How Cardiff City's relegation run-in compares to Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Burnley

Wednesday 13th February 2019

Rafa Benitez, Neil Warnock, Ralph Hasenhüttl and Sean Dyche, managers of Newcastle United, Cardiff City, Southampton and Burnley respectively

Cardiff City's hopes of Premier League survival were handed a massive boost with that dramatic last-gasp win at Southampton last weekend, but boss Neil Warnock will be well aware that there's still some way to go before they can even begin to think about congratulating themselves on a job well done.

The victory at St Mary's was the first time the Bluebirds had recorded back-to-back wins in the top flight since 1962, and was enough to haul City out of the league's bottom three.

Then again, there's still only one point separating Warnock's side from the dropzone ahead of the visit of Watford in just over a week's time.

Things are getting very tight at the bottom, with just three points separating Crystal Palace in 13th and Southampton in 18th.

With that in mind, here's how everyone's run-in compares.

20th - Huddersfield: 11 points

Fixtures: Newcastle United (A), Wolves (H), Brighton (A), Bournemouth (H), West Ham (A), Crystal Palace (A), Leicester (H), Spurs (A), Watford (H), Liverpool (A), Manchester United (H), Southampton (A)

Verdict : With the Terriers currently 14 points adrift of safety, you have to say it would be the most remarkable escape in Premier League history if they were to somehow get out of it.

There is perhaps a faint glimmer of hope in the fact that their next seven games are all against sides outside the top six, a run that includes trips to relegation rivals Newcastle, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Lose those three games, and they will almost certainly be gone by the time their final home game with Manchester United rolls around.

19th - Fulham: 17 points

Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri

Fixtures: West Ham (A), Southampton (A), Chelsea (H), Leicester City (A), Liverpool (H), Manchester City (H), Watford (A), Everton (H), Bournemouth (A), Cardiff City (H), Wolves (A), Newcastle United (H)

Verdict: You strongly suspect that Fulham are destined for the Championship too, but aside from a horrible end to March when they take on title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, it's a run-in that Claudio Ranieri must surely be looking at and thinking his side can pick up points.

The next two games at West Ham and Southampton could be crucial, while a derby with self-destructive Chelsea perhaps doesn't seem nearly as scary as it would have done in the past.

Nevertheless, making up the eight-point gap between themselves and safety would leave absolutely no room for slip-ups, and would also probably require a catastrophic collapse from one of their rivals.

18th - Southampton: 24 points

Fixtures: Fulham (H), Manchester United (A), Spurs (H), Watford (A), Brighton (A), Liverpool (H), Wolves (H), Newcastle (A), Bournemouth (H), West Ham (A), Huddersfield (H)

Verdict : Man United, Spurs, Liverpool and Wolves - it looks a tough schedule for the Saints, who also look set for a couple of relegation six-pointers with Fulham, Brighton and Newcastle.

Those relegation scraps are probably the most likely source of points, but it's hard to see where Ralph Hasenhuttl's side can realistically string a good run of results together.

It looks a tough run.

17th - Cardiff City: 25 points

Cardiff City have given themselves a fighting chance (Image: Gareth Everett/Huw Evans Agency)

Fixtures: Watford (H), Everton (H), Wolves (A), West Ham (H), Brighton (A), Chelsea (H), Manchester City (A), Burnley (A), Liverpool (H), Fulham (A), Crystal Palace (H), Manchester United (A)

Verdict: The next five games are going to be crucial for Cardiff. Of course, every game is tough in the Premier League, but home games with Watford, Everton and West Ham have to be viewed as an ideal chance to pick up points. Wolves is probably the toughest assignment of that run, but City will surely fancy themselves against an out-of-form Brighton side.

Cardiff will need as many points as possible before the end of March, because the fixture list isn't kind to them heading into the final stretch of the season.

The Bluebirds host Chelsea on March 31, before taking on Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as relegation rivals Burnley, Fulham and Crystal Palace - games that could well define their season. Many City fans will be desperate for the job to be done before their side head to Old Trafford on the final day. Relegation at the hands of former boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer would be a hard pill to swallow...

16th - Newcastle United: 25 points

Fixtures: Huddersfield (H), Burnley (H), West Ham (A), Everton (H), Bournemouth (A), Arsenal (A), Crystal Palace (H), Leicester (A), Southampton (H), Brighton (A), Liverpool (H), Fulham (A)

Verdict : Newcastle's last-gasp draw at Wolves was certainly a setback to their survival hopes, but they can take comfort in the fact they arguably have one of the kindest run-ins of all the teams at the bottom.

