The offensive gesture which could land Gareth Bale in big trouble after Real Madrid derby goal

Friday 15th February 2019

Gareth Bale could face a ban of up to 12 matches for making an offensive gesture to Atletico Madrid fans after scoring for Real Madrid last weekend.

The Wales superstar has been reported by La Liga to the Spanish Competition Committee for the gesture which has been described as "inciting opposition fans".

Bale celebrated scoring the third goal in a 3-1 win for Real against their Madrid rivals at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

The derby is always one of the more fiery fixtures in Spanish football, with Bale — who had been goaded by Atletico supporters from the terraces — sealing the victory late on.

His arm gesture, known as the "sleeve-cutter" was captured by TV cameras.

He could be suspended for up to 12 games, if sanctioned.

"In the celebration of Bale's goal, he waves his right arm to the proximity of his head, in a predictable sign of encouraging provocation to the public, subsequently making a gesture of possible obscene and contemptuous meaning, raising the bent arm and hitting the middle of it with the other hand," read a La Liga statement, via La Sexta .

"The possible sanctions for these provocations vary.

"If it occurs, the offender will be sanctioned with suspension of four to twelve games, if the animosity of the public, the suspension will be from one to three parties or for a period of up to one month."

Spanish football expert and Guardian journalist Sid Lowe explained the origins behind the gesture and how offensive it is in Spain.

He said: "This comes at a time when the question marks around him are possibly bigger than ever.

"He's got in trouble for making a very Spanish gesture.

"And at first I thought 'there's no way he's done that'.

"It's known as a sleeve-cutter, when you bring one arm across the other forearm and do an 'up yours' effectively."

Beginning of the end of his RM career then, possibly the last time he’ll wear the white if he does get a 12 match ban and will go through the summer

Good news for Wales hopefully. Should guarantee his fitness for 3 crucial qualifiers coming up in the next few months.

The treatment he's received from Real Madrid fans has been shocking really. Similar to Ronaldo in being one of their best players and he gets treated like s**t and gets booed and whistled at, and gets appalling treatment from the press there considering he's scored 100 goals for them, won them a Spanish cup and won them 2 Champions Leagues. Hope he leaves that spoil, self entitled club and goes somewhere where he's appreciated.
