Police search for Emiliano Sala to target 'coastal areas, rocks and islands'

The search resumed at 7:30am on Wednesday morning

Wednesday 23rd January 2019

The search to find Emiliano Sala and the pilot that went missing during a flight between Nantes and Cardiff has resumed on Wednesday morning.

Sala - who became Cardiff City's club record signing on Saturday - was on board the missing plane which left Nantes and was due to land at Cardiff Airport on Monday evening.

But the light aircraft disappeared from radar while near the Channel Islands at around 8pm on Monday.

Emergency services launched a search which lasted more than 15 hours before being called off at 5pm on Tuesday.

And police have confirmed that the search has resumed on Wednesday morning.

They revealed that two planes will search a "targeted area" believed to have the "highest likelihood of finding anything".

A statement from Guernsey Police read: "23rd January, 7.30am update. We have resumed searching.

"Two planes are taking off & will search a targeted area we believe has the highest likelihood of finding anything, based on review of the tides and weather since it went missing.

"Coastal areas around Alderney and off-lying rocks and islands will also be searched from the air.

A fresh update from Guernsey Police on the four possibilities on the search for Emiliano Sala:

A statement read: "We are searching based on four possibilities:
"1. They have landed elsewhere but not made contact.
"2. They landed on water, have been picked up by a passing ship but not made contact
"3. They landed on water and made it into the life raft we know was on board
"4. The aircraft broke up on contact with the water, leaving them in the sea.
"Our search area is prioritised on the life raft option. More updates as information becomes available."

As I see it,
possibility 1: Unlikely, as unless they are on an uninhabited island, with no means of communication, (cell phones need masts) then today's technology means that they would have made contact by now somehow
possibility 2: Unlikely, as ships have radios and they would have alerted the authorities
possibility 3: Its possible, and they are adrift and at the mercy of currents etc (there were reports of red flares on Monday night I read). Again, mobile phones no good on a raft, so cant make contact.
possibility 4: Tragically the most likely, but if the aircraft broke up on impact, leaving them in the sea, surely there would have been debris spotted by now, these planes do not have all their components heavier than water, granted the engine would plunge down the depths but other parts of the aircraft should be floating. However, an impact with water at speed causing a break up would leave little hope for surviving such impact.

Its all awful.

Police call off search for the day

23/01/19

Guernsey Police have called off the search for Emiliano Sala, pilot David Ibbotson and the missing plane for the day.

They say no trace of the aircraft has yet been found after two days of looking in the English Channel.

Guernsey Police tweeted: “After an intensive search using multiple aircraft and one lifeboat over the last nine hours, we have found no trace of the missing plane.

“With the light now fading, the search will shortly be suspended for the night.

“A decision about whether to recommence will be taken early tomorrow morning. There will be no further updates tonight.”
