i,m shure when i went to the neu camp in barca the coach driver said part of the ground was lower than the surrounding area...not sure if he ment the pitch or not tho..

Correct, when they expanded the stadium they had to dig down and lower the pitch level to create more space for seating. They may have done the same thing in Madrid.
