Forgotten Cardiff City full-back Jazz Richards opens up on injury woes and insists he still has a role in survival fight
By Tom Coleman

Richards is out of contract this coming June.

Saturday 16th March 2019

The 27-year old hasn't played a single minute of first team football since October

Cardiff City full-back Jazz Richards insists he still believes he has a role to play in his side's battle for Premier League survival.

The Wales international has struggled for fitness this season, and hasn't feature since City's 4-2 win over Fulham back in October.

Ankle surgery and a series of hamstring niggles have been the main factors behind his lack of game-time, but despite playing just 97 minutes of top-flight football this term, Richards believes he could still have a part to play in Cardiff's crucial run-in.

He told Dai Sport : “I still have a niggling hamstring injury which is proving hard to shake off.

“I was fit for the first half of the season – the first 18 games – but since then I’ve had minor injuries that keep re-occurring. But I’m working hard to get back involved and get back on the pitch.

“I am going to try and get back for the last few matches, but it’s hard to say exactly when. I’m working hard in the gym and out on the training ground. It’s about managing it and making sure it’s right because I’ve come back too soon from it before and it’s not worked.

“This time, I’ve been taking my time and making sure it’s right so that I can be available to help the squad for the last few games.”

Richards is likely to face a battle to win back a place in boss Neil Warnock's first-team plans, with Joe Bennett, Lee Peltier, Bruno Manga, and January recruit Leandro Bacuna seemingly ahead in the full-back pecking order.

It promises to be a tough battle for the 27-year old, whose fitness woes have also cost him a place in the international set-up with Wales.

But with his contract set to run out at the end of the season, Richards is facing a potentially uncertain future.

However, for now he remains focused on helping the Bluebirds retain their Premier League status.

“We have a very honest group of lads – a great bunch – but it’s hard to put your finger on where we have struggled. But the one thing we do have is the ability to bounce back and surprise a few people. I can’t see why we can’t do that again.

“It was always going to be hard coming up into the Premier League and trying to compete with the top teams.

“We come up against teams who are usually better footballing teams than us. But I don’t think there are many teams who have the heart we have. If we keep believing then I think we have every chance.

“Togetherness is the thing that will get us out of this position. It’s important we stick together and continue to work hard

“There are games left which we can go and win.”

A lot of words in that statement. What I read was: I wasn't picked for the first half of the season, not happy so didn't bother but now my contract is almost up I might make a bit of an effort to get myself a deal somewhere else.

Tbf to the lad every time he's played for us I think he's done well, he's solid when defending and also good going forward. Just a shame he's had such bad injury problems. He will probably move to a midtable or lower half championship team next summer.
