What the Cardiff City boss said as his side slumped to a 3-0 defeat at St James' Park.

Sunday 20th Jan 2019

Neil Warnock was in reflective mood after seeing Cardiff City's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United consign them back into the relegation zone.

The Bluebirds boss was asked about transfer news, why Harry Arter missed the game, Bobby Decordova-Reid's game time and the Emiliano Sala deal.

Did you give yourselves too much to do, Neil?

Warnock: "Yeah, I didn't think it was a 3-0 game if I'm honest.

"I felt quite comfortable in fact, then all of a sudden we concede a sloppy goal. It's poor defending and the lad took advantage.

"I thought that was their best spell, first half, and then we came out very positive second half. We've just got to be more clinical, we had so many opportunities to put a final ball in, a final pass or get a shot away.

"And although they were brilliant blocks from the Newcastle lads, we shouldn't have allowed them to become brilliant blocks. We should have got the shot away earlier.

"That's the final third really, they were better in the final third."

Bobby Reid make a good impact, is he pushing to start more often?

Warnock: "I think it suited him today, the system.

"But I've had no complaints with Bobby and the opportunities he's had.

"I always pick what I think is my best side if I'm honest and I don't think that will change."

What was the thinking behind Niasse starting? Had he trained?

Warnock: "He had trained. I wanted to start him rather than have him on the bench, it was so cold today.

"I thought there might be more problems if he came off the bench, maybe pulling a muscle or what have you. I asked him to give me an hour and he did that."

You had no right-back or centre-back cover, how's the transfer search for those positions?

Warnock: "We are looking. I thought I'd got a full-back last week but unfortunately that didn't materialise.

"We've got 10 days now. We can intensify that, as I do think we need another defender. Hopefully a lad who can play a couple of positions, someone quite versatile."

How difficult will it be to find a player like that?

Warnock: "Not easy.

"You'd be surprised though, from all the agents' emails and text messages from the chairman to me this week, you'd think there were 150 lads who were good enough - all right-backs playing all over the world and the best thing since sliced bread, the Premier League is.”

How damaging a result is that in the relegation battle?

Warnock: "It's a disappointment for us. We wanted to put pressure on and I felt in the first half it was there to be had.

"I thought Newcastle were nervous and I thought we grew into the game.

"But to concede such a silly goal like that was a massive blow.

"But we've been there before. We were in the bottom three earlier in the season and you can never write our lads off.

"Nine of them that started today were in the Championship last year and I thought Rondon was the best player on the pitch today - and you get what you pay for, really."

Was Harry Arter injured today?

Warnock: "Yeah, he tweaked his groin and we're not sure what it is.

"It was one of them, although you want to play him, with 10 days until the next game you want to make sure you don't aggravate anything.

"We had a chat before the game as he was going to be a substitute. But why risk him coming on? He wasn't sure whether it was an old injury he's had in the past, or a new one.

"We thought 'let's wait and do some tests on Monday'. Hopefully he'll be ok for the Arsenal game."

Is this relegation fight going till the end of the season?

Warnock: "I think there's six or seven teams involved and it'll go up and down.

"Teams will have winning streaks and then hit a brick wall - that's the level of the competitino.

"We'll always be favourites (to go down) and nobody will expect us to bounce again, but we've shown over all the season that we've bounced back from adversity.

"It's not been an easy season for me. We've only been in front for 94 minutes all season, you shouldn't be allowed that - that's a health risk!"

Is the Sala deal done?

Warnock: "Yeah, it's not far off. They finished his medical today so we're just waiting for the final confirmation when we get down to Cardiff, it will actually official on Monday morning.”

Did a Chinese club really come in for Sala at the last minute?

Warnock: "I think so yeah.

"But there's no comparison between Cardiff and Chinese clubs, is there? He's not silly, he's a clever lad and I think Cardiff is more appetising.

"I had a chat with him at the training ground and I think he's looking forward to it, to be honest.

"My French is getting better as well, with Sol behind me!"

Nicholas,
Yes these players now have to stand up and be counted, they have to treat every game as a cup final , if we want to stay up :thumbright: :bluebird:

He’s losing the plot rapidly. If we stay up we need a dramatic overhaul of tactics, he’s got 10 days to get it sorted. We will probably lose at the Emirates but a display of courage and a narrow defeat would help slow down our miserable decline.

Iv,e said this months ago and got shot down like the red baron,if sir neil wants a right back with pace there is no need to spend money.
Kadeem Harris complains about lack of game time, we are expected to get a right turning over against the gunners so nothing to lose by spending all week with him converting to right back and see how he does, hehas more than enough pace as well as being stocky and strong.

I feel sorry for Warnock some people allready calling for him to be sacked ,
It was allways going to be an uphill struggle with a championship squad
Playing in the premiership , let's hope these new players can help us get out
Of the relegation zone . :ayatollah:

Hes right wasn't a 3-0 game but facts are ncastle were not that good it was just our defending was so poor again! Correct that and we will do a lot better but as he's not done so all season not confident will sort out in time to keep us up. :old:
