Surprising transfer news emerges from West Brom as Moore targets 34-y/o ahead of January transfer window

Sunday 9th December 2018

West Brom are keeping tabs on veteran full-back Greg Halford, who is currently without a club after being released from Cardiff in the summer, according to reports from the Express and Star.

The 34-year-old was given 45 minutes of action for the West Brom under 23’s team recently in a win over Reading’s academy side.

Halford made 16 appearances for Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City side which won promotion to the Premier League last season, and he could be set to return to the Championship with Darren Moore’s team.

He has also represented Reading, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth and Wolves and is a vastly experienced versatile option to have for any team.

The Baggies offered Halford the chance to keep up his match fitness with the club, but they haven’t ruled out offering the veteran defender a contract with the club.

West Brom boss, Darren Moore is in need of some defensive options as they battle for an immediate return to the top-flight, following relegation last season.

The Baggies boss has dipped into the free agent market already this season, with the likes of Wes Hoolahan and Bakary Sako already arriving at the club after their contracts expired.

Halford could be the next man through the door at the Hawthorns and fans will be hoping he can have a positive impact on Darren Moore’s side as they challenge for promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Verdict:

This would certainly be a surprising move for both parties.

Halford is surely not going to get in ahead of the current options that Darren Moore has available to him, and the 34-year-old defender is surely going to want to be playing regular first-team football at this stage in his career.

The Baggies should be steering clear of this one as it would be a complete waste on their wage bill, with better options available for Darren Moore’s side.

He's without a club so he could join them tomorrow surely, no need to wait for the transfer window.

Hope he goes there, would be good for him.

Can’t fault him while he was at City. Worked hard in training, was reliable when called upon and had a great attitude for a player who hardly played.

Never let us down in a promotion campaign, great professional in my opinion.

I'm surprised no one has picked him up already. A cracking pro. Never lets anyone down and always puts in a shift.
