I saw organised fighting at a match must have been March 1968 vs Bristol City. You could have sat down in 1968 and written a list of the clubs that would feature most in the lists above and they'd be the same ones 50 years later!
