What is our biggest rivalry?

Swansea or Bristol?

Since I’ve been watching us, I always thought it was Bristol.

But in recent years, the Swansea rivalry has got bigger.

Bristol always as been.... note the difference in crowd for bristol v city and bristol v swans! Half empty for their game Sunday compared to us previous week. Think Swansea is a new fan thing ...ours is called sevenside derby for a reason.

That doesn’t make sense. Unless I misunderstanding, if so apologies. Why does Swansea v Bristol have any impact on who our biggest rivals are out of the 2?

Had it though? We’ve always been competing with Bristol, don’t think the same can be said for Swansea.

Like I say, I always saw Bristol as the rivals until recent years.

Ned to me the rivalry bit comes from their stay in premier league...a lot was made of fact they were there for years and city fans had more interaction on forums and social media with them than previously did... sb cannot be a supporter from the 70s 80s or 90s when it was always city bristol swans was glint in fans eyes upuntil premier league.
Ps can add Bristol rovers to rivalry

Allan, I’m only 31 but always seen Bristol as our biggest rivals.

Remember when Swansea came up and wasn’t that bothered.

That said…. Was in the stadiums when Bellamy and Tanner scored so celebrated them a lot

This depends on your age.
I was watching City in the 60s playing Bristol City in local derby games.
Swansea Town were nowhere to be seen always played in lower leagues.
The rivalry with the Jacks is mostly since they got to the premier league.
Hopefully we do the double double this weekend, will miss game as traveling to Southampton for a cruise to celebrate my 70th Birthday. :old: :bluebird:

Bristol don’t really care about the jacks, but they hate us.

More difficult is who we have our biggest rivalry with. I still say it’s Bristol because of the history.

Bristol don’t really care about the jacks, but they hate us.

More difficult is who we have our biggest rivalry with. I still say it’s Bristol because of the history.

It was always Bristol when I was younger. It was quicker and easier to get to Bristol via the M4, as the M4 to Swansea (town) is reletivley new, and the old A48 took ages . This may seem irrelevent now, but back then it meant a lot to travelling fans.
Back then it was City V City (Welsh V English) Even the railway main line ran between Bristol and Cardiff. Swansea was always a backwater of a place. Even today, the M4 ends there, as do the main line railway. As far as rivelry is concerned Bristol always turned up in more numbers too.
One fact is for sure, if anything happened to either, we would still have a local rival.
I do like the fact that we dislike both clubs, Bristol dislike us a lot as they also have other local rivals (Gas, Swindon and even Reading) but Swansea absolutley detest us. They want, and need us to be their main rivals. (who else could there be?) On the other hand, we have a choice. :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6:

Swansea are our biggest rivals today. If we beat them our season is made regardless if we are top or bottom. If we beat the Wurzels its just an added bonus.

Swansea for me,

Re: “ Biggest rivalry - Swansea or Bristol? “

Wed Mar 13, 2024 8:49 am

I’d say there’s more hatred for us from the Jacks than the Wurzels.

Poll doesn't mention The Gas, now that was a proper derby..

Re: “ Biggest rivalry - Swansea or Bristol? “

Wed Mar 13, 2024 9:17 am

Now it’s becoming Swansea as they are obsessed with us.

But growing up it was both Bristol clubs before the Jacks as so much happened between them and us and Swansea were virtually a NO show at their place and only came in escorts to us.

Swansea for me these days, and it has been since we've been in the same leagues as them for a while.

Bristol City and the Gas always used to be huge, can even throw Newport into the mix there but now that we don't really play the gas pr County, it's the Jack's and the wurzels

Re: “ Biggest rivalry - Swansea or Bristol? “

Wed Mar 13, 2024 9:24 am

For me it's leeds bristol then swansea, I like it when we beat them all but the first 2 give me the biggest satisfaction. The jacks we are there biggest game of the season they can't get us out of there head

Has to be the Jacks for me, then the Wurzels then dirty Leeds

But in recent years, the Swansea rivalry has got bigger.

Bristol City (not so much Rovers) without hesitation...

The 'Jacks' only ever became a serious 'rival' in the 1980's and specifically after that infamous game where they thought it was okay to throw chairs and attack OAP's, women and children in the Ninian Park Grandstand...

Their 'fans' were (still are) an embarrassment to football and live off the false narrative of the so-called 'swimaway'...

Still, I guess our support can now do the 'runaway' on Saturday after their well publicised embarrassment last weekend...!   :ayatollah:

Leeds had a decent 'firm' in their day but only became bitter rivals after Sam Hammam Day in the FA Cup...

I think the celebration after Chopra's winner against the jacks, when there were still loads of fans in the stadium 30 mins after the final whistle, show that in the last 20 years they're by far our biggest rivals

Very interesting that it’s a close poll, I still say Bristol but agree that recently the rivalry with the jacks has got stronger.

Could also be influenced by where you live. Supports living in Bridgend and further west come in to more contact with jacks making the rivalry bigger