Arsenal and Liverpool are the only outfits inside the top six for the Magpies from now until the end of the season, while they also take on relegation rivals Huddersfield, Burnley and Crystal Palace at home.

Lose those games and they'll be bang in trouble, but there are otherwise some very good opportunities to pick up points.

15th - Burnley: 27 points

Fixtures: Spurs (H), Newcastle (A), Crystal Palace (H), Liverpool (A), Leicester (H), Wolves (H), Bournemouth (A), Cardiff (H), Chelsea (A), Manchester City (H), Everton (A), Arsenal (H)

Verdict: Certainly one of the tougher run-ins of all the teams down there. Burnley will be eyeing up the home games with Palace, Leicester and Cardiff as a potential source of points, and may well fancy themselves at Newcastle and Bournemouth too.

It's been a disappointing campaign for boss Sean Dyche, who last season managed to mastermind a route to European football for the Clarets.

It's not worked out for them this time around, and their horrible run of games at the end of the season will surely play on the mind, with Chelsea, Manchester City and, on the final day, Arsenal to come. Points will be needed quickly ahead of that run.

14th - Brighton: 27 points

Fixtures: Chelsea (A), Leicester (A), Huddersfield (H), Crystal Palace (A), Cardiff (H), Southampton (H), Tottenham (A), Bournemouth (H), Wolves (A), Newcastle (H), Arsenal (A), Manchester City (H)

Verdict : Having enjoyed the relative comforts of mid-table for most of the season, a disastrous run of just one win in their last 11 Premier League games has seen the Seagulls tumble down the table and placed firmly in the middle of the relegation dogfight.

Perhaps worryingly, they still have four of the Premier League's top six still to play, including an immensely tough final two games against Arsenal and Manchester City respectively.

The three home games with Huddersfield, Southampton, Cardiff and Newcastle will immediately stand out for boss Christ Hughton, and may well end up deciding their fate come the end of the season.

13th - Crystal Palace: 27 points

Fixtures: Leicester (A), Manchester United (H), Burnley (A), Brighton (H) Huddersfield (H), Newcastle (A), Manchester City (H), Arsenal (A), Everton (H), Cardiff (A), Bournemouth (H)

Verdict: The trips to Leicester, Burnley, Newcastle and Cardiff will have to be seen as good opportunities for Roy Hodgson's side, as too will the home games with Brighton and Huddersfield.

There is a tricky spell for the Eagles in April, where they take on Man City, Arsenal and Everton, but Palace do have one of the less intimidating finishes to the season of all the teams down there, although obviously they will hoping that the job is done by then.

One of the kinder runs, but games against sides around you are never easy when you're fighting the drop.

Our next 5 games will decide our fate. If we get 3 wins (34 points) we're almost over the line and Fulham/Southampton will have to have an amazing run in to top us.

I would say our next six by including Chelsea no great shakes at the moment and we shouldn’t be to worried about them in our own back yard. Bournemouth weren’t and look what we did to them.

Next six are key 12 points from wherever and we will be okay

A fancy Brighton to go down with Fulham and Huddersfield, they are on a poor run, tough fixtures and we play them.

Thanks for this

Looking at those run ins I’d say Burnley and Brighton have the worst but all sides have relegation games amongst themselves and they will be the crucial games if we can beat Brighton and another one down with us gives us a much netyer chance of staying up for sure

I am sure rafa, sean and woy have all just had a sigh of relief.

could be any of the 6. Burnley have picked up points against bottom 6 clubs but are running out of easier games. Newcastle seem to be playing well and not getting points..

34 points I think will be ok this year. I agree Burnley could be in the mix with us and Southampton for the last spot. Huddersfield an Fulham look doomed. I have Southampton on 32 us and Burnley on 34. :bluescarf:

Burnley and Southampton have the worst run ins IMO. Like I said from the start of the season we will be fine as their are a lot of shit teams in this league. If had to pick one to go down I’d say Southampton are most likely though I have a funny feeling Brighton will not be safe going into the last day.

wouldn't 8 or 9 relegations on the bounce suit you down to the ground. could be derbies against Met and trips to Havie west.

I would expect to get points in each of those 5 games if we want to survive, even if we have to park the bus at Wolves. Between 5 - 9 points is a minimum target

And that’s with you being very negative too. I think we will pick up more points than that personally.
