About Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, commonly known as Wolves, is a professional football club in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. Formed as St Luke's F.C. in 1877, they have played at Molineux Stadium since 1889 and currently compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, after winning the 2017–18 EFL Championship.

Wolves was one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888. The club spent 33 years in the top flight from 1932 to 1965, their longest continuous period at that level. In the 1950s, they were League champions three times (1953–54, 1957–58 and 1958–59), under the management of Stan Cullis. Wolves also finished League runners-up on five occasions, most recently in 1959–60.

Wolves have won the FA Cup four times, most recently in 1960, and finished runners-up on a further four occasions. The club has also won the Football League Cup twice, in 1974 and 1980.

In 1953, Wolves was one of the first British clubs to install floodlights, taking part in televised "floodlit friendlies" against leading overseas club sides between 1953 and 1956 before the creation of the European Cup in 1955.

Wolves reached the quarter-finals of the 1959–60 European Cup and the semi-finals of the 1960–61 European Cup Winners' Cup, and were runners-up to Tottenham Hotspur in the inaugural 1972 UEFA Cup Final.

Wolves' traditional strip consists of gold shirts and black shorts and the club badge one or more wolves. Wolves have long-standing rivalries with other West Midlands clubs, the main one being with West Bromwich Albion, against whom they contest the Black Country derby, although the two clubs have not met in a League fixture since 2011–12, the last season they competed in the same division.

Previous Meeting

We last played Wolves in April of this year, in a Championship fixture at Cardiff City Stadium. We lost 1-0 to a second half goal by Ruben Neves. This match became famous by Junior Hoilett and Gary Madine both missing injury-time penalties for us.

Nuno Espirito Santo says his side must take a “deep look inside themselves” after defeat to Huddersfield Town at Molineux on Sunday.

Monday 26th November 2018

Wolves failed to build on their positive performance of a fortnight ago and suffered a third successive home defeat after Aaron Mooy’s strikes in each half.

Preparations begin immediately for Friday’s trip to Cardiff City and Nuno will study what went wrong for his side, who produced little in the way of chances.

“I start my work now. We prepared for the game, we had clear goals for the game and didn’t achieve them,” he said. “We must solve it this week, so the team is prepared for the next game.

“We are very clear what we want. We work very hard on how we want to play. Huddersfield get credit of course, they deserved to win, but we must look why.

“We knew happiness doesn’t last forever but it’s how we show our character, bouncing back. We must take a deep look inside of us and really work this week.”

Nuno made a double change at the break and saw his side come within a centimetre of equalising through Raul Jimenez, but their efforts weren’t enough as Huddersfield added a second.

“We were trying to reach the draw, but we didn’t do enough. We were too far apart from each other and when Huddersfield had possession we didn’t drop to organise and recover the ball well.

“We were slightly better in the second half but not enough. The team never felt together both offensively and defensively. My job is to find out why.

“We rushed, we didn’t have possession of the ball, they pressed very well but we had better solutions to find, which is the work we have to do now.

“We had chances but not enough for a team like we want. It was a bad performance and Huddersfield were the better team. It was not a good day for us, we did not perform well.”

It’s a busy week ahead for Nuno who will stick to his philosophy and not be too downhearted after a disappointing performance.

“We don’t change, this is the way we’ve been working. It’s the way that’s brought us here and we want to push forward, but we have to be better as a team and group.

“We came from a good performance (at Arsenal) and had a bad performance. This week we have to look at what we want.

“It was probably one of the worst performances we’ve had. We need to take a good look inside, find out why and prepare better.”

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo admits his side 'played badly' in Huddersfield loss

Sky Sports

Nuno Espirito Santo was not impressed with Wolves’ performance in their 2-0 home defeat to Huddersfield

Nuno Espirito Santo says Wolves 'played badly' in their 2-0 defeat to Huddersfield, and must think about how they want to play in the future.

Wolves were mostly outplayed by their opponents on Renault Super Sunday, although Raul Jimenez did have a header cleared off the line in the pick of the hosts' chances.

"It was a bad performance," Nuno told Sky Sports. "We played badly today and Huddersfield were the better team. It was not a good day for us and we didn't perform well.

