A man who sneaked a six-inch blade into an Aston Villa match has been banned.

Caleb Williamson will be banned from all football games in the UK for three years after he was caught carrying a large kitchen knife in his sock.

The 21-year-old claimed the weapon he took into the Villa v Ipswich game on Saturday, January 26 was his 'work tool' he forgot to drop home.

After he was arrested, he admitted to BirminghamLive he had been taking cocaine in the toilet cubical when he was searched by officers .

He said he intended to take the knife home, but didn't have time before he went to a pub and then the match.

Williamson added: "I was in a situation where I was at my friends house at about midnight on Friday going into Saturday.

"I put it in my sock but I didn't go home, so didn't have time to put it back.

"We went to the pub on Saturday before the game and it wasn't playing on my mind. I was walking towards the stadium then I thought: 'I have the knife in my sock.'

"I was tempted to throw it in the bin. I didn't think I'd get caught."

He also apologised to his fellow Aston Villa and its fans saying: "To all the Aston Villa fans of all ages and generations, to the football club, I want to apologise to this incident.

"Not only have I embarrassed the club and fans, I've embarrassed my family.

"I hope you all could forgive me, this is a mistake I'll have to deal with.

"I hope you understand it wasn't a weapon that would have ever been used.

"I can't take it back if I could I would.

"I just want people to know it's not me, it was a terrible mistake. I accept all the consequences."

Williamson pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article in a public place, possession of cocaine and possession of cannabis at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Tuesday (Feb 26).

He was given a three-year football banning order and ordered to pay £305 in costs.

But he avoided jail, instead being handed a six month sentence suspended for a year for possession of a bladed article and possession of cocaine.

He was also ordered to take part in a drug rehab programme and carry out 100 hours unpaid work.
