LAST NIGHTS CANTON STAND MEETING

Wed Feb 02, 2011 4:01 pm

Carl and myself attended on behalf of this forum and the travel club. I'm sure Carl will go into things in more detail later.

We both came away feeling quite excited, the Ground safety officer from I take it the Football League or SAG whatever it is turned out to be a refreshing surprise, the dozen or so I met from my Rams days were real jobs worth pen pushers, and whilst there are laws and guidelines we have to work under they can be interpreted and relaxed slightly and common sense can prevail.

This chap was more than happy to encourage and support the club in building the Canton kop, clubs that already work on these lines have seen an improvement in atmosphere and also the enjoyment of fans being grouped in like minded groups.

The mass scaremongering and complaints we were reading about on message boards as not materialised into firm actual complaints to the club, and the vision of 400 people on mass moving into an area already sold out and taking over existing season holders seats did bring a few smiles.

I think now as I did then it is simply a few negative internet stirrers who would find an objection to being offered a bundle of free twenty pound notes with no catches,Most people there could see no negatives and anyone with concerns or grievances can take them up directly through the correct channels.

It is going to be about choice, if you want to spend more time standing than sitting, then you go to the Canton, if you want to sit for the vast majority of the time you can relocate to the wing sections of the Canton or simply change stands, but why did you buy your original seat in an area that from the start was sold as a more relaxed section that would tolerate standing.

If and it's looking less likely by the minute (no its not, think positive fat boy) when we get promoted away fans will have to have 118.

Hopefully if sufficient fans leave 116 and 117 and come across to the Canton, then those in 118 who wish to stay there abouts can then take up the vacated seats in those sections.

Mind you I am sure the current situation in 116 and 117 regarding standing will be taken more severely and persistent standing will see people lose their season tickets and possibly be banned, so what atmosphere that is there now will be gradually changing. I'm sure there'll always be a good craic and noise in there, but it wont be done from a standing position for most of the time so be warned.
Some people reading this now will be saying (and don't shoot the messenger) f**k them I'll do what I want and they wont stop me, it is so easy to stop you simply by blocking your admission card. You may get told once or twice by a steward, if that don't do the job you'll be picked up by camera or seat number and your card blocked, so be warned.

Any way back to the good news as I see it. Loads of good ideas about ramping up the atmosphere in the Canton and the club are open to suggestions, they will have meetings and think tanks and listen to all suggestions, mind you my first one of allowing us to have life size figures of Alan tate that we could burn wasn't accepted as one of the better ones

Huge flags. light shows, even our own Mascot come mad man running up and down in front of the stand winding everyone up, or even a couple of drums at the back above the seats just getting things going etc. they will listen to anything that helps the enjoyment factor.

The concourse facilities can be more geared up to the selected audience an possibly things like live bands can be set up before the game in the concourse.

I can really see this area taking off, we have got some of the most passionate nutty fans in the country, the reason it so good on away game is partly due to us all being bunched up tightly together with mates we have known for years and having a laugh, its a bit easier to let your hair down amongst like minded souls and this could be a turning point in giving us a fortress mentality we so badly need.

Happy days mate just the type of good news we need. As for thinking positive THE BLUES ARE GOING UP need some massive performances next cpl of games, jacks inparticular. I think if we can get 3 points from that match it will really kick start our season and give the squad the confidence it needs. Blooobirds!!! :ayatollah:

Did you advice the SAG guy that, to prevent riots, DJ should desist from picking Naylor?

You may have missed an opportunity there.

Thanks. All good positive news Gwyn, lets hope the Canton Kop happens and really takes off. What's the message to "singing" fans currently in the Ninian? Did you hear enough positives to say "yes, lets go for it" or are there still things to iron out?

Keith, just for me to get this clear, you are asking me to clarify about some false rumours regarding the Trust, what am I supposed to clarify if they were not rumours started by me, surely if the rumours started by anyone, then you need to ask that person how they came about, it's not for me to clarify, all I can do is comment on how things went last night.

I think things started off when an e mail was sent out saying that some Trust members had objections or concerns, but other than that your asking the wrong person.

Sorry Gwyn , I just thought it might have been made clear at last night`s meeting that it had been called at the club`s request and not as a result of a "complaint" by the Trust as had been suggested on here (in a post since deleted). If that wasn`t made clear last night then of course you can`t be expected to clarify.

I did actually query on here at the time why the unfounded rumour had been started but , again , the relevant post seems to have been deleted.

Any chance of a scale model then maybe 1/20th size.

Maybe it could be set on fire at halftime then passed around to see if anybody could be bothered to piss on it.

That all seems pretty positive Gwyn.

What happens next ? Are the club going to publicise the proposals ? As time is ticking on and season tickets are on sale already

In all fairness to them, they want to do what's best and i'm sure they can get some publicity about this scheme, but at the moment they are happy enough for us fans to spread the word and try and get things moving as a fan led scheme.

So let's get it out there and in twenty years time when the world use the Canton Kop as an examplee of what's good about the game and stadium atmosphere in general, all us aold farts can have a warm inner glow and know that we played our part.

Great news Gwyn, the only issue I have is the 'Canton Kop' being brandished around. I appreciate the idea is in its early stages and we MAY just be using that name for now, but we are not Liverpool, we are Cardiff....we are South Wales.

Cardiffian's Canton or something that unites the city and the valley together with a stirring name.

Cheers Dears. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Well i think the 'Kop' came out f the hill the Zulus massed on in Rourke's Drift'., so as we are the 'Men of harlech' what about Rourke's Drift ? Or something else based on the film ?

Do you know, my head is like a box of frogs some times, don't know what's going on in there myself at times
I got this image of some mad looking fucker like one of those blokes off Takeishis castle in the house full of doors, running pitch side in front of the Canton winding everyone up doing something like a Maori warrior and the haka

Or a couple of fans with different outfits, one dressed as a miner with a pick and shovel who walks across the front and when the fans see him the old I'll be there song starts up, or someone dressed a s a Zulu running past and we all start singing the men of Harlech song, anything to have a laff and raise the roof, or even a little donkey pulling a small caravan and the You Jaclk b*stard chant could kick off.

I still think the burning effergee of Alan tate isd worth a try. 8-)

Kop comes from Spion Kop a mountain in South Africa, but I think it was a different battle to the one at Rourke's Drift. I actually like Canton Cage as suggested by Clive, but taking your suggestion we could go for Canton Drift

Well done to all those involved in this project and as long as you are happy with what the club have suggested then go for it. May be there could be a dry run at one of the home games before the end of this season, where everyone switches over to the Canton although that might be hard to arrange.

All sounds very promising!

Not a fan of the Kop tag though! Wer Cardiff not Liverpool! If someone someone says Kop you autmaticaly think Liverpool so lets create something unique so we and other fans can relate to!

Also a big no no to any instruments!!!