"There were too many mistakes and there are things we have to improve. This week we have to make a deep reflection on what we want and how we want to play.

Highlights from Huddersfield's 2-0 win at Wolves in the Premier League

"We were looking to try and reach the draw and go for the win. But we didn't do enough, it wasn't a good game. When Huddersfield had the possession, we didn't organise and recover the ball well so there are too many things, both offensively and defensively.

"My concern is about today. We prepared for the game, we had clear goals for the game and we didn't achieve so my concern is only about this game and to solve it this week, so the team is prepared for Cardiff.

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo says he will not change his formation

Nuno has selected a similar XI and formation for his opening 13 games in the Premier League, but insists he will stick to his guns despite Sunday's defeat.

He added: "No, we don't change. This is the way we have been working, it is the way that brought us here and it's the way we are going to push forward but we have to be better. On an individual level and as a group, we must prepare better. The game this week, maybe we didn't prepare well."

Nuno also seems willing to forget Warnock's foul language. At his pre-Cardiff press conference, Nuno said: "It's totally over. We had a chance to speak and clarify things, I can now say we're good friends.

"When you compete, both teams want the same, let's try and be better than them but always with respect.

"It was a fantastic game last season, very emotional. Both teams know each other well, we expect a very tough game."

'They’ve got different ambitions to us' Neil Warnock's view on Wolves, Nuno Espirito Santo and Fosun -

Birmingham Live

Thursday 29th November 2018

Neil Warnock says his feud with Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was settled with a 'squeeze' - and claims he's 'always liked Wolves'.

Warnock’s Cardiff City will meet Wolves on Friday night for the first time since that epic Championship clash in April.

After late penalty drama Nuno and his coaching staff stormed the Cardiff City Stadium pitch to celebrate joyously with the Wolves heroes.

That angered Warnock and when Nuno tried to shake his hand later on he repeatedly told the Portuguese to ‘F*** off’.

But they’re the best of friends now, according to Warnock.

"We met up at the LMA (League Managers' Association)," Warnock said. "He’s a big bloke and he gave me a squeeze. I think it was a nice one!

"I’ve already shaken hands with him. I spoke to him last year. It’s not all about money and he did a good job last year. I’ve always liked Wolves.”

Warnock labelled Nuno - whose Wolves team eventually romped to the Championship title - a ‘disgrace’ after the game in April, insisting he should have shaken hands before celebrating.

Asked whether he thinks Nuno has learnt his lesson, Warnock responded: "I haven’t a clue, I have enough things to worry about!

"It’s always easier to tell people where they’re going wrong, than doing things on the touchline.

"It’s a ruthless industry but we’re lucky to be in it."

Warnock has spent money at Cardiff in a bid to keep them in the Premier League. Gary Madine arrived for £6million in January and he splashed out a further £15million on Greg Cunningham and Josh Murphy in the summer.

He’s adamant the Bluebirds can’t compete financially with the might of Wolves owners Fosun, though.

"It’s a different type of pressure," Warnock said. "When you spend £100m, you have pressure. But you also have top players. I wouldn’t mind a bit of that pressure.

"But there’s only 20 teams so everyone’s under pressure. We’re a little bit different in that we’re always on the catch up, trying to improve it every six months.

"They’ve got different ambitions to us. They know how tough it will be."

Sky Sports:

Cardiff vs Wolves preview: Neil Warnock and Nuno meet again

29/11/18

Cardiff v Wolves is live on Sky Sports from 7.30pm on Friday

Cardiff and Wolves renew their rivalry when they meet in the Premier League on Friday Night Football, live on Sky Sports.

Both sides were promoted from the Championship last season, with Wolves winning the division and Cardiff finishing as runners-up.

Wolves helped secure top spot with a dramatic win at Cardiff in April, after which Neil Warnock called Nuno Espirito Santo a "disgrace" for his post-match celebrations.

However, the pair are now on better terms and Warnock, who celebrates his 70th birthday on Saturday, is relishing the chance to lock horns with Wolves again.

