Chris Sutton admits Cardiff City are proving him wrong and picks out the two men behind the turnaround

The pundit has been a pantomime villain this season for Bluebirds fans who have delighted in their recent Premier League form

Chris Sutton heaped praise onto Cardiff City and Neil Warnock in a stunning reversal of his views from earlier in the season — but maintained his prediction that the Bluebirds would go down.

The outspoken BBC pundit has been a controversial figure among Cardiff fans this term after claiming Warnock's men would be relegated with a record low Premeir League points tally.

And after a 1-0 win over Southampton ensured Cardiff surpassed Derby's record of 11 points — after just 14 games — Sutton was taken to task by a passionate Bluebirds fan on his 606 show.

Acting as the main pundit alongside presenter Alistair Bruce-Ball, Sutton started the show by continuing his wind-up merchant act

"I don't want to hear from Cardiff fans," he joked.

"You're still down Cardiff — and two others. I don't want to take calls from Cardiff fans."

He then referenced his 'record low' comments when asked about the Bluebirds' latest victory.

"That was banter," he said. "I'm glad I'm inspiring them, that's good for Cardiff.

"If Neil Warnock keeps them up, he's manager of the year, but they've got a lot to do, come on!"

Later in the show Bluebirds fan Ian called in to slate Sutton's "hypocritical" stance on the Bluebirds, which provoked a more measured and surprisingly positive verdict from the former Chelsea and Celtic striker.

"What a hypocritical bigot you are, I've got to be honest," Ian said.

"You were just asking people to give Liverpool the recognition they deserve for playing so well in the Premier League and challenging Man City.

"I would just like you, for once, to give Cardiff City some credit."

Sutton responded in typically combative fashion.

He said: "I'm giving Cardiff plenty of credit Ian, because you're surprising me. I said Warnock should be manager of the season if he keeps Cardiff up. So is that not credit, Ian?"

Sutton's subsequent comments may surprise Bluebirds fans hugely as he lavished praise on manager Warnock and top scorer Callum Paterson.

"They've certainly got something going there, there is real spirit," he said.

"Don't misrepresent what I say. I fancied Cardiff for relegation on the basis of what they spent and what resources Neil Warnock had to work with and Neil Warnock's past record as a Premier League manager.

"They are such a surprise and at the moment I'm being made to eat my own words. My point is there's still a lot of work to do for Cardiff City.

"January is going to be interesting in terms of a striker and Neil Warnock has talked this week about bringing someone in.

"But this is the resources Cardiff have to work with: Callum Paterson who is a full-back by trade, played as a right-back for Hearts, is an absolute nuisance up front.

"This is where the manager I think has to take great credit in terms of organisation, players knowing their roles and responsibilities and the sheer guts, grit and determination.

"This is a typical Warnock team and at the start of the season I didn't think they had the skill, Cardiff, but they're proving me wrong. Well done."

I honestly don't know why people ring in and make themselves look stupid.

At the end of the day if we go down, Sutton can sit on top of the mountain and laugh. Most people can see its just banter, come on we all know were up against it. Id rather keep my mouth shut, if we do stay up then yes he can have it. but come on ringing in and chopsing off to him - we have got character and guts and have ground some results out but we got a long way to go before we start lording it up IMO
