I would like to know if the Coalition Government still believe that prison doesn't work (especially for the young), because if they don't then why have 2 17 year-old's been sent to prision for their first offence?

Re: " YOUR HONEST OPINIONS REGARDING THE LAW "

The problem is poor police work as a general reason for the recent inconsistency regarding sentencing etc.

Football fans are an easy target, nearly always on CCTV & hostilities are often aimed towards police. This sets up for easy case work and essentially a piss easy trial. Things go to court very easily as the evidence allows for an easy charge.

Rapists, Paedo's, Abusers etc, often does not have hard evidence that is easily collated and put forward, cases have a lot of technical issues and are just basically hard work.

Nowadays there are sod all coppers who can actually right a decent report and do the leg work etc to get something to court.

That's why when the little things do get there they get the full brunt of the law.

Re: " YOUR HONEST OPINIONS REGARDING THE LAW "

Thu Feb 03, 2011 8:57 pm

If they are guilty then they deserve a banning order. Nothing more than that.

I know that there are tougher sentences with football violence but it does make you wonder what the law is doing. If you got caught having a fight in town on a saturday night on CCTV you would not get a custodial sentence unless you have really gone OTT or have a long criminal record for simialr offences. How many times have people been given community service for affray?

It is wrong, especially when we all know what town will be like tomorrow. High jinks? More like double standards.

People can do disgusting things to animals, really vile things, and not even get close to jail time. Not to mention all the stuff the rest of you have mentioned. Horrible

While I disagree with you about the "Student riot" (it wasn't really a riot, and a lot of the trouble was started by the coppers), I do agree that it is crazy how football fans are targeted. You can do something on a friday night and get a slap on the wrist, but do the same thing on a saturday afternoon and you'll get put in prison. Its just so wrong its unbelievable. Especially when Football is supposed to be our national sport (I refuse to accept rugby is).

Football lads are an easy target. Britain is a mess.

Britain cannot afford to be tough on crime, cos it means jailing
tens of thousands more criminals. The jails are full and they got
no money to build more. Society wants blood, society is disgusted
by the paedos and rapists walking the streets.

So the establishment gives them 'football hooligans' the scourge of
society... but more importantly.. people with no pressure groups or
bleeding hearts to fight their corner.

Tough on crime, this government? Of course they are... look what
they are doing to those evil football hooligans!!

pile of f*cking wank

The charges for certain crimes are ridiculous

but that isn't any excuse for anyone else who breaks the law, committing a different crime, they should still get charged

Re: " YOUR HONEST OPINIONS REGARDING THE LAW "

Thu Feb 03, 2011 9:29 pm

You can moan all you want but the tariffs for this crime are known and you take the risk if you get involved.

Yes, the sentences are harsh but are available for a judge if he believes they match the severity of the criminal act. You throw in undeniable evidence due to witnesses, police cameras and CCTV then you see what the judge is faced with.

Don't get me wrong I agree it is wrong but it's not as If the sentences were made up just for these boys, they are known. Other crimes where the evidence is not so clear cut end up with sentencing at the lower end of the allowable scale and it is THIS that makes the afray sentences look harsh.

Throwing bollards shows an undue care for others and could easily have killed someone.

Sentences are still wrong but they committed a criminal act and the potential for the highest sentencing tariff is possible. In these cases they were handed out.

Can the sentences be appealed if considered excessive?

i think the police know that the law is a joke,, but they pick up there wages at the end of the month,, this aint having a go at the police, but they risk there lives in somecases, do all the paper work, and the courts let the system down, overall the police are there to serve us, and they do a very good job, couple of wankers, but got them in every job, a sense of humour would help, but you cant have one if your a copper,,,,,, finally, they hate football fans, its a case of us against you, when it comes to football, these guys are pure tossers,

There is nothing Great about Britain.

The law is a mess; how does the punishment fit the crime ffs.

Its a disgrace.

Whilst I dont agree with the amount of time given and I sympathise (to a point) with those sent down... the persons in question should not have got themselves into the situation.

If they werent there - they wouldnt be going to jail.

Unfortunately figures have to be met for areas and football fans are very easy targets when they put themselves in this position.

The CPS would have a field day with the video evidence that they had on show that day and the judge would be exactly the same !..

They like the burnley/blackburn fans have been made an example of !

that reading player that actully punched chops - 3 game ban, dosnt lose his freedom, gets full wages - but he's actully punched somone. could have done him in the kidneys bad, v dangeros. but justa 3 game ban, no jail. and he got 3 yellows and a red last season, 8 yellows and a red the season before - dont tell me they were all for descent, i bet hes kicked a few people before too.

but he dosn't get put in jail, but 20 thousand people saw it, and a load of coppers and i bet a load of judges and all as well.

then a bloke with no previous chucks a bollard at no one - and gets 16months? you want my "honest opinions reagrding the law", well, i dont like to swear in public so i cant say it, but it's all f***ing wrong, isnt it? all well wrong, im afraid. there is no justice in this world - not very often with the corts, anyway. all wrong.

Justice in this country is a joke & feel gutted for those behind bars tonight, how can a scuffle with like minded people carry a jail sentence? It should'nt even have gone to court, they've been punished enough with a certain ban from football matches, to spend time behind bars is unbelievable. My car got pinched outside my front door, i had a phone call at 3am saying they've caught the culprits, when i got to the car it was wrecked, they'd smashed the window, busted the steering lock & discarded my 2 boys football kits from the car. When i asked the old bill could i have a word with the pond life i was told i'm not to go near them, i never knew who they were & had to pay out for the damages. Scum like these roam our streets & get away with it & the victims pick up the bills. Long lost faith in the law.

Ive just logged on and am absolutely gobsmacked by the severity of these sentences. Dont get me wrong if you commit a crime then you deserve a punishment. However, as many others have said, the punishment really should fit the crime - and 16 months is, in my opinion, ridiculous.

I remember a few years ago being at an away match and remember seeing this police dog barking and jumping at this young boy. The kid must only have been about 8 and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now some would argue that a police dog is an offensive weapon. Now unless someone wants to correct me I dont think that police officer was charged with attacking an 8 year old boy with an offensive weapon.

To all those concerned I really feel for you all. There is justice and there is injustice and there is a fine balance that needs to be met. That balance, in my opinion, was crossed.

Annis, you're comparing apples and oranges.

The question should be, I think, what would be a worthwhile deterrent? Banging them up for longer and longer clearly isn't working (not yet anyway).

Ian Tomlinson died at the G20 riots, he was just a newspaper seller walking home before being pushed to the floor by a copper. Moments later he died but the Courts ruled that the fact that he was pushed to the floor in the preceding moments before his death by a Policeman had nothing to do with it. Laughable.

Then there is this women who is hit with an asp by a copper at a demo about Mr Tomlinson's death. The copper is cleared of assault in court. When she is clearly, no real threat to him or his colleagues. See it for yourself here:

As Charles Dickens said in 1838 if the law supposes that.... then the law is an ass!

Why dont all our supporters bring our AMs / MPs into this.
Why is there a 2 tier system, get drunk wearing Welsh rugby colours and have a fight and you get away with it.
No bannings just a ticking off, from the Judge.
Why dont rugby supporters get banning orders!!!!!!!!!!!
Football fans are being treated differently.