Nuno Espirito Santo says his dispute with Neil Warnock from last season is now 'totally over' ahead of Wolves' trip to Cardiff

"At this level every game is so difficult and we've had some good games with Wolves over the last couple of years," he said. "I'm looking forward to it - not so much to my birthday but for what promises to be a great game.

"They've done fantastically and they've got different ambitions than us, at the moment. Nuno has done a great job - he knows it will be a tough game, but we're aware of how good they've been. It will be good to pit our wits against them."

Cardiff vs Wolves

November 30, 2018, 7:30pm

Live on Sky Sports Premier League HD

Wolves made a strong start to the season but are winless in their last five Premier League games, failing to score on three occasions in that run.

They were beaten 2-0 by Huddersfield on Monday, and Nuno said: "We need individual consistency, we can't afford to have players up and down on their performance. It's a basic aspect for us.

Cardiff's Harry Arter reveals he is enjoying his loan spell at the club from Bournemouth and would consider a permanent deal

"We were all disappointed. Individually, each one of us has to look inside and see what aspects didn't work and bounce back. We totally believe in what we do, the way we do things."

This is the first top-flight meeting between Cardiff City and Wolves since February 1962, a 3-2 win for Wolves at Ninian Park.

None of the last eight league meetings between Cardiff and Wolves in Cardiff have ended as draws - both sides have won four games apiece in that time.

Cardiff and Wolves met on Friday at the Cardiff City Stadium in the Championship last season - a 1-0 win for Wolves in April, with the Bluebirds missing two 90th minute penalties.

Wolves have won all four of their league matches played on Friday under manager Nuno Espirito Santo - all four were in the Championship last season.

After two consecutive 0-0 draws in August, Cardiff have neither drawn or kept a clean sheet in any of their last 10 Premier League games (W2 D0 L8).

The away team has not won any of the last 20 Premier League meetings between two promoted sides (D7 L13), since Leicester won 1-0 at Burnley in April 2015.

Cardiff have scored the first goal on a league-low one occasion in the Premier League this season, in a game they went on to lose anyway (1-4 vs Chelsea in September).

Only thing that surprised me after that game was why didn't Pilkington take either of them? :banghead:

We need to at least every game think of these things whoever is in the squad there should be at least a number one and number two on every game for penalties.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock has hinted he will make changes with three games in eight days looming.

Josh Murphy will likely be recalled, while Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Jazz Richards and Gary Madine are being assessed after recent injuries.

Wolves are again without Spaniard Jonny Otto because of a knee injury.

Wolves travel to the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday 29th November with a sold out away allocation set to cheer on Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

About 3,000 supporters are making the journey to the Welsh capital for the 8pm kick-off and will hope the match can be as entertaining as last season’s Championship thriller.

Wolves have sold their near 3,000 location out.

For supporters who can’t make the trip to South Wales, the clash will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event from 7pm.

Matchday information

Visiting supporters will be pleased to know that there are still parking spaces available at the Bessemer Road car park (CF11 8BA), which is just a short walk from the stadium and can be pre-booked directly with the Cardiff City ticket office.

While Wolves fans looking for a pre-match beer are advised to do so in Cardiff City centre where all pubs are neutral venues. The city centre is around a 30-minute walk from the stadium.

Alternatively, supporters will be able to purchase refreshments at kiosks with the stadium concourse.

Detailed away supporter information for the visit to Cardiff City can be found here.

Any supporters who are travelling to Cardiff and have any questions ahead of the match are advised to email awayfan@cardiffcityfc.co.uk.

Saying now that Zohore still out, Hmmmmm?

Kenneth Zohore remains out with a calf problem that's kept him out of the last three games, while winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing faces a late fitness test.

The former Rochdale star has been working on his way back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and has made two recent appearances for the under-23s in a bid to return to full fitness.

However, while Warnock remains positive on the 26-year-old's progress, this clash is likely to come too soon.

Jazz Richards is also likely to miss out with a hamstring injury, while Lee Peltier remains a long-term absentee after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the defeat to Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has no fresh injury concerns ahead of this game, although Spanish wing-back Jonny Castro Otto looks set to be sidelined until the new year after suffering a knee injury on international duty.
