Why so many FA Cup kick-off times have been moved

The Football Supporters’ Federation have lodged a complaint to the Football Association over the changing of several FA Cup third round kick-off times.

Just days after the third-round draw took place, the dates and kick-off times were announced for all 32 round three ties that are set to take place in the New Year.

But of the 32 fixtures set to take place, only 10 will take place at the traditional kick-off time of 3pm on Saturday, January 5, with the rest now due to take place over the remainder of that same weekend.

And the FSF believe that playing so many matches away from the 3pm Saturday slot could have a negative impact on matchday attendances in the prestigious competition.

“Match-going supporters are already of the view that there is too much live football on TV,” Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the FSF, told the Telegraph.

“Having the third-round games spread out so thinly across the weekend diminishes the identity of the competition – ignoring what domestic supporters of the competition want.

“We’re particularly concerned that the number of broadcast games could have a negative effect on match-day attendances in the competition and we will be taking the issue directly to the FA.”

Cardiff City face Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium at 3pm on the first Saturday of 2019, with Swansea City taking on Aston Villa at the same time.

However, the winner of tonight's second-round replay between Newport County and Wrexham at Rodney Parade will host Premier League outfit Leicester City at 4:30pm on Sunday, January 6.

That game has also been selected for live TV coverage, with both clubs set to receive a broadcast fee of £150,000 while the winner of the tie will scoop an additional £135,000 in prize money from the FA.

It is one of six matches that will be shown live in the UK by the BBC or BT Sport.

But the kick-off times from a further 14 third-round fixtures have been altered for overseas broadcast due to a new deal that has come into place.

Fans watching overseas will be able to view live broadcasts of the game that get under way at 12:30pm and 5:30pm on the Saturday along with the games starting at 2pm on the Sunday.

And all of the clubs who have had their kick-off times changed for overseas broadcast will scoop a fee of £50,000, according to our colleagues at Hull Live.
